As it turns out, Dr. Evans is exactly what we needed. His bedside manner is incredibly sincere, compassionate, and understanding. He's a younger doctor which turns out to be a wonderful bonus because he knows the most current information regarding health and safety stats and research done around various topics that have come up in our visits. One of the things I love most is that he is very inquisitive and really dives in and takes his time to make sure he hears me out and has asked all questions that could exhaust all of the possibilities with any illness we've presented him with. He is so thorough and reassuring too. He spent more than 2 hours with us and then let me stay in the room to nurse for over an hour as well (on several occasions!). The staff is wonderfully warm and helpful. They get the door for me, help me carry my bag/car seat, guide me through paperwork with patience and kindness. I just love this office! PLUS, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy is just down a block and they do medicine in liquid suspension form for babies so that's SUPER convenient. I love this office and Dr. Evans is our hero. He figured out my daughter's silent reflux be being persistent and digging to find answers even when her symptoms were not typical. He went the extra mile to be sure and sent her to a specialist so she didn't have to continue to suffer. We left Walnut Creek Pediatrics to come see Dr. Evans on a friend's recommendation. I'm so glad we did. Summit Pediatrics is far and away better than Walnut Creek Pediatrics based on how they're run and how easy it is to get a hold of someone, get calls back, and be seen immediately. Plus, they treat you with gentle, knowing compassion at Summit Pediatrics - unlike Walnut Creek Pediatrics. I just can't say enough great things about thus wonderful doctor and practice. We are forever in their debt for their wonderful service to our family.

Our son is now 7 and after years of being told nothing was wrong by DR's - but pre-school and sitters had numerous challenges - we knew we needed a more specific diagnosis. Dr Berman did a full assessment and now we have a path forward, have had lots of support in how to work with the school productively to get his IEP in place and get him the services to support him. We keep records and go back once a year now and again, wonderful. Having a child with learning issues, some obvious and others not as much, it is amazing to have an advocate on your team. Also, he is very well respected and knows throughout the schools out in Contra Costa so it helps as he has relationships with them and sometimes can directly discuss to refine your childs program. It does take a team to raise a confident and supported child, especially with sensory or other learning issues and Dr Berman is a key member to have. And he is very funny and so sweet with kids - it is very much appreciated.

She always takes the time to listen and she has always been very thorough and prompt with responses over their messaging system. As a new Mom, you have a lot of questions, and she has always been very patient and understanding with all of mine. When I had an issue with something else in the office, she really took initiative to help me with my concerns and resolve the situation. So many "referral services" can only tell you about a doctor's credentials or what insurance they accept, like check boxes on a form. They give you no idea about whether the doctor is a good doctor or not. There is no check box on a form for "great personality" or "Good bedside manner." I am so thrilled that we finally found a great pediatrician that we can trust and feel comfortable with. I just don't think doctors like Dr. Birdsall exist anymore and that is why we feel so extremely fortunate to have found her. Our first visit with Dr. Birdsall was for our oldest son's school sports physical. I loved that she told us about herself and that she seemed genuinely interested in getting to know our family. I also noticed that she smiled and laughed a lot while interacting with my son. You can tell that she really loves her job and cares about her patients. My son really liked Dr. Birdsall too, and he didn't mind the examination and a shot. During our visit, I felt like I really got to know Dr. Birdsall and I found her to be a super genuine and open-minded person. Also, one time I called the office with a question and instead of my call being transferred to a nurse, it was transferred to Dr. Birdsall. I've never had a doctor take my calls before. That's normally fine because I know that doctors are busy but I am just so impressed by the personal service that Dr. Birdsall offers. The doctor's office is also really nice too. It is clean and very child friendly. Everyone we met in the office was very helpful and efficient. They know what they are doing! You don't find that everywhere. My son was born with a Life-threatening heart condition and was on full life support within his first 5 minutes of life. He had open heart surgery at 3 days. As a result of the heart defect, it caused him to have 7 other anomalies. Dr. Cortez has been with us every step of the way and helping to organize and lead my sons team of doctors. He has calmed our fears and frustrations time and time again. He has been an angel. Like any GOOD doctor he can run behind some time but he is worth the wait. He takes time out to hear your concerns and discuss ll possible options. When he does not have the answer he says so and then makes it a point to get the answers. After fifteen years and my sons 11 surgeries, he is still standing by to help our family. In addition, he has and excellent CNA Xenia, she does her best to return call and follow up on referrals in addition to delivering the best shot possible the patients. Finally, every subspecialist my son has had gives Dr. Cortez compliments on the way he cares for his patients. You can't go wrong if you choose Dr. Paul Cortez as your family pediatrician.

A Systemic Billing Nightmare Wrapped in a Pediatric Office…read more I want to preface this by stating that Dr. Paul Cortez, MD is a genuinely personable pediatrician who provides good clinical care to our kids. However, his medical expertise is completely overshadowed by the predatory, deceitful billing practices of his pediatrics office and the broader John Muir Health system. A well-child exam should be a stress-free milestone, not a traumatic, anxiety-inducing financial trap for parents. This Alamo Pediatrics clinic operates on a deeply ingrained culture of surprise billing. If you ask even a single question about your child's development, they will immediately unbundle the visit and slap you with steep diagnostic charges. During our most recent well-child visits, we brought our sons in expecting standard, ACA-mandated preventative care. Instead, weeks later, we were hit with surprise bills. The clinic purposefully unbundled routine pure-tone hearing screens and submitted them as standalone diagnostic tests under CPT code 92551. By deliberately withholding the required preventative modifier, they forced our insurance, Aetna, to kick the charges straight to our family deductible. This is not an isolated "clerical error" - this exact same billing nightmare happened to us last year, costing us three months of endless phone tag to fix. Given how systemic this is year after year, I am absolutely sure his practice manager is complicit in this defensive revenue-generating strategy. When you try to resolve these issues, the front desk completely washes their hands of it and punts you to the John Muir central billing department, which operates like a black hole of unreturned voicemails and hour-long hold times. When I finally cornered a billing representative named Karen, she aggressively tried to gaslight me, claiming a standard pediatric hearing check is a "diagnostic" test. It wasn't until I physically conferenced in an Aetna representative on a three-way call and had to yell over her pushback that they backed down and agreed to recode the visits. Yet, they even managed to completely botch the correction. For one of my sons, their incompetent billing department submitted the corrected claim by billing the exact same hearing test three separate times on a single invoice and STILL forgot to attach the preventative modifier. A doctor's office should be a trustworthy partner in your child's health, not a bureaucratic adversary that weaponizes medical coding to nickel and dime families. Save yourself the immense administrative trauma and find a pediatric practice that actually knows how to bill preventative care accurately and honestly.

He was present during our son's surgeries and was a strong advocate for him.  He has a way about him that is calming to all of us.  When our son was in a bad mental space preceding his 2nd surgery, it was Howard who spent an hour with him, was able to get through to him and got him ready to face what was ahead.  He was a lifesaver.   Howard has always been available to us for anything.  Even now when we have been transferred to adult cardiology,  Howard has been with us through the transition.  He has continued to spend time with our son in order to help guide his next decisions.  Howard is a special man.  He has so much experience and knowledge.  He listens and truly cares.
