As a long time, patient at Ortho Virgina, I canot say enough good things about the practice in Northern Virginia. I have had a long-term relationship with Dr Martinelli since his days as a resident in the Navy and more recently with Dr Stephen Hughes and his PA Jennifer Leaman. They all make you feel like you are the most important patient to them. Dr Cherrick (Pain Management) is a wonderful credit to their practice as is her PA team. I have had multiple Knee (including TKR for both knees) and Ankle surgeries followed by two back surgeries with fusion. Anyone considering any othropedic care should check them out. Bill W. I would give them 0 stars if I could. I saw Dr. Switaj in summer of 2024, who spent maybe 10 minutes total with me. He sent me to his orthotist for custom orthotics, which I had to pay out of pocket for, and really didn't do much for my foot pain. I was told after my last orthotist visit that I had paid in full. I was very surprised to get a bill for $10 in December 2025, more than a year after my last visit. I tried to talk to at least 2 different people, one of which allegedly sent the bill to the "back room" where the decisions were made. I continue to get bills from them, and now they are threatening to take me to collections. I consider their actions to be harassment. I will reluctantly pay the bill, but will not be scheduling with any of the doctors in the practice in the future! read more

Came here for an MRI on my left ankle. I came around 6PM which was interesting because the entire parking lot was basically empty and when I walked in the building it felt like a scene from a horror film. After I walk into the suite I was greeted by other patients and staff which brought relief. I came early hoping they might be moving quicker than expected, but I was seen at my scheduled time. After filling out paperwork (well the tablet of questions), I was taken to the bathroom/changing room/locker room where you can leave your stuff in a free locker. It was perfect as i needed to remove some piercings before getting started. My MRI lasted about 20 minutes. The machine is loud, but they provided earplugs thankfully. I have no complaints, they handed me a CD with the imaging and I went on about my way. read more

WAY TOO much problem to check in EVERY TIME!! Totally overly done check in process. EVERY time I go to an appointment I have to #1, Sit and wait for them to send me a "Code" which doesn't always come. THEN you still have to give them too much info prove you're not an imaginary person that sits around and tries to steal your appointment! How silly can Va. Ortho be anyway? Then once to waste your time on line, you have to repeat it all once you arrive for your PT appointment. It is an annoying over kill for NO REASON! Who wants your PT appointment after all? Also, the people sitting at the reception can EASILY do it in 3 seconds but instead tell you to "DO IT YOURSELF" and point to the single screen in the corner with other customers standing in line for it!! If I could give them no stars I would. As the largest orthopedic office in the commonwealth they employ bright minds who become compromised the business of medicine. I could spare you how I spent 6 months in a cast before surgery and how it took them three times to wrap my ankle after surgery. terrible care - but the big take away is their billing department is so poor it will leave you in disbelief as to how heinous their accounting and communication are regarding any billing with insurance. They loose documentation, blame the patient and refuse to take accountability for their mistakes. read more

Expressing my opinion and my experiences. Others' experiences and opinions may differ. Process as you see fit. Excellent at aggressively pushing discretionary surgeries onto patients, materially underestimating out-of-pocket costs and collecting said amounts in full before performing the surgery, billing nearly double that amount afterwards because 'we guessed wrong" (I would have understood 10% to 15% mistake but not nearly double), failing to produce details about such additional charges as compared to their initial estimates, ignoring inquiries about invoices and unwillingness to compromise, giving the "run around" in finding the right person to address invoices, losing patient account records (guess HIPPA compliance is an issue), and then aggressively pursuing monetary collections. The only thing good about the Reston location is that they have a large fish tank with a beautiful collection of fish in their reception area, although they apparently use as bait to keep their patients from leaving only to meet with the surgery-promoting "sharks" in the patient rooms. A few years ago, one doctor insisted on surgery (must have needed to meet his quota) without discussing less intrusive alternatives like simply working out at a gym; glad I went the gym route (after consulting another physician with a plan) since my pain and nerve damage has been gone since that Ortho Va appointment two years ago. We get it; there are pressures on the individual doctors to "cut" and reap large financial rewards for the sake of the corporate bottom line. For me, I simply gave up, swiped my VISA, paid their additional charges, and called it a day. However, if you are an individual of moderate financial means, be prepared for the underquote followed by the large backend charge; think twice if your financial means are unable to weather the assault that comes afterwards. read more

