[Review #769] 2023-056 Park Hours: 1 hour before sunrise - 1 hour after sunset; facilities: 9:00 AM - dusk daily. Robert E. Ryan Community Park is located up in the hills on the south side of RPV. We were here early summer to hold South Bay Chinese School's 2023 graduation picnic. This park has many features/amenities: picnic areas, playground, tot lot, bbq grills, baseball diamond, basketball court, activity room & patio. The activity room accommodates 20 people & is available for rent; it includes: tables & chairs, small outdoor patio, counter space, & sink. Restrooms are available, & were clean & stocked that Saturday afternoon... definitely family-friendly with a changing table. Dogs are allowed at the park, but must be leashed. And the park has limited parking spaces, & you can also park along Hawthorne Blvd. RERCP was renovated a couple of years ago with a beautiful mural & info of the resident Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly. There's also a huge blue butterfly that's great for taking pics as though you've grown a pair of wings to flutter in the park. ;-) Initially thought to be extinct in 1983, a small number were found in the area in 1994 so a space has been set aside to grow locoweed & deerweed, a flowering plant & perennial subshrub source for their livelihood. I did see a couple of butterflies but it wasn't the Blue Butterfly. I don't believe reservations are available for the picnic areas & we sent our TAs to hold/cordon a section for our school. There's plenty of grassy fields for the kids to run around, however, we didn't plan for any activities, just a gathering for the students & their families to celebrate graduation & hang out. Some of the younger set went to the 2 play structures, & played hide & seek around the grassy area -- lots of trees to hide behind! It was a fairly hot, sunny day peppered with some cool breeze to enjoy our last day together before we head off for summer break.

This park would suit me better if I weren't an old broad with a bum knee. Thank goodness for the access ramps because the stairs & bumpy grass slopes are a bit much for me. The space is large & grassy & hilly. Those paved "paths" leading to nowhere are actually drainage channels - not easy to walk upon. So....this is a place to bring the kids & your leashed dog, but not necessarily a spot for granny to stroll. Having first reviewed the park almost 12 years ago, I stopped by yesterday, Sunday, to see if anything had changed. Nope, not much. The trees have grown a tad bigger, as have I. Upon exiting my car I heard the cracking of golf clubs against balls from adjacent Los Verdes course but didn't see any flying, head-conking small objects. Ryan Park was the first park in Rancho Palos Verdes, dating back to 1973 when the city was incorporated. Some renovations were done in 2011 to upgrade the basketball court & athletic field. In addition to the b-ball court & baseball diamond the park includes: Free (long & narrow) parking lot. Ocean views on a clear day. Large flat grass area at bottom of the hill. Big shade trees covering about half the park space. Smallish community center building with clean restrooms, activities room & patio (avail for rent). Multiple picnic areas with BBQ grills. Drinking fountains. Poop bag dispenser for your leashed dog(s). And...I saved the best for last: several kiddie playground areas that include swings & ample equipment. Last year my visiting out-of-towners took an Uber the short distance from Terranea to Ryan Park with their toddler so she could burn off energy....and they loved the place. On a warm & sunny Sunday late morning the park was not crowded, as seen in my photos. It was a bit too hazy to fully capture the great ocean views. Something was going on in the little Community Center, where doors were open. Except for a few noisy passing motorcycles I really couldn't hear traffic on Hawthorne, which borders the park on two sides. Overall, it appeared that mostly local families were enjoying the park. I rather enjoyed it, too. I took a bunch of pics before dragging my load up da road back to my car. My knee survived the trek. Ryan Park survives, too, serving its community for almost 50 years.

It's amazing that I have never written a review about this park as it is one of my go-to, take a walk to and around, location. :-) This park is situation near the summit of Palos Verdes. From this, it provides a very nice view of the Pacific Ocean. This park is easily acceptable as it is located on Hawthorne Blvd. Once inside the park, it has several barbecue stoves, picnic tables, a full baseball diamond/soccer field, a basketball court, a child's playground, indoor restroom facility, and a very large green field/tree space to walk around, kick back on, or have a picnic. It is truly a complete recreational environment. This park is always very clean and well maintained. The fact is, it is a pretty space. One of the great things about this park is that though you will always see friendly people here; exercising, playing a sport, walking their dogs, or playing with their kids, you never feel crowded. This space is very large and there is room for everybody. Overall, this is a very nice and beautiful get away spot, right in the heart of a neighbor.

this park is a mess when making rounds with the kids to local area and trying to fill the day with small children in mind. It has three structures for various ages from toddlers to 5 to 12, swings, a large field, and a tree that's grown along the ground that lots of kids like to climb on. This is not a sand park, it's been replace by mulch so no need for sand toys. It receives four stars because two of the slides on one of the larger play structures has not been fixed in more than a year. Great view of the ocean nice ocean breeze parking is easy however a steep stairway down to the main park challenging if you're carrying a small child.

Fun play structures in great shape!

