I don't know what all the reviews are about. I found OrthoVirginia to be very professional, prompt and excellent to work with. I saw Dr. David Lee for my elbow and he was terrific. They x-rayed my elbow on the spot and gave me a shot of cortisone as well. I got a referral for platelet therapy in 4-6 if needed. I am very impressed. read more

The doctor was great as was the X ray technician. BUT THEN....first PT appointment would have been a month out. So I found a well rated PT place near me and they needed to see the X rays in order not to give me movements that would make my situation worse. Good luck with that. my experience with Orthovirginia has been pretty awful. I should have read the reviews. The nurse practitioner that I saw was nice enough but scheduling PT has been a nightmare and the staff who answered the phone were of no help whatsoever. I ended up scheduling the PT at Inova hospital because Orthovirginia was not helping. my prescription ran out and I've called four times to get it refilled and I keep getting the run around. I've spoken with three different people and I've left several messages yet NO ONE has responded. when I ask the person on the phone they said that they would not be able to help me beyond just sending a message. no one responds to the message so effectively they are not able to help me refill my critical prescription. Orthovirginia simply doesn't care about their patients. It's not just about the doctors, the whole experience matters. read more

I should've read the reviews. Don't go to this practice - horrible wait time, indifferent and cold doctor. I waited for 1.5 and Dr Jamie hardly spent 10 min with me. Someone correctly said- she has no bedside manners She seemed to be in a rush and did not probe deeper to really understand my situation. When I asked a question unrelated to hip but my fingers she told me to see a specialist and didn't bother to at any questions. A lot of technical jargon but no actual concern from this doctor. Wanted to give a chance to a young professional but turned out to be a sour experience. read more

Don't come here. I saw Dr. Anthony Avery and he gave me a cortisone shot without ultrasound at all. Most people do a shot with ultrasound for accuracy reasons. He was in and out of the office in less than 10 minutes. Seemed like he just gives everyone a shot. Didn't explain the importance of movement, exercises or anything. I wonder if he gets paid more if he gives more shots. read more

Waited over an hour for an MRI, then waited for another hour to get the CD burned (which I asked if I needed to wait for and was told yes while my Dr was an Ortho VA doctor and absolutely did not use the CD). However my biggest issue is with their billing department. I was given an estimate of around $250 and they billed me 1k. I was just told that there is nothing they can do because an estimate is just that, an estimate. I never had such a huge discrepancy with estimates before. It feels absolutely insane to me that they think this is okay. You get an estimate so you can prepare yourself and know more or less how much you will pay. But trying to bill me 4 times the cost they estimated is just ridiculous. DO NOT COME HERE!! Virginia Hospital is a way better facility, much nicer, sees you on time, and charges you the amount they estimated they would. DO NOT COME HERE!!! Please don't bother yourself giving me your standard response to contact you. I spoke to 3 different people at your billing department and got the exact same answer "there is nothing we can do". read more

She kept me waiting an hour past my scheduled appointment, then acted as if I was wasting her time as I described the hip issues I've been having. I'll never visit this practice again. read more

I had an appt today with Stephen Hughes, ortho doctor, for my lower back pain. I was kept waiting 1.5 hours and was never seen. Because I had another appt. to go to afterwards, I came out of my exam room twice to get an update on the wait. Hughes finally came and lectured me twice about "not talking in the hall." Since I was closed up in an exam room with no one checking in periodically to update me about the delay, the only way to be heard was to come into the hall to inquire. I cancelled the appt since I had no more time. Why is it that the doctor's time is considered valuable but not the patient's? I had a previous experience with another OV doc where he yelled at me for calling him after my surgery (even though I was told to call). I don't think I'm going back to OrthoVa. read more