Very difficult to speak with anyone in person. You get put on hold for long periods. If you select their call back option, they don't actually call you back when "the next representative is available", but instead bump you to a list that they call at the end of the day. Since I often can't answer my phone when I am working, it is extremely difficult to communicate with them. This creates a high level of frustration and doesn't foster trust. read more

They will drop some of your payments and create wrong bills, and when you try to fix it, you'll have to spend hours & hours on the phone trying to reach out to them, and after all, this will also take several attempts to have your bill fixed. if you need to stick to your doctors in this place, then review your bills very very carefully. read more

My experience at OrthoVirginia at Johnston Willis. I was more than shocked when I got my "results" with the "good news". NO injury? Then I read the After-Visit report very clearly stating the opposite of what I was told! (I've since printed & photocopied the reports). I can only speculate as to why I was actually lied to... by a doctor! The worst part of course is that I have an unrepaired injury that has been very painful and I'm back to square one after two very long months. read more

We were WAY over charged for our daughters care ( sprain) They make you sign a waiver stating that you will cover any costs insurance won't cover. THEY WILL NOT TREAT you if you don't sign this. In addition to my most recent experience as described below, I had a similar experience a month prior with another doctor at this practice. This doctor insisted that surgery was my only option and he claimed that he was well qualified to cut open and operate on a patient with EDS that would result in a successful surgery. After he was finished explaining the surgical method that would be used, I asked him if he had ever operated on a person with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. He replied with, "No.". Hm. Having a rare disorder often places you in positions where you may find yourself dealing with inexperienced physicians with large egos that don't know what EDS is, aside from what they've read in a book. Their pride (incompetence) makes it nearly impossible for them to admit that they don't know something and getting a doctor to be honest and admit that they don't know crap about EDS is incredibly difficult. I've dealt with a lot of doctors like this so as soon as this doctor began talking about operating on an EDS patient when having no prior experience doing so, I knew immediately that I would never let this doctor nor any other doctor at this practice operate on me. I went in for a second opinion last week with an orthopedic surgeon who is well versed in EDS, and who had completed dozens of successful surgical repairs on patients with EDS. He informed me that the method that was described in my chart from orthoVirgina by the physician there was not what is recommended for patients with EDS. I was told by this EDS specialist that if I would have chosen to have my repair surgery done by orthoVirgina, not only would the surgery have been a catastrophic failure but I would likely be worse off than I am now. I had my MRI scheduled wity them my appointment was at 4 pm. I arrived 3:45 p.m. lady at front desk was not friendly. When she handed me the tablet for paperwork I saw the appointment tome at 4:30. I toldher my appointment is at 4 and she replied carelessly we say 4 so you be early I waited until 4:40 then asked her how long should I wait. Ahe replied 12 more minutes!!!! One hour waiting until I was called for my MRI. the nurse was rude. I told her I've been waiting long she said we are running behind. They not explain or apologized for they messed up schedule. The MRI room wasnot ready and still there was a patient there! So another waiting for the not ready room. I told her that she made me wait more. My son (15) began experiencing back pain two weeks ago (4/1) after a baseball game. After a week, there was no change even with rest so we took him to the walk-in clinic in Springfield on Monday 4/11. He saw Dr. Martinelli who spent about 5 minutes with him. The x-rays were clear and he cleared him to play. He did order an MRI and gave us a card to go see Dr. Hughes. My son only hit in his game the next day (didn't play the field) and experienced the same pain, so we decided he was done until he could get his MRI and get seen by Dr. Hughes. He had his MRI on 4/14 and we were seen by Dr. Hughes's PA on 4/15. It was hands-down the worst experience I've ever had at the doctor's with either one of my children. I don't even know where to start. She was friendly when she first came into the room and asked my son a couple of questions. She then pulled up the MRI and clicked around a bit back and forth. She sat down and got very serious with some tears in her eyes and told my son that he was done with all sports for 3 months because his lumbar spine had a fracture. No activity at all except for walking. VERY dramatic. He then started crying and then I even welled up. She said he would need to wear a brace at all times except for when sleeping and that he should start PT after 3 months. She left the room and brought my son a water and some Coke and then left again to get some assistants to bring in the brace. At that time, she also handed me a prescription for a CT scan because she couldn't really tell from the MRI if he had a fracture. She left while they were fitting fitted my son for the brace and said she would come back. The brace was $400.00. She DID NOT do any type of exam. We got up and left. My son was devastated at her diagnosis and at that point I was sad and angry. My son never saw Dr. Hughes. When we got home, I started googling. At first, I thought I would find a specialist at Children's. I then found Virginia Spine Institute and called and they scheduled my son for an appointment this morning with Dr. Colin Haines. He is a neurosurgeon and the director of research at the Institute. (I am not super religious, but this man is absolutely an angel.) My son's appt. today was NIGHT and DAY from our experience on Friday and I cannot even tell you how thankful I am that we were able to be seen so quickly by Dr. Haines. I will say the PA at OrthoVA was absolutely correct with the diagnosis. My son has a pars fracture in his lumbar spine. The difference is that they explained everything to us, they were not dramatic and they assured my son that they would get him back playing baseball, basketball and football. The treatment plan is also very different. First, he does not need the $400 brace as that type of treatment is outdated and shown not to make any kind of positive difference. (I've called to see if we can return that.) He will start PT tomorrow and go 3x a week for 6 weeks. He will be seen again at Virginia Spine in 3 weeks to see where we are after 3 weeks of PT and then again in 6 weeks. They are hopeful he will be cleared after 6 weeks. If not, the next step is a cortizone injection and then 2-5% of patients may need stem cell therapy if that doesn't work. We left feeling confident and with a whole new perspective. My advice to anyone with back/shoulder pain is to skip OrthoVa and go to Virginia Spine in Reston. read more

