Time went by and the time never really presented itself... A lunch with Yelp Elite Mohamade provided the perfect excuse to head down and check it out. This Syrian themed gem isn't huge, but the warm welcome will make you feel like the most important customer of the day. I popped in and initially grabbed a table by the big glass windows and ordered a Moroccan Mint Tea whilst I waited for my lunch partner to arrive. As you can see from my photos, this was something really special. Packed full of fresh mint leaves and served with a sugar stirrer, I felt whisked away to a land of hot, dusty streets and endless sunshine. After I had finished, I moved to the snug at the back of the venue to get a bit of work done. This area provides sofa style seating and big squishy pillows, perfect to chill out in of a day or an evening (the venue is open until 8pm most days). Once Mo had arrived, we moved to a larger table area back out the front and ordered more drinks and some food. I opted for the Damascena tea (a black tea, this time) and three Tahini lamb pastries, alongside a lamb soup. I couldn't get over the prices. The soup was around £2.15 and the pastries were 95p each (although there was a deal to buy three). All the food was tasty, warming and fresh; perfect to chase the cold wintry chill away. I ended up spending a good 4 hours in this venue and never once felt ill at ease or rushed. This place would be great for a catch up with friends, a date or a lunch in the week. I WILL be back, it's just a matter of how soon I can make it... Highly recommended.

It's not particularly big and is roughly split into two halfs, one the bar area with a few high bar stools and the other with tables for approx 20 people prepared for food service. On both occasions we have been pleasantly surprised by waitresses bringing out free food samples from the kitchen. Infact, all the staff seem friendly and helpful, especially when asked for advice on what to choose! The bar quickly fills up however, so by 6pm I was already happy to leave to get some air! I thought the tv at the back seemed a little out of place with the clientele/ambiance of the place. Nevertheless I would go back again to perhaps try the food menu this time:)

It's a bit more pricey than some of the other restaurants in Harborne but not outrageous, and the service and food are absolutely incredible. The staff are very welcoming and attentive but not overbearing. Both times walking in someone immediately offered to take my coat, and even though we had bookings (once with a group of 4 and once as a couple) we were given a choice of seating. The menu is seasonal and changes, but the deep fried goat's cheese as a starter was fantastic, as was the mozzarella filled gnocchi in a pomodoro sauce. My husband ordered an asparagus-stuffed chicken breast that he said was cooked perfectly, served with a generous side of really delicious sautéed potatoes (which I deviously stole from his plate throughout the evening). It's just really elegant, delicious, Italian food that seems much more 'authentic' than any other Italian place I've tried in Birmingham. The only thing I've been disappointed with is the antipasto. It was basically a large plate of lettuce with an unexpectedly small amount of cured meats and an olive or two- I've had much better antipasto platters elsewhere. Monday evening at 7pm and the ground floor was full, but our party of 7 was seated comfortably upstairs - in fact we almost had it to ourselves. I liked the intimate feel but this means that booking is a must! The two members of staff that served us were really attentive and polite. They made a big fuss of the hero of the group who had just recieved his Doctorate which was a really nice personal touch. A service charge of 10% is added to groups of six or more which is a practice I normally dislike although in this instance it was deserved. Food wise everyone left with full bellies and a satisfied appetite. For myself as a vegatarian there is always a limited choice, although they offer to exchange the meat in some of the pasta dishes for veggie options so I was more than content. Our mixed bruschetta starter was a safe option but tasty and introduced me to baked garlic, I ate the whole bulb! I had a delicous pasta dish for my main with peas, pistachio nuts and pecorino, there should of been cured pork too but I had asapargus. Best pasta I've eaten since Italy. Can't wait to go back and will be taking advantage of their early dining menu (18:00 - 19:30) where you can have three courses for £15.50.

Arigato Tonkatsu…read more Brilliant place with great customer service. On the old site as ekachai, the place is welcomed with friendly staff introducing the dishes to me. As it's the opening day, they only had limited stocks of ramen dishes. Fortunately the Tonkatsu was available and the broth didn't disappoint a hot thick 18 hours simmered broth added a powerful porky flavour, which was unique to its brand. The pork belly had a rich creamy texture which added flavour to the broth the longer you left it in it. The homemade noodles were infused with soy and miso, so it definitely added a salty taste which compliments the broth. The gyozas were very good with a light crispy texture coating, it complimented well with Tonkatsus own chilli oil. The chicken Karaage sadly didn't do too much justice and unfortunately was a little bit dry, therefore I would t recommend. Tonkatsu has made itself a marker for a ramen place and will hold on this title as long as it remains. I'm coming again soon!

Honestly I would rate the food itself 3 stars, but we had a nice time and the service was good. However if looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, I would recommend to dine elsewhere. The restaurant is split into two sections across two floors: Yin (lower) and Yang (upper). Yin is the main part of the restaurant with artificial cherry blossoms and paintings. Yang has more of a classy feel. We sat at a booth by the cherry blossoms in Yin, which has lighting that poses a challenge for photos. We opted in for the Modern Sharing Tasting Menu priced at £70 per person. Over the timespan of 2.5 hours, three waves of courses were served. I included the regular prices from the à la carte menu. Assuming the portions were the same, the total was £148.45 compared to £140 for the two of us, so not a bad deal to sample a variety. Wave One: two Small Plates dishes ----- Tuna Sashimi Wontons: sesame, soy and avocado (£12.50). The fish was fresh and the shell was crisp, but the sauce was too heavy. ----- 1/2 Aromatic Duck Pancakes: Szechuan, cucumber and spring onion (£26). Duck was overcooked and dry. Accompaniments were standard. ----- Wave Two: two Large Plates and two Rice, Noodles and Vegetables dishes ----- Caramel Soy Aged Beef Fillet: UK premium aged beef, shiitake, ginger and asparagus (7oz for £39). Cook of the beef was adequate, although rather tough to chew. ----- Char Siu Honey Glazed Monkfish: morning glory, caramel orange and pickled cucumber (£33.95). An interesting choice of meat to marinate in char siu sauce. Fish was not juicy but it was good. ----- Tenderstem Broccoli: black sesame and truffle (£8). Vegetables were soft, although the black sesame paste was a bit odd. ----- Duck Egg and Chinese Sausage Fried Rice (£8). A bit oily but otherwise standard fried rice. ----- Wave Three: two Dessert dishes ----- Cherry Blossom: white chocolate, cherry and candyfloss (£11.50). Another dish that is presented with fog. The server allowed the request to swap this with the Banana Fritters (£9) at no extra charge. The chocolate tree and base was rich and smooth. ----- White Chocolate Dragon Egg: coconut, passionfruit and mango (£9.50). We liked the presentation of the dragon egg. Dessert itself was fruity and tasty. ----- In addition, two drinks were ordered. ----- Eastern Dragon: 135 East Gin, raspberry and apple (£18). Pricey but I quite liked the drink, which was sweet and light on alcohol. It also came served in a decorative, lit box a full of fog. ----- Hidden Dragon: mint, ginger and agave (£6). ----- Our reservation was for 6 PM on a Wednesday, and were easily seated when arriving an hour early as the restaurant was empty. Tables quickly filled shortly after but the restaurant has ample seating to accommodate walk-ins. A bottle of sparkling water costs £4.50 and a 10% service charge is added to the bill. The recommended dress code is smart casual, but I did spot people wearing plain solid-colored shirts.