I saw Dr. Hughes and PA, Jennifer Leeman, at the McLean office with extreme sciatic pain that had been plaguing me for 8 months. After 5 months of physical therapy, dry needling and steroid injections, my pain only became worse. Finally after getting MRIs of my hip and lumbar spine, I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Hughes of OrthoVA. He had come highly recommended to me by my husband and several friends. My husband had seen Dr. Hughes years earlier for sciatica and was told he wasn't a candidate for surgery and it would work itself out. And it did! Dr. Hughes was wonderful. He was compassionate and caring and I immediately trusted him and his judgment. The PA, Jennifer Leeman, added another level of care that cannot go unmentioned or be understated. She is a delight and they make a wonderful team. When Dr. Hughes pointed out the herniated disc on the MRI, it was clear what needed to be done. Within days, I was having a lumbar discectomy (outpatient) at Fairfax Hospital. It was a success! The first week was spent trying to ease the pain and Jennifer Leeman could not have been more responsive to my patient portal messages. She reassured me that all my concerns were to be expected and worked with me on my prescription and OTC medications. A week later, I was doing much better but still having a lot of discomfort. I was also feeling a little down because of the pain. I went to OrthoVA for my first week follow up today and both Dr. Hughes and Jennifer saw me and said it was time to get moving. I couldn't believe I was asked to bend over and touch my toes so soon. But I did! I was told to resume my normal activities within reason. Jennifer worked with me on new pain meds. I came home with a whole new attitude. I took a short walk outside, emptied the dishwasher, folded clothes, etc. because after just one week, moving is the best way to heal. I'm on pain meds but only as a temporary crutch to get up and back to my life. I start PT soon. I highly recommend Dr. Hughes and Jennifer Leeman. I give them both an A+. As a side note, my surgery team at Fairfax Hospital was amazing! read more

This location is a meat factory, churn and burn... Make the patient wait for an hour in a crowded waiting room. See them for less than 15 minutes, collect the co-pay. Schedule outside tests, and make then repeat in one month after they get the results. Forget the forethought to pre-schedule a follow-up at the time of the appt. so that the patient in pain would have a follow-up close to the time they get their results instead of 1 month later. Seem to have better luck with the knee and ankle docs in Fair Oaks.. Not the docs who only practice in Mclean. read more

If you are handicapped do go here or have trouble walking. The are on the fifth floor and the elevator has been out of service for a while. I got here 10 minutes before my appointment and "arrived" ten minutes late because of all the walking I had to do. The person at the desk asked if could still be scene. Can you believe that. I will never come again. They are now 15 minutes late from when I got here. Also they tell me to look on the website. It tells me to call a number and guess what happens, they know nothing. Avoid this location, Dr Jamie Grossman in particuler. Visit was twice what Inova charges ($400 v $210) for out of pocket patient. Waited 2 hours to be seen. Dr was rushed, and despite making the appointment due to pain and discomfort she stated she was not a pain management specialist and could only suggest Meloxicam and PT. She actually seemed angry that I would even suggest an injection for relief. They also dragged 3 teenage girls into the room, apparently for training. without asking so who knows. Ten stars! I reviewed Ortho VA a few years ago when my daughter broke her wrist, and gave them a nice 5 star review. Now I'm the patient and wish I could give them many more! I tore my ACL skiing out West and came to them for diagnosis and care when I returned from the trip. Literally EVERY interaction with every person I've come into contact with at Ortho Virginia has been exceptional. Everyone from the receptionists, to the physical therapists, to the doctors, and to the multiple other Ortho Virginia folks on their team has made one of the worst injuries of my life one of the best customer service and patient experiences I've ever had. Professional, caring, efficient, and trustworthy are just a few of the descriptors that come to mind. Doctors Frank Pettrone and Anthony Avery have been wonderful, and made sure to give me plenty of information about my injury and the various options they recommended for helping me to get back to being very active. My physical therapists, Amy Dreissen and Misha Gilani have also been fantastic, encouraging, and helpful as I navigate recovery from ACL replacement surgery. Nobody wants an orthopedic injury, but the Ortho Virginia team has definitely made a difficult and painful situation so much easier to deal with! read more

For the most part I've been favorably impressed with Virginia Ortho's admin staff. However, when the surgical coordinator didn't contact me until shortly before surgery I was was confuse about what I needed to do after my surgery. I waited over a month before I heard from the coordinator, who contacted me a few days before surgery. Given that there are two types of rehab along with purchasing a water cooler wrap (for the knee) and a walker and cane, it would have been a better experience had the coordinator contacted me much sooner. Anyway, all went well but for the late coordination. read more