Palos Verdes is so beautiful anyway, and borders up against the most beautiful jagged coast line that it's tough to believe they have to even build public parks to coax people outside. But I understand when the kids are younger, one must find activities a bit more contained than jogging or cycling along the cliffs. On a clear day, this park gives you the mental vacation of being on the beautiful seaside cliffs while your young ones, or your friends hang out on the expansive green lawns, play a pick up game in the ball field or bbq under the pines. The playgrounds have newish equipment zoned by ages so that the kids have adventure after adventure! While there for my niece's 4th birthday today, there was also an older college age group of people hanging out, bbqing and we too enjoyed the sounds of one of their guests sax playing drifting through the trees. PARENTS: They have impeccable bathrooms. I've been in parks from Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan, Hawthorne, Lawndale and let me tell you these are THE BEST! All toilets have seats, all were cleaned that day. They have sinks with real soap and air or towel dry options. The spotless stainless steel changing table feels surgically sterile not slimey and the bathroom even has beautiful tile accents as though you're in someone's home. Today there was a "ranger?!" on guard keeping an eye on the place and let me say, that it makes a difference. Surprisingly, less than about 100 yards, there is another park - another adventure for another day. Our Three-thumb review is 3 thumbs up! My 10 year-old daughter could not get enough of the equipment playing on all of the playgrounds with her now 4 year old cousin. My 14 year-old son loved just running around the gently rolling hills (often with his niece piggie-back holding his poncho strings as reigns). I loved that even in the back end of the park there was a fence all around so the kids can't slip out into a sidewalk or the neighboring golf course. We also loved the fat little squirrels who got lucky when we dumped a tray of baby carrots "by accident." #ThreeThumbReviews

The City of Palos Verdes is probably the best city to live in the South bay and in Southern California. The park is situated blocks from the beach and adjacent to the Verdes golf course. There is a club room, basketball court, kids play area, picnic and barbecue area. So lot's activities for groups, families and kids. Views and ocean breezes are to die for. I train regularly with a group of martial artists on the grass area under the big tree. This is an ideal place and members don't mind driving miles to participate. Parking is free, bathrooms are immaculate and plenty of open space. Important read signs before entering. Some restrictions for pets, alcohol and vehicles.

With the help of over 65 volunteers a public arts project has been finished at Ryan Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Funding was granted by the city council. The project was carried out by the Parks and Recreation department. I personally budgeted and led the project as a city employee. The mural is a representation of the Rancho Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly. It is the most endangered butterfly in the world. Children can stand in front of the butterfly and be photographed looking like they have wings. It is a nice memory to take away from a wonderful day visiting the park.

The view of all 3 play structures together.

A nice park find. A huge park with so many things to do. Three different play structures for different age groups, baseball field, basketball court, tons of picnic tables and a huge grassy area to run around. Absolutely gorgeous and super spacious park.

Love, Love, Love this park!!! I've been coming here since I was in diapers, My grams lives around the corner. Gorgeous views of the Pacific ocean, Killer Sunsets and views of Catalina on a clear day. Lots of grass for the pooches, Plenty of swings and playground equipment. BBQ grills and benches for family gatherings. Be careful if you decide to park along the busy street, I recently saw a memorial for someone who got hit by a car, sad. RANDOM FACT: Many Japanese families dry farmed the south slope of the Peninsula

I love this park! It's always such a pleasure to be here and enjoy the nature. It's a great place to do birthday parties for kids because the park is so spacious and it has lunch tables. Many kids have parties and play on the structures. The employee is always super nice and engaging with visitors. There is a small stage area where you can perform little events. I've recorded dance videos before and it's newly painted. Amazing!

Cute park but lots of stairs to get to it.

We recently attended a children's party at the park. Once we located the Park we found the parking a little daunting. The spaces are limited and you have to navigate many steps to get to the main park area. The park itself is very pretty and where you can see the ocean the views are incredible. e discovered you have to get there early if you want one of the choice picnic ares but we did find a spot with a table and grill available The draw back was having to lug so much from the elevated parking lot. We enjoyed the park itself. There was room for the games and we found plenty of shade as well. we brought our large dogs and one draw back was the fear of ticks. There are signs posted but had we know we may not have brought them with us.

Prettiest view from a baseball diamond you're likely to find anywhere.

However, I respect and truly admire that they added a cultural term to modern vocabulary: the Tardis Effect, which basically means that you enter a space and it is more spacious and complex than you can imagine based on what you believe it can hold based on exterior. Another example is Snoopy's Dog house. And as a final example, I offer a person's head. It does not seem like it holds a lot but it holds an ever expansive universe of thoughts, ideas and memories. This park can serve as another example of the Tardis Effect. It is a small park, like legit tiny, but when you look from its multiple view points you see the vastness of the pacific ocean and shore lines, which can induces so much within your head universe. Like one time I went and I imagined that a sea monster would rise from the waters far away. The sea monster was like Godzilla, except purple and its blast were white and froze people to death. Missiles could not quell its fury. I imagined that the solution would have to be mystical like when Perseus defeated the Kraken using Medusa's head. I repeat that the park is small by feet or metric cubes, or what ever unit of measure is used to measure a park's length, but when you enter you will see more than you expected, if you let yourself. I wonder what the opposite of the Tardis Effect is? What is something that is super big but when you step inside is actual small. Hopefully, a whale's belly cause I might end up there one day and wish to survive. If you are not one who embraces imaginative trips, this place offers something more grounded: beautiful views that are plainly gorgeous. When you allow yourself to sit and view, you want to take pictures, you want to have a date, you want to have a meaningful conversation, you want to meditate. It is a small gulp of fresh air that can be released into a big space. Logistically, parking is hard to come by. I am a local so I park on the street nearby and walk. I do not have a parking permit, I find street parking. The walk from the park to the car is not that long and depending on your fitness level it can be exhausting or a breeze. I went today to hike some of its neighboring trails. And the trails were closed. So expect this place to be a treat, if you are the type of person who can take the small of the earth and see the large of the earth.