Total scam. They charge you for a specific amount of time in the doctors office which isn't accurate (and they admitted that on the phone to me). They've also had a cyber security attack and had everyone's PHI and PII affected, but we only found out when we tried to get a copy of xrays we had done. They charge for services but refuse to release any of the records to other doctors. Also, the lady in the billing office is hands down the rudest person I've spoken with in the last month. She makes the DMV look like Princess Diana. It's a shame this is how they treat a veteran. read more

Care is terrible - phone system has been broken for several years - most of the receptionists you get on the phone are rude - and the worst is that I was misdiagnosed - likely several times. I am in significant pain, and they gave me a shoulder injection that I didn't need - referred me to a jiffy lube like pain specialist - "authorized" me for an MRI at the wrong location - over prescribed prednisone - after so many appointments. If you choose OthoVirginia for surgery BEWARE: They are NOT honest with you regarding the use of anesthesia. In my case they said it would only be a 'local'; INSTEAD they not only administered a 'general' but also a NERVE-BLOCK. I STILL have NEGATIVE affects from that UNapproved nerve block. Additionally, they terminated rehab before the rehab was anywhere near complete.. The surgery itself was acceptable. read more

I made an appointment to see Dr. Mark McMahon. The receptionist asked about the nature of the visit. I told her I needed knee replacements and wanted to pursue this with Dr. McMahon. At the appointment in the exam room, his PA asked for my medical history and why I wanted to see Dr. McMahon. I told her I needed knee replacements and also had pain in my hips and back. At Dr. McMahon's request, she ordered X-rays for these areas. Then Dr. McMahon entered the room, introduced himself, explained the X-ray results, and encouraged me to ask questions. I asked him about how he performed knee replacement surgery. He informed me that I couldn't get on his schedule because he was retiring in a few months. What?? So everyone in his practice knew I was there to consult with him for knee surgery, yet only after X-rays were ordered and taken did Dr. McMahon disclose that he was retiring. It was a total waste of my time and it was deceptive. I contacted Neil Uppal, a manager, who offered me a visit with another doctor right before surgery. This was not acceptable. I asked that I not be billed for the office visit. I also contacted the Ortho Virginia COO and spokesperson. I received no response. I continue to be billed for this office visit. What kind of a practice conducts itself in such a way? I hope my experience can save prospective patients from experiencing the same fate. read more