Let me start by saying our interaction with our doctor has been AMAZING and we would highly recommend him but unfortunately the entire rest of the staff is just mean. No other way to say it. From checking in, checking out, to the surgical scheduler they have all just been nasty and I don't understand why. Obviously you're there because of chronic or acute pain so you'd hope they could find it within themselves to be a little kinder to people. We will continue to go back to see the doctor because he's fantastic, hopefully others have a better experience then ours has been. read more

I don't usually take the time to review businesses but my experience was so wonderful. All of the staff were warm, professional and efficient. These reviews are terrible and I almost cancelled my appointment because of them. I waited only 5 minutes and saw Dr. Lane. He was knowledgeable and took his time with me. Due to managed care, many providers are in a hurry. They ask you if you have any questions with their hand on the doorknob (that has actually happened to me). This was not that! Wait time can be horrible. I have had to wait over 1.5 hours to see my doctor, so then I scheduled an appointment for the same doctor's first apparent spot of the day, thinking she couldn't possibly be late to that, right? I still had to wait 35 minutes. I sat and stared at the posted notice of fees this practice charges for patients missing appointments...made me wonder why it doesn't you both ways. I am a patient waiting knee repair by Dr. Lane. At this point I am fed up about the whole experience especially the coordinator Catherine Barrera or Burreara. I do not remember the last name at McClean OrthoVirginia from day one when Dr. Lane suggested my outpatient Quad repair this is the diagnosis given by Dr. Lane not myself. I got my pre-op package and got everything and my Physician's Office forwarded the needed stuff after making sure blood work, and ECG was done by her she said she did not receive it. I asked my physicians' staff and they assured me they did. Catherine said my physician taking my ECG is not enough a cardiologist should okay. My physician, had a Cardiologist on her staff look and Okay it. Catherine and Lane, want a cardiology clearance. While for my knee replacement they had accepted my Physicians echo-cardiogram two years back. My one scheduled surgery was cancelled for July 10 just because my physician gave ECG and got her staff cardiologist to go through the graph. I will be waiting till kingdom come I guess. Went in for an injection ( I hate needles) and I didn't know what to expect but Dr CHERRICK and her team were so amazing. They made sure that I was comfortable and explained each step during the process, but not in a way to freak me out. I didn't feel the needle (huge plus) only the meds going in. This was one of the WORST PT/OT experiences I have ever had. I have had many injuries over the past 5 years due to me doing BJJ (Brazilian jujitsu) so I have been to PT many times. This time I decided to go to this office in McLean for my wrist injury. I saw the OT for my wrist and right off the back she was very stiff, unfriendly, and didn't seem like she wanted to be there. I tried to start multiple convos with her but was met with one word answers. I really love physical therapists who are friendly and give off a good vibe, but this occupational therapist was very much the opposite of that. Maybe she just didn't like me, but I am a very quiet person so I don't think I bothered her intentionally in anyway. Either way, I wish she had been more friendly to me. It made me not want to go back, but she was the closest OT near me, so I decided to go back again . The second time I saw her, I told her the stretches for my wrist were hurting me and she just looked at me, very still, and said with a nasty attitude "Yeah. That happens." Umm excuse me?? If something hurts someone, the OT should not get an attitude and get mean. They should be understanding and nice about. It was almost like she took it personally that the stretches didn't work for me. Very weird. I felt so nervous during the session because of her attitude and really didn't want to come back. At the end of the session I asked her to tape up my wrist so I could drive home and she just straight up said no. She said I needed to "stop using braces and tape." Which I can understand BUT weening someone off these things takes time, and if I felt I needed them, I would think the PT/OT should give it especially since this was only the second visit, she hadn't seen me progress enough to determine if I was strong enough yet to get off a support. On my third and last visit, she was working on my wrist and moving it around, and then she handed me a handheld massager and told me to massage my wrist and arm myself. WHAT????? I'm literally paying $35 for these sessions... and for what? For me to massage my own wrist? Like what the hell. I was outraged, I have never experienced service like this at a PT/OT clinic. Anyway, then we did like 3 exercises, she didn't tell me how many to do of each, she just randomly would tell me to stop and move on to the next exercise. She wasn't even paying attention to how I was doing them either; just was like putting stuff away and cleaning up while not looking at my form. I wish I had had her undivided atWhen I finished three exercises, she said "well I can't help you anymore, you know the exercises we did. You should go see your doctor again. Bye" .............. First off she never gave me a print off of the exercises, only the stretches. Second, what does she mean she can't help me? I only saw her 3 times.....????? What?? It was the WEIRDEST and most stressful PT/OT experiences I have ever gone through. PT/OT should be done in a nice and friendly environment. This was definitely the opposite. I have waited a few months to talk about this experience because I wasn't sure if I should share it, BUT I decided to finally post it and I am putting this to warn people to be careful if you go to this office for OT. Similar to Sana, the front desk staff fall short. This last visit I was seen an hour after I signed in (on time) because the front desk person told me "oh, i wasn't looking at the sign-in sheet". I shared my experience with Dr. Scott (who is spectacular btw) who was very concerned and empathetic. They are a techno-savvy practice and I suggested that their IT people install a sign-in kiosk that alerts the front desk person with a huge announcement which they cannot ignore. Dr. Scott said we would share my experience with the powers-that-be and I believe him. He has worked on one trigger figure and the outcome was as good if not better than the Anderson Clinic where I had another figure done. He will be working on figure number 3 shortly and will keep you posted. Dr Childs worked on my mothers back quite successfully. read more

