This pub vies with The Duke Inn and The Station for the title of best boozer in central Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.
Its charms may not be as immediately obvious, but it will tick the boxes of anyone looking for a traditional pub where the affordability has not been compromised by soulless chain branding. It is the kind of pub you remember, and likely miss.
While the food may be on the kind of menu you've seen scores of times before, and the bandit may be joined by a quiz machine and even, alas, an arcade-style grab claw gizmo, it is the bar which keeps people coming back.
Here, drinkers can get a surprising amount of change out of £3, can set their watch by tradesmen coming in at 5pm and expect to see a nowadays all-too-rare evening mix of pensioners, middle-aged couples and lads in their 20s with their girlfriends; each group respectful of each other. It all makes for a vaguely bygone vibe, particularly heady on match days when sheer numbers makes shoulder-rubbing and mutually-beneficial person-to-person pint-passing the norm. These pubs are a dying breed, but this one bucks the trend with its head held high; the good service as likely as a wink from a bloke who doesn't know your name, but recognises your face. And to top it off, a well-known English lager goes down with the character of a supposedly more sophisticated continental brew. Those pipes are being looked after.