Doctors here tend to jump to whatever conclusion they feel like writing for the day. Little time is spent with the patient and the conversation tends to be one sided. Document everything when dealing with the billing department. I've received a court summons in the mail do to the misinformation from the billing department. I was told I had time to pay off my invoice that my insurance didn't cover as long as I made an effort and things got paid (6mon time limit). Unfortunately during my recovery I was let go from my job, hence why I needed time. I thought I had a chance to pay off $2000 with in a 6 mon period. 4 months in I went on the portal to pay more than half the invoice and couldn't due to no access. I called and spoke to some one. That person said I had to make the whole payment right then and there. I explained my recent conversations and the person on the other end did not care. I also pointed out to the lady that I have made an effort a week prior and made a payment. Still gave me a cold response. I couldn't believe nothing was noted on my account. Absolutely nothing. I could have gotten this handled if Ortho held up there end of our verbal agreement. I've never stepped a foot in any court room in my life. I've never heard of a doctors office taking patients to court over a bill. I could have paid this a long time ago. read more

I had two surgeries here. The first one was smooth without any problems. The second one was terrible. The surgical center was great except a nurse falsely documented my recovery. She should have been fired. It is often difficult to get in contact with a person to speak to someone. The phone system is typically down. Their billing department is difficult to get in contact with too and often doesn't respond to questions even in the portal system. They erroneously filed surgeries, follow-up appointments, and PT with both of my insurances. They have told me I owe money, however, my portal account says I do not. When requesting documentation, they is no response from the billing department. read more

I have been suffering serve pain and numbness in both hands and forearms. I've been treated by my family doctor and a chiropractor. Both helped very little. I finally had enough. I called Ortho Virginia and made a appointment. I was seen by Dr. Ian Smithson. He was very informative about what was my problem. I had carpal tunnel and elbow nerve release. Both hands and elbow's were operated on with 100% fixed my issue. Dr. Smithson is very kind, knowledgeable, great surgeon. My surgical site healed amazing. Dr. Smithson makes you feel as if your his only patient and very attentive. I have and will keep recommending him. All of Ortho Virginia is amazing patient's care. read more

We drove from our home in western Loudoun County because we were told the doctor in McLean was a hand specialist. Our 93 year old mother's wrist and hand were swollen and red. The doctor decided to put on a splint. We explained that she will remove it before we get home and asked for a more permanent type cast. He said he understood but when he instructed the attendants in the next room he told them to just wrap the area so that she can take it off. We mentioned that she would remove the wrap and we were told that the ace wrap would harden after 10 minutes; first it will get warm and then harden in place. When departing, and talking with the front desk the doctor was not at all a hand specialist. The bandage never hardened and mother had it off within 15 minutes of arriving home. This is our second terrible experience with OrthoVa. The last time it was the same underlying problem-the workers do not know at all what they are doing and have no problems lying. The doctors do not oversee the untrained staff and act like they couldn't give a hoot. Never visit this place if you want to use your limbs again. read more

I've been a patients of Dr Pettrone's for over 3 years and after repeated terrible service I've decided to discontinue giving them by business. Overall my issue is two-fold; One, the wait time is absurd. I've waited over an hour every single time. This most recent time I had my 6 month old with me, and still had to wait 50 minutes. I've mentioned this issue to the Dr and his staff, and they've seemed indifferent. Even post-surgery, I showed up in major pain on the verge of tears, and yet, still had an hour wait to see the Dr. Two, I had major knee surgery for a loose knee cap and runners knee, and I was shocked at what important information was NOT mentioned to me prior to surgery. I was not told I would be in a leg brace from my groin to my ankle until after surgery, which is a big deal because it was difficult to dress with. I was not told I would barely be able to walk for WEEKS. The day of surgery I was asked if I wanted to purchase an ice machine to ice my leg for $200, with the alternate option being to use a bag of frozen peas. I opted for purchasing the machine and had I not, the bag of frozen peas wouldn't have cut it, but it would have been nice to know about the machine prior to day of surgery since it was yet another expense that I needed to budget for. The lack of post-op info provided was ridiculous. Dr Pettrone is a nice man and seemingly a good Dr, but the staff and service overall is so terrible that I wouldn't recommend OrthoVirginia to anyone. read more

