As I wandered this neighborhood park at sunset one day, I pondered its name, and wondered why it's called Paradise Park. When the setting sun cast a heavenly crimson glow on the old-growth-looking pine trees, I had my answer. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/iVwwMO4ujSqkHCDMKmIVLg/l This park is next to Anza Elementary School, deep in a residential 'hood. I discovered it by "accident". The towering trees are the park's best feature, for me. There are pine, eucalyptus, and other big trees, as well as umpteen varieties of interesting smaller trees. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/VHaA5wSQD6zDGEs-brY9Vw/l A wise metaphysical woman told me, some 20 years ago, to hold on to a low-hanging tree branch when I needed help feeling grounded. And I often do, thanks Yanna Rose. Other people might be interested in the park's tennis courts, http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/xoTkFWCDV2SlQovnloKDPQ/l fitness equipment, http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/EwJEXjZYW7x9UWSUoVqzeg/l and the 3 kiddie play areas. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/lRse-vAKf_vbpqDfwmNOrQ/l http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/0Y_rfCv37QwMZP3ukvuWRw/l http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/9TgMwvhPJ7eP2a11G7VzDA/l There's a covered picnic place too, http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/RYxc6ycIPS1gUQ1P_ofgEQ/l as well as a big open grassy space. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/4PMe5QYpZNpxWFI-kE-3SQ/l So. When you're all stressed out, go to Paradise Park and shake hands with a tree, or two.

4.25 Stars This is a very cute park with lots of fun activities for the kids. There is a grown-up exercise area and tennis courts as well. The unique thing about this park is the large train, submarine and planet structures for the kids to explore. They also have 2 sizable play structures. The park felt safe in a nice part of Torrance. The other parents at the park were very friendly. There are many picnic tables and easy parking. It seems like a popular park even early on a Friday morning. The .75 deduction is because my son was practically black when we left this park. The sand is very dirty. We go to sandy parks all the time, but this sand is the dirtiest we have encountered. His legs looked like he was rolling in dirt instead of playing in sand.

    Half the park.

Located adjacent to Anza Elementary School, the park is enjoyed by many children on a daily basis. The park boasts two tennis courts that are for public use and also host lessons. They recently remodeled the picnic / barbecue area within the last year or so and it is much nicer. Perfect for a birthday party. The bathrooms are avoidable. They are not very clean and do not have stall doors the last time I went in there. I haven't been inside them for a while and for good reason. There are plenty of swings and slides and even a workout area. The classic favorites of the park are the submarine, saturn, and train that kids have enjoyed for a long time. For the Pokémon Go-ers, the corner with the park sign is a Poke Stop and there is another one right next to it at the school where the kindergarders get out. For Geocachers, there's one here! I won't say where though! The park is very dark at night at is not particularly inviting. It could use some new brighter lights.

Fond memories I've been going to this park ever since we moved into torrance (1998). Never too old to enjoy yourself there. There is a a good amount of things to do. As a child, I enjoyed the the slides and the merry go round (which no longer exists :/) there is a sandbox as well. The trees were meant to be climbed! At least, i thought so. As a teenager, I liked going to the swings with friends and having the longest conversations As an adult, there is a big grass field to play volleyball, soccer, frisbee, etc. There is a tennis court near the bathrooms too! (Btw, the bathrooms aren't the greatest) The place is good to have parties. My brother and i have had a couple of birthday parties there. You need to reserve the picnic area as early as possible. My dad would be there at 5AM to get the spot. 7AM is waaaaay too late. It will be gone by then if it's a saturday. There are no basketball courts, but the park is right next to anza elementary which a public school where there are basketball courts to use. You cannot use the restrooms there. Dogs are always welcome. Just please clean up after them! There is a man who goes there a lot and reads books. I've seen him a good amount of times growing up and he's completely harmless. He just goes under a nice shady tree and reads his book. Who wouldn't want to do that???