Wish I saw the yelp reviews before making an appointment. I had an appointment at 6:40 am- yes I u sweat and that there could be circumstances out of control but to make a new patient wait almost 40 minutes to be seen is HORRIBLE! I arrived at 6:30 and and then doors were locked. There was an employee waiting to get in. A young lady with pinkish hair arrived and said, you can come in and have a seat... she was followed by another employee who upon getting behind the reception desk, it was more important to check her phone than to greet or address me. I an older man walked in and she greeted, registered him and I finally walked up and asked to be registered. She appeared disgruntled by my request. She also stated, your appointment is at 7- they told you to come in at 6:45 to fill out paperwork- but no one was in the office until 6:55 am! I waited until 7:20 am- no Apologies, no excuse not patient centered care to make me feel like I could trust them as a provider. Oh and let's not mention how they are one off HIPPA violations- asking personal questions at the front desk with other patients in the room Do yourself a favor? DO NOT- I repeat Do Not- schedule with this office! They have a a lot to to learn about customer service! Staff need better training! I wouldn't of come if I didn't have to! Ruined my right leg. I had lived successfully without a right ACL for 14 years, and then had an incident due to instability. The doctor's advice was (of course) - ACL reconstruction! Foolishly, I took the doctor's advice and had the surgery. During recovery, the PT performed an exercise that strained my remaining hamstring muscles. For some reason, my own tissue graft did not take (or something else happened that no one can explain). So now I'm lacking one of the muscles in my right hamstrings, AND don't have an ACL...As a result my knee swells often, and a year later I haven't even come close to returning to full function. I have intermittent pain in the leg, and obvious signs of bruising from even moderate activity. Extremely disappointed and border on depressed. read more