My issue is with the nurse/medical assistant whom we saw before the doctor. He ordered the x-rays even though it was not necessary. Wait, think 10 times before you go for Surgery with Dr. Steven Hughes. I had a herniated disk (L4-L5) that was pushing on the sciatic nerve causing pain in the upper and lower part of my leg when I saw Dr. Steven Hughes at OrthoVirginia. After he looked at my MRI, he told me that I have two options, I can take epidural shot with 50/50 chance of reducing the pain or I can permanently solve the problem by doing a microdiscectomy procedure. When I asked the doctor about the procedure, he told me that he does more than ten procedures every week and it is a simple procedure with a success rate of like 96-97% where they cut like 1-2 cm and they go in and remove the bulged disk. He also told me that the recovery time for this is around 2 days and I can go back to my normal life. The moment I heard how simple the procedure is, I signed up for the surgery. After I signed up for the surgery, I scheduled time with him so he can go through things with me ahead of the surgery. When I went to see the doctor, his EA told me that he had an emergency and he cannot see me, and it is ok that he will talk to me on the day of the surgery. On the day of surgery and after the nurses prepped me and put the IV in my arm with the medication, the doctor came to see me. He told me that he will be doing laminectomy instead of microdiscectomy, and it is very much like the microdiscectomy with similar success rates. I had no idea what is the difference between the two since when I saw him the first time, he told me that we will be doing a microdiscectomy and asked me to read about it. At that point of time when I was lying on the hospital bed, ready to go to surgery, I had no choice but to trust what he was telling me. After the surgery I saw Dr. Steven Hughes and Dr. Jennifer Leeman who assisted him during the surgery. Dr. Hughes told me that the surgery was "great" and I should start feeling the relief from the pain immediately. I stayed that day in the hospital and the next day after the surgery I was feeling great with almost no pain. It seems that I was feeling no pain because I was under pain killers and the effect of the pain killers start to wain down, I started to feel the pain again. This time the pain was even worse than before the surgery, it was spreading down to my leg and to my toes. I went back to Dr. Hughes, after I did another MRI and he saw that the disk is still there and hitting on my nerve. He told me that it is rare that something like this to happen, but it happened, and he told me that we can do another surgery or use epidural shots... he did not tell me simply that the procedure was a big failure. I tried to see many doctors, but they all refused to see me. Some of them said they can only see me after one year and others said they cannot see me before 6 months from my surgery. I was in excruciating pain for over a month that I thought about ending my life several times. A close friend of mine after she saw what I was going through talked to a friend of hers who is an orthopedic. I was so lucky that I met this other doctor. He accepted my case and did the second surgery which, thank to God, was a success. Now I am pain free! No thanks to Dr. Hughes who had a conflict of interest putting me under the knife (think how much a doctor makes from a surgery vs. giving you a shot or try other means!) and I was stupid to believe him that the surgery is so simple with only few days of recovery!!! read more