UPDATE 1: Review #10 2026-024…read more Since my decade old review, Charles H. Wilson Park is due for an update. Major Changes: 2005: Annenberg Tree House 2009: Fitness Zone 2012: Turf Training Facility 2018: Children's Playground & Splash Pad 2024: Community Sports Complex's Roller Rink 2025: Tennis Courts LED Lighting Current Project: It was announced in 01/2025 that 8 new dedicated, lighted, & ADA-accessible pickleball courts will be built near (north) the existing courts. Early 2026 completion expected. Amenities: * Amphitheater * Basketball Courts * Batting Cages * Electric Car Charging Stations (PlugShare) * Farmer's Market (Tuesdays & Saturdays) * Fitness Course 0.91-mi. * Fitness Zone * Futsal * Horseshoe Courts * Indoor Sports Center * Live Steamer Trains (1st Sunday, 3rd Saturday) * Paddle Tennis/Pickleball Courts * Picnic & BBQ Areas (bouncer accessible with permit) * Playground * Restrooms * Roller Hockey Rink * Sand Volleyball Court * Softball Diamonds * Splash Pad * Sports Center * Tennis Courts * Tree House Donated by The Annenberg Foundation, the 2.5K sq. ft. Tree House was designed by Treehouse Guys, LLC & is the 1st universally-accessible tree house in a CA public space. The "fresh air gym" includes kinetic exercise machines, intuitive adjustable resistance machines, & calisthenics station for body weight exercises. I love this outdoor gym but the OCD in me has issues with not spraying down (sanitizing) equipment after use which is common for indoor gyms & it gets really dusty/dirty particularly after raining. Batting cage operator Tyler Sports, Inc. helped turn the defunct skatepark into a 10K sq. ft. artificial training facility for futsal & baseball/softball fielding; there's 2 netted pitching tunnels & 2 turf sports fields. This helped minimize non-rule abiding soccer players from practicing on the tennis & pickleball courts, & damaging the nets. Futsal is a fast-paced, scaled down version of outdoor soccer. The children's playground was part of a citywide initiative to modernize aging play structures & swing to meet current safety standards. I love the intricate "Spherical Spider Web" rope-based climbing structure! There's a smaller rock climbing wall for the younger set or kids who prefer to be closer to the ground. The only iffy equipment is the Stand-Up Seesaw; I've seen some kids accidentally falling or intentionally crawling underneath the seesaw while in motion. Yikes! That same year a splash pad was added to replace the defunct pond (which I miss dearly... I loved our local ducks!), turning the community's eyesore into a spot to cool off during spring & summer, using recirculating water system to conserve water (yeah, that means don't drink the water!). L.A. Galaxy & TUDN partnered to refurbish the rink's floor surface with Sports Court Defense tiles that are designed to be a safer, shock-absorbing surface, & better support sports: roller hockey, roller derby, pickleball (6 courts), futsal (3 courts), etc. LED lighting was added to the tennis courts for reduced operating costs, improved visibility (that would be me for my old fart eyes), & energy efficiency. I officially tried pickleball for the 1st time this year at YEE Badge Day at PowerPlay Pickleball (refer to Review #953), & I'm hooked! So I am especially excited for these new lighted courts... woot, woot!! The farmer's market has grown so much that they expanded to the small lot west of the softball field nearest to Crenshaw Blvd.; most of the food vendors are located there in addition to the ones near Dee Hardison Sports Center. I met Mel while taking a pic of the horseshoe courts; he's registered with the City to maintain the courts & was doing some upkeep when he spotted me. Mel's so thoughtful & generous with his time... I learned Ted Allen horseshoes are the best (unique finger grips for consistent throws, expertly designed for balance), about the Flip or Turn style (he prefers turn) throws, differences between kid & adult horseshoes, court clay, etc. Ted broke many records to his 10 world championships as well as holding them, including 72 consecutive ringers -- wowza! He even demoed a couple of pitches for pics & hit 2 ringers... what a surprising moment for writing this update! Charles H. Wilson Park is a 44-acre family-friendly, recreational hub that truly has a l'il something for everyone!

This park is spacious. Has picnic tables, aquatic facilities, basketball court, pickel ball and a good outdoor stage presentation facility for events. Place fits over a 1000 people at this outdoor event venue. Bring your pop up tent and your fold up chairs to feel comfortable. With that said, my #1 gripe about this park, only two unisex toilets available! Who would put a 2 person bathroom with a cipher code that can accidentally lock. These two bathrooms is stationed like a miniature hut stationed by the entertainment area. Who ever engineered these bathrooms should be reprimanded. It was a dumb idea for cipher codes to be implemented. One bathroom was accidently locked with no one in there! Terrible idea. Over a 1000 people and only as two restrooms nearby! If you had to use the use restrooms.. you have to walk in the other side of the park where the picnic area is located. It is quite a walk! Walked or wait 30 minutes. Overall, its comfortable park minus the restroom situation.

There's a community garden here with free mulch. There's a basketball court as well. I noticed lots of folks doing tai chi here. I also noticed groups of nannies meeting up here with their kids. There's no sand, dirt or wood chips at the playground area. The bad: One of the four swings could've used WD40. It was very squeaky. There was a man on the bench by the playground alone with a book who looked to be video recording the playground. I wasn't sure if it was innocent and he was potentially just video chatting with someone and showing them where he was but I was suspicious that a man would come alone and choose a bench by the loud children's play area to read rather than sit at one of the many other benches further away for a quiet space to read. The interesting: There's plenty of street parking. The playground is flat.

There are also walking paths that are great for riding bikes and scooters. The play area is pretty small for such a large park but it has the basic essentials and the kids had fun. Probably wouldn't make it a point to try to go to this park, but a good choice if you're in the area. Hope you check it out and enjoy!