I am surprised by the number of positive reviews for both this practice and for Dr. Kevin Lutta. After a four-month saga my husband endured, we both recommend people steer FAR clear of this practice and Dr. Lutta. My husband, a healthy male in his 30s, went in to have heel pain assessed in summer of 2021 and was diagnosed with a cyst in his heel bone. Dr. Lutta was recommended to him and he was scheduled for a surgery to have the cyst removed and bone graft inserted in August. This fairly simple procedure was offered as a conventional solution to his pain with about a six-week healing timeframe. From the get-go, it was a nightmare. His nerve pain that was an issue prior to his surgery (and that he explained to Dr. Lutta during his consultation) wasn't managed, resulting in an ER visit on his first night after the surgery. Trying to get a callback from Dr. Lutta's emergency line was stressful with my husband wailing in the background at 3 AM. When he did call back, we were informed that he must have a low pain tolerance. In fact, it took three additional doses of opioids on top of his Percocet, including a dose of fentanyl, to get his pain under control.... Pain that could have easily been managed by ibproufen, which Dr. Lutta so thoughtlessly prescribed after the ER visit. Two weeks later, after good progress and weaning off of painkillers, he was experiencing intense pain and had to return to his painkillers. The office showed NO urgency in getting him in despite these warning signs and scheduled him for two days later. I had to call the office and fight for a next day appointment. Turns out he had developed an infection. It was very obvious to the PA we saw. They ran tests and yet they sent him home with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. We were again scheduled to see Dr. Lutta days a couple days later. By that time, my husband was physically ill, feverish, and in pain. Dr. Lutta stated the obvious "he has an infection," and tried to send him home again. Again, I had to fight the staff on this and Lutta finally agreed with me I should take him to the ER. He was admitted for 6 days for his infection and finally we got another infectious disease doctor onboard for his care. He also needed a second surgery. His infection that was blatantly ignored (after a BONE SURGERY) resulted in not only all this, but another six weeks of home care, a PICC line to deliver his IV antibiotics, additional ER visits, and thousands of dollars in additional bills to get him well again. We are incredibly lucky that he is still here and just now healthy with a CLOSED wound site as of this month. An infection after bone surgery is nothing to fool around with and Ortho Virginia completely disregarded our concerns at every intersection of this process. We filed a complaint with the office, but of course, never heard back. Countless times, in the office, we have had to remind staff to wear gloves and wash hands prior to handling my husband's wound care because of the active infection he experienced. In fact, at his level of heightened complications, I'm not even sure why Ortho Virginia would have Med techs involved in his care at any level. I would RUN from this practice. It seems that if your issue is cut and dry without any complications, maybe your experience ends up being fine or even good, but we kept hearing how rare my husband's conditions were and my response to that is: rare does not mean it's not happening and it took a lot of kicking and screaming to get someone in that office to really listen and not dismiss what was going on with him. We are incredibly lucky he has made a full recovery and we will ensure that we, our family, and our friends NEVER visit this office for Orthopedic care. read more

This is typical of the "service" you could expect if you ever did get an appointment - there would never be any follow-up to your problem. Really liked the doctor. Surgery went well. Unfortunately the follow ups were difficult. Front desk staff is adversarial and rude. Sat in a waiting room and then an exam room for an hour at 8am. I asked to reschedule and they said no problem. I got billed for leaving without seeing the doctor. One more visit and that was it for me. These guys are so concerned about saving a buck on lousy staff that they fail to realize that decent working people won't be back or recommend this operation. read more

My 1 star rating is not because of the surgeon. The front desk staff don't know what a greeting is. The minute you walk in the door it's just "What's your last name?" There's no smiles. Just expect bitter and annoyed people that make you feel like you've burdened them. The lady at the desk was on a personal phone call while checking me in. As I was checking out the receptionist failed to let me know I could schedule appointments on the weekends as well as other locations...That bit of information could be very helpful to patients. My one star review was because of me overall patient experience being terrible from the staff not the doctors. Dr. Scott was nothing but amazing from start to finish. He was very thorough and clear about options and was very patient addressing all my questions and concerns. I truly hope this practice gets it together. read more

Surprise Billing Whenever I had an injury playing sports I would defer to OrthoVirginia to have it examined and then do therapy with them. I can now say that won't be the case anymore. For past therapy visits, they would let you know how much you owed when you went to check out, but that wasn't the case this time. I had scheduled 4 days of therapy for my shoulder and after my first visit I got a bill for little over $200 after insurance. I thought this was for all four visits but apparently not. After each appointment I would go to the desk to check out and each time all they said was that I was good to go. So, based on past experiences, I took this to mean I didn't owe them money. However, a couple weeks after my last appointment I get a bill in the mail saying I owe them $373 and the original $208 payment I made was only for the first visit. All this after insurance by the way. I can safely say I will not be going to them anymore if they now have a new policy of surprise billing. read more