Later when I needed to contact him, OrthoViginia jumped out to reject my contact. The woman answering the phone said this is not the doctor's office, you need to talked to that office. I asked about the doctor office's phone number, she said their phone is not working today. I told her I could call tomorrow, she still refused giving me the phone number, so the phone was not working was an excuse. Then she said their phone number is on their web site. I got the web site address and logged on, there was no such phone number. I told her this. Then she said "I would send you an email" I waited for a few days, no email from them was received. I called again on the same day, she no longer answer my calls, it looked she knew this number was for questions. Lie after lie. That is OrthoViginia. Dr. Stephen Huges is truly amazing as is his PA-C assistant Jennifer Leeman and PA-C Jeffrey Hamilton. On February 1, I woke up in extreme pain that was just under my shoulder blade and ran down the length of my left arm. On the third day the pain was worse and I was losing strength in my arm and feeling in my fingers. I googled Orthopedic doctors and saw that OrthoVirginia had an office a few minutes from my work. I called at 8 a.m. and had an appointment at 9:30 a.m. with Jeff Hamilton. He was kind, compassionate and thorough. I had x-rays taken at the office and after his review of the x-rays he ordered an MRI and prescribed pain medication and let me know the pain was originating in my neck. He gave me the names of the physicians at OrthoNova who specifically treat patients with neck pain. My plan was to choose the physician closest to my work but after I mentioned Dr. Hughes name to my boss and a co-worker both said go with Dr. Hughes. My boss had heard through the years that Dr. Hughes in known for conservatively treating his patients and does not recommend surgery for every patient that walks into his office. I also told a coworker that I was going to schedule my follow-up with Dr. Hughes and she said she personally knows a staff member at OrthoVirginia that raves about Dr. Hughes. In the interim while I was waiting on my insurance to approve the MRI, I tried to get some relief from the pain with a physical therapist. I told him I was going to schedule my follow-up with Dr. Hughes and he said he was going to reach out to some colleagues and see if anyone had any feedback on Dr. Hughes. The feedback he got was extremely positive in connection with Dr. Hughes but also the practice in general. That was enough for me, I immediately scheduled my appointment with Dr. Hughes so I wouldn't have to wait for an appointment once my MRI was complete. A few days later, and with pain that was affecting all aspects of my life, I was told by my insurance company on the day that my MRI was scheduled that they were denying it because they wanted me to try pain management and physical therapy for six months. I contacted Jeff Hamilton and told him I was going to pay for the MRI out of pocket and was there anything more I could do to ease the pain. He immediately contacted my insurance company and within a few hours the MRI was approved and I was scheduled to see Dr. Hughes the following week. The staff at OrthoVirginia was fantastic and the assistant had my MRI pulled up and ready for Dr. Hughes. When Dr. Hughes walked in, he introduced himself, asked me a few questions, tested the strength in my arm and discussed the numbness in my fingers and turned to the MRI reviewed it first and then reviewed it in detail with me. It turns out I had herniated discs at C6-C7 and the severe pain was nerve pain from discs pressing on the nerves. He told me I needed surgery, and explained every aspect of the surgery including pre and post surgery and everything in between. I had spent days educating myself about what could be causing my pain and what options I would be given. I had no hesitation when Dr. Hughes said I needed surgery. I had done research on my own and asked co-workers, my physical therapist, and family members and not once did anyone have anything negative to say about Dr. Hughes. My surgery was at Fairfax Hospital Outpatient Surgical Center. I was impressed with the entire experience. From pre-op a few days before and the care I received on the day of my surgery from the entire staff, and there were many, was professional and caring. Dr. Hughes and Jennifer Leeman both personally came in before my surgery to speak with me and my husband and answer any questions we had and Dr. Hughes took my husband's cell number and personally called him when my surgery was complete. I also had the best recovery nurse, I don't recall her name but she was wonderful and was with me up until I was released early that evening. I have been pain free since the surgery, which is still unbelievable to me considering the level of pain I was in prior to the surgery. My scar is minimal and will fade within a few months. I was given pain medication but I only needed Tylenol for a few days and nothing since. I did not need a neck brace and I was working from home on Monday after surgery the prior Wednesday. I had a follow-up appointment that Friday, 10 days post-surgery and was released to work and drive but was given an order for PT. Dr. Hughes wanted me to work on regaining the strength that I had lost in my arm and hand from the discs was pressing on the nerves. I know my review is long and only positive, but this was truly my experience with Dr. Hughes and OrthoVirginia, there was nothing negative about my experience from start to finish and I would recommend Dr. Hughes, Jennifer Leeman, PA-C, Jeffrey Hamilton, PA-C and the entire staff of OrthoVirginia to anyone needing an orthopedic practice. read more
