THE GOOD: Dr. Clark and her NP are SUPER nice. Dr. Clark can be a woman of few words. You do need to probe. I usually have questions and am prepared so this doesn't bother me. I don't find her to be super proactive, though. Her NP is much more bubbly and forthcoming. The office is in a great location with decent parking. Nice waiting room. Nice staff. The rooms are well lit, clean, and have views so you won't be bored while you wait...and wait. THE BAD 1) Wait time. EGREGIOUS. We are usually quite early for our appointment because we come a long way and every single time we have come, it's taken over half an hour to be seen--this is beyond the appointment time, not inclusive. THEN, if they have to do anything, they'll leave for 20 minutes and then come back--I just know they squeezed another patient in during this time. My time matters too and I CANNOT with this. I meet my nanny there with our child and usually my husband comes too. This is three adults giving up most of an afternoon unnecessarily. I find it unconscionably rude. 2) Staffing. They are extremely short staffed. I didn't see a nurse the entire time I was there and, though we made an appointment with Dr. Clark, we were shuttled off onto her NP without even a by-your-leave. 3) Paperwork. My kids have allergies. They are on medications and require forms for school. I sent paperwork in June and had to follow up several times to get it by September when I was told it would be faxed within the week!!! That's really insane! 4) PHONE ETIQUETTE: No one EVER picks up the phone here and you will NEVER get a call back. I don't do ERs and fortunately have plenty of qualified medical professionals in my family, but if I call on a Friday and haven't gotten a call back by the next Wednesday, that's a problem. A call back to ask how the child is and if the situation was resolved is ALWAYS WARRANTED. 5) Prescriptions and refills. My goodness, if you leave a message about a refill, they won't call you back for a week! What if it's a life or death situation people?!? That was the outside of too much. This practice has a lot of work to do. There are a number of other nitpicky things I won't mention except to say that I had high hopes for the practice that have been dashed. I gave several chances, but I think we are back in the market for a new pediatrician.

At about 9:26 p.m., I called to ask if my child could be seen if we arrived within the next 15 minutes. The person I spoke to said yes, so we left right away. At 9:32 p.m., while we were already on the way, I received a call from PM Pediatrics asking how far away I was because the front desk receptionist said she was no longer taking any more patients. I told them I was five minutes away, and the person on the phone said that was fine. When we arrived at 9:37 p.m., the front desk receptionist refused to check us in, saying that no one had spoken to her when I called and that they were "at capacity." She told me there were three or four patients already in the back and that the X-ray room was in use, so she wasn't checking in any more patients. I'm not sure how they could've been at capacity when they have more than three or four treatment rooms. She also said that by the time my son was seen, it would be 10:00. I asked multiple times to speak with a manager or a doctor, and she repeatedly refused--saying, "I'm here." Eventually, she told me I could wait for the doctor to come out, but that the doctor was currently with other patients. I then asked for the doctor's name, and she refused to tell me--multiple times--saying, "I'm not going to tell you her name because I'm busy." I pointed out that she clearly knew the doctor's name and it wasn't like she needed to look it up and that instead of her going back and forth with me, she could've just told me the doctor's name. She then went to the security guard and told the security guard she wasn't going to go back and forth with me (go figure). I then asked the security guard if she could tell me the doctor's name, and she told me that the doctor would tell me her name when she came to talk to me. While waiting, I also mentioned that we had new insurance and asked if I could give her our updated insurance information. She told me, "one second," and then got up and walked to the back. She came out and got on the phone, ignoring me completely, and never offered to take the new information, even when I asked again if she wanted to process it while we waited for the doctor to come out. I'll admit I was frustrated, but I was not being belligerent. I was simply trying to understand why we couldn't be seen when I had confirmed over the phone that my child would be. The receptionist wasn't outright nasty, but she definitely had an attitude and handled the situation very poorly. After waiting another 10 minutes, I decided to leave. The security guard suggested I try the Greenbelt location, but I told her I would return the next morning instead. As I was leaving, the receptionist called out, "You don't have to return." I explained to the security guard that I had been told over the phone to bring my son there and that he would be seen, but apparently the receptionist "rules the roost" at that location and decides when they stop seeing patients. I've never had any issues at this PM Pediatrics until tonight, but this experience was extremely disappointing. It's unacceptable that a front desk receptionist can override what was confirmed by staff on the phone and refuse care to a child without clear communication, professionalism, or compassion. I truly hope management reviews this incident and addresses how end-of-day patient intake decisions are handled. Parents should be able to trust that when they're told their child can be seen, that promise will be honored.

Operations: Start counting the hours of your time that this practice will waste. 98% of the time when you call them, there is an automated message that just says "please call back later" and hangs up on you without being able to leave a message. If you choose any of the menu options where you can leave a message (e.g., billing department), the message becomes "this mailbox is not monitored, please call the main office number". I feel like I'm being punked. They also charge you $25 for calling the on-call service with more urgent questions. When we finally did switch to another practice, they only sent over half my son's records and I had to call back a thousand times through their ridiculous system once again. Medical care: At our son's 1-year appointment, we made our next appointment at the front desk which they made for when he was 18 months. We did not question this. When we came back at 18 months, we were chided by the medical staff for "missing his 15 month appointment and so he's behind on his vaccines, which is very dangerous in this time period of increased respiratory illnesses". We also asked at every visit if we could receive a COVID vaccine for him, and were told we'd be put on a wait list and it would be available by the next visit, but it never was. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Our son was failure to thrive, had an NG tube placed around three months, and a G tube at six months. While the tubes stabilized his weight, there was never a plan to get him off the tube, his oral eating stopped completely, and an oral aversion developed over the course of working with our health plan's feeding team. Our medical team told us that he would likely not be free from the tube until he was two or three years old. We found Thrive shortly after the G tube placement. For several months, Heidi patiently worked with us while we navigated insurance coverages and advocated for a different approach with our medical team. We wound up scheduling a remote wean with Thrive and worked with Jamie for feeding therapy. Both Jamie and Heidi have been incredibly patient, encouraging, generous with their time, and knowledgable about kids like our son. Over the months we were working with our medical team to set up the wean, our son had been willing to occasionally try table foods, but he went from being fully tube dependent to getting 100% of his calories by mouth in just 15 days. Our medical team said it was impossible, but we knew that if we just got out of his way and helped him rebuild his natural instincts to feel hunger and satisfy it with food, he would figure it out. But it still feels like a miracle it happened so fast! I'm shocked that there aren't more people out there practicing this kind of practical feeding therapy for tube-dependent kids. I'm sure that in 10 years, a model like this will be in every health system in the country. But for now, if you've got a tube-dependent kid and you know in your gut that he can eat -- give Thrive a call.

On top of the feeding issue, my son had many medical issues related to the syndrome he was born with. It was one of the toughest times in my life. I trusted Spectrum Pediatrics. But one of the owners lacked awareness, understanding and sympathy. She made up her mind that I was a bad mom and treated me as such. It was such a vulnerable time in my life. She judged and blamed me at a moment when I already felt so guilty that as a mom, I couldn't help my child. As it turned out, only months later "treatment" at SP, my son suffered bowel obstruction, and then doctors suddenly realized why my son wasn't eating. It turned out that he also had a similar issue with the bladder. As soon as my son was treated for constipation of the bladder and bowel, the condition started to resolve. I have never felt more miserable working with anyone/people in my life and deeply regret having taken my child to Spectrum Pediatrics.
