The Sutton Park location is the appeal (you approach from Boldmere Gate), but it could also be that which spoils things.
The dining room offers a sweeping view of Powells Pool. It's just that while the biggest of Sutton Park's seven pools, it comes off as the most municipal. Blackroot and Bracebridge are nicer and feel more natural... and guess what - both of those have restaurants bordering them.
It's not the end of the world though. It's a spacious setting, larger and airier than you'd think for essentially a slightly posh grill. Breakfast is recommended and works better with the setting. Calling ahead is advised for a table at the window.
What also impresses is the bar. Despite its steak-and-burger set-up, it seems to work almost as a stand-alone venue, a world away from mustard and ketchup. Visiting the venue just for a drink isn't the worst idea.
On two or three visits, protocol has not, however, always been apparent. A sign encourages patrons to wait to be seated. And yet you wait and no one appears. So in frustration, food plans are ditched for a drink, or, frankly, it's the 180-degree about-turn and onto somewhere happier to see you. It's happened one too many times to be a coincidence. read more
