I can't believe I'm the first to review Dr. Cross and his staff! If you need a surgeon, this is…read morethe surgeon to see! Dr. Cross took out my gall bladder 10 years ago, then my appendix 4 years ago. A year and a half ago I returned for "the hat trick" and he removed my thyroid. Not only is he incredibly skilled, but he has the best bedside manner I have ever seen in any doctor, and trust me, I have seen a lot of doctors! His staff is amazing. December 2012 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and my family doctor was less than helpful, barely acknowledging my results - guess my cancer diagnosis interrupted his holidays (Dec 26th). Not knowing what to do, I started googling and saw that surgery was a typical first step.. I called Dr. Cross's office and his nurse Sandy and his receptionist talked to me at great length about thyroid cancer, giving me various resources and information, with care and understanding. And they made me an appt. I was in to see Dr. Cross within a few days. Remember, this was over the Christmas holiday when most offices are closed or completely booked. He fit me in, no questions asked. I have seen Dr. Cross multiple times, for 3 surgeries, and recoveries. In the many appointments I have had with him, he has NEVER rushed me, never glossed over my questions or concerns, has even comforted me when I cried about not knowing what to do. While in the hospital recovering, he visited me each day, always warm and understanding, explaining test results and making sure the hospital staff was treating me right. :). He works well with my specialists and primary care doctor, always sending reports and results on to them. Not only is he a gifted surgeon, but a great person. Treating with knowledge and compassion. Hard to find both in one surgeon.

I want to start off by saying that the doctors, physician assistants, surgical coordinators, nurses and surgical team are great. They are kind, efficient and great to deal with. The problem for me is 100% the front desk staff. I had two visits that required me to deal with the people at the front desk. On my 1st visit, I greeted the front desk staff with an enthusiastic "Good Morning". There were two young ladies at the front & neither said good morning back. Initially, I thought they were just an unhappy bunch. It was a Monday and maybe they were just having a bad morning. However, I noticed that they DID respond to other people saying "Good Morning" to them with a caveat; after observing them for a bit, I realized their behavior was RACIALLY motivated & they were responding to the WHITE people differently than people of color! I couldn't believe it initially, and told myself I must be wrong. Surely these people can't be actually responding DIFFERENTLY to people based on the color of their skin! My second visit, however, confirmed this for me. The second time, there was only one woman at the front desk, but she was also one of the women who was there the first time I came in. I should note that it was very early in the morning and I was the second patient in the office. I greeted her warmly with a "Good Morning". She looked me dead in my face and said nothing. I said it again. Again she said nothing, but continued to look at me. At that point, I asked her why she didn't say good morning. AGAIN, she didn't answer. She just stood there looking at me! We LITERALLY stood there looking at each other until I asked her if she was going to answer me. As she looked at me, she coldly said "Name?". I told her my name. She looked through a stack of papers and pulled out my paperwork and said I needed to pay a certain amount. The amount was higher than I expected because it included my deductible. When I asked her to look into that because I had already prepaid my deductible on my very first visit, she had a visible attitude and told me she had already checked and the amount was right. She then proceeded to tell me some nonsense about the visit deductible not being the same as the deductible for my procedure. I calmly explained that I overpaid on my first visit intentionally because I knew I would have to pay my deductible and I told her the exact amount I paid, which she recognized to be higher than my copay for the office visit. She rolled her eyes and told me she would need to talk to billing. She got up and went into another room and after about 3 minutes, she walked back out with the amount changed on another piece of paper and handed it to me. She didn't say a word. I handed her my card & she processed the payment. She wasn't nice or courteous at all! When she handed me back the card, I just sat down and waited to be seen. She didn't tell me what would happen next! I waited for a bit and my appointment time came and went. I saw people who came after me get called back. I knew they could be seeing other doctors, but I hadn't been given any information. I didn't even want to speak to her again after her initial attitude, but I walked up to politely ask her if she knew when I would be seen. She said there were multiple people ahead of me. I was confused by that because I was the second person in the office that day, but I didn't want to ask her anything else because her manner was so brusque, so I emailed my surgical coordinator to tell her I was out front and ask her when I was going to be seen. She came out from the back and told me. As I sat in the front waiting to go back, I watched this woman be nice to others and I realized that what I had experienced initially was totally correct. She was nice as pie to the white people and ONLY short with people who were not white! WOW! In 2022, she was the face of medical, front desk discrimination! It is unfortunate because once you get around the front desk, EVERYONE else was spectacular! Even though everyone else was so great, I can't, in good conscience, rate the practice higher because who knows what a racist person will do to your medical records or your medical billing! They may intentionally screw up to cause you problems or they might intentionally tell you something wrong. They could also do nothing more than mistreat you when you come in. You just don't know! Why should anyone have to deal with that type of mistreatment? I treat everyone with kindness and love and I just couldn't imagine treating someone poorly based on the color of their skin! I guess everyone doesn't think the same way I do. I hope the practice changes their front desk staff because front desk people should be warm & welcoming to EVERYONE who walks in the door irrespective of the color of the patient's skin! Always treat people how YOU want to be treated!

The doctor was to write a prescription for me to get later in the day after my procedure. He said he was going to call that into the pharmacy. After a couple hours being home (giving some time for it to be called in), I could not find where he had called in the script. I contacted the office via phone and email but didn't get ahold of anyone immediately. When I was subsequently contacted, I was informed that I had not supplied a pharmacy. That took me by surprise for several reasons. First, I don't recall being asked about my pharmacy that day. Second, I provided that exact information during registration for the procedure a few weeks prior. Third, as they are part of the INOVA system, they have access to my records in Epic, which already states my preferred pharmacy. Fourth, on top of that, once they knew they couldn't call in a script to a pharmacy I wasn't informed of the problem. Instead of resting like I was supposed to, I had to chase down a prescription. Beyond that, the procedure was great. The staff were great! Dr. Kevin O'Conner was my surgeon. A+ there. The practice really deserves the 5 stars. The thing about the prescription hurt the experience though. That's such an individual issue that I can't hold it against the practice. Points 2 and 3 above are frustrations that exist at all practices.

I heard about this place from my in-home therapist following my total knee replacement surgery. The front office staff is friendly, accommodating, and remembers your name as soon as you walk in the door. The physical therapists: Allison, Rachel, & Stephanie are all very skilled, always running on time, and ask all the right questions. The specialists: Barrett & Addy are friendly and know their stuff. Every appointment starts with 30 minutes 1-on-1 with the PT where they ask relevant questions, take measurements, and give a hands-on massage of the trouble area. Then you move to a full hour with the specialist. They take you through all the exercises recommended by the therapist. The final 10 minutes is for ice. They use the MedBridge GO app that runs on your phone. They can download your individual exercises right to the app. The app then shows you a video of the exercise, in case you forgot, and reminds you how many times a day, sets, and reps for each one. You mark them complete as you finish them. If you only have an hour for PT, this might not be the place for you, but if time is not an issue, you will get the biggest bang for your buck here. You will not feel rushed, but you are busy the entire time. Highly recommend!
