Many are rough and rowdy, and some are known to have drug problems. But not this place. This is genuinely a great place to hang out and have a drink and watch a match if that is what you fancy. Even when it is crowded, people are polite and respectful of each other. I believe this comes from the top, as I've started to come more often and been able to meet the staff, I can see why this place as the culture it does. This is my number one place to come for a drink and a match, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The beer garden is pretty good and it is a great place to be to have a pint especially when the sun it out. The inside of the pub is very spacious. During the midday the pub is usually quiet but come the evenings it is jam packed mainly on Fridays and Saturdays. There are plenty of screens in the pub that will show live sports. The Tennis Courts certainly offer a range of food ranging from chicken, steak, king size combos, burgers as well as Pub Favourites. The one thing I have tried at the pub is Lemon and Pepper Chicken. One word to sum it up - Beautiful. The chicken was succulent, the lemon and pepper was served with seasoned chips, peas and a half grilled tomato. A top class dish and I would go back to The Tennis Courts pub just for that.

One thing I would say is that they charge for parking with a token bought at the bar, which you will get a £1 refund for if you buy food. This seems like a local pub for local people to me, one that includes a hall of shame photograph wall that makes me sad we can't upload pictures with people in it. The interior has been painstakingly restored to its original charm. Decor highlights include display cases of beer bottles from the early 1900s, a wood fireplace, cosy seating nooks with leather cushions, and the outdoor patio. Because this is a neighborhood pub, families come in throughout the day to enjoy a refreshing pint and most know the servers by name. It's a bit like being on the set of Cheers (American TV show from the 1980s). I went here with Seth S. and took my laptop with some reading. While the Tap doesn't have wifi, seating is comfortable and atmosphere is conducive to relaxing. We stayed for a few hours, enjoying a few pints of cider and then ordered two sides of chips when the kitchen opened at 5pm. The chips were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The portions are HUGE. We could have easily split one side, which was served up in a pasta bowl. The staff were very welcoming and made us feel right at home. I'll definitely be coming here often.

The Boldmere Tap has refurbished the previous Old Cork & Bottle into a homely neighborhood pub that is one of the most welcoming in Sutton Coldfield. Joule's is a craft brewery that jump-started a defunct 19th century brand (the first ever trademark in England) in the early 2000's that had been purchased by one of the big macro-breweries. The brewery is an easy one hour journey from Birmingham, and centers on crafting real ale with the local spring waters of Shropshire. The focus on the Joule's brewing legacy has led to the creation of some very well done ales and lagers. The Boldmere Tap is the first pub in Birmingham to be under the Joule's umbrella, and features their full line of beers on tap. I recently dropped by one afternoon with one of my mates to see what the brewery had to offer. I have previously tried their pale ale at a pub in city centre, and was excited to see the other featured beers. Joule's has four main beers in their stable, which are complemented by seasonal offerings. The mains are their flagship Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk (a malty bitter ale), Joule's Blond (nice and citrus forward), and Green Monkey (their lager). Their winter seasonal, Old No. 6, is a dark ale. All of the brews are available in half or pull pint pours (a half of the Slumbering Monk is only £1.50). If you aren't in the mood for Joule's taps, the pub also provides more standard fare, including Guinness. All of this is on top of their food menu. The kitchen opens at 10AM, where you can start the day off right with a full English Breakfast for £4.95. The main courses at dinner average around £8, with fish and chips at £7.95. For vegetarians, there are four main courses to choose from, including broccoli cheese bake, mushroom stroganoff, vegetable lasagna, and a bean burger, all for £7.25 or less. The neighborhood feeling that the Boldmere Tap elicits is woven into the very fabric of the building. The pub is decorated with bric a brac of old photos, vintage beer bottles, and a railway sign from the Chester Road station before the branding was refreshed by London Midland. On a cold January afternoon, a stove fire roared near the entrance, heating up the front room. Events are held throughout the week, with a quiz night on Mondays at 9PM and open mic nights on Wednesday. The Boldmere neighborhood, and Birmingham as a whole, are lucky that the Boldmere Tap has been chosen as the flagship Joule's pub for the area. The pub gets all of the benefits that come from being affiliated with a craft brewery, while still maintaining a very old school English pub charm that is increasingly lacking in the city.

When they first started they were a bit ropey on food, burger buns often a little stale, but since they changed owners & since the pandemic the food's really improved - and they have a few decent cask ales on too, usually a couple of guest beers to choose from. So if you like good honest pub grub & don't mind a slightly run down working class kind of pub with loads of football on screens everywhere, it's a good value place to take the family. Not a posh place putting on airs or anything but a good pub with great burgers and steaks that they'll actually cook how you ask them to.

(lose one star.) Whilst we waited for our food we heard the first server tell someone behind us that the delay was due to a lack of steak knives but no one advised us that there was an issue. (lose another star.) When the main course appeared they insisted that my brothers food had been ordered without chips and only a salad. But since he doesn't eat salad we were worried we had someone else's. They brought us the missing portion of chips in an extra bowl without any fuss. (lose yet another star.) I didn't see what tea's were available and when I asked at the counter I was told to look at a sign that was 15-20 foot away. I had to take 4 steps towards it to get a proper look. I had given my table number but no suggestion was given if I was to wait for my tea to be prepared or to return to my seat. Then I couldn't get on the WIFI.. even though it claimed a good signal. Did it think all the people who had visited and logged on were still there?? Customer Service is KEY!! Update... They've just earned a star back as they tweeted me about the poor wifi issue..

The reviews are generally pretty decent, although a little mixed, so it looked a good should. Inside the décor is really relaxed with lots of shabby chic and exposed wood, pleasant and with plenty of space to sit. Its apparently part of a chain of lounges situated throughout the country, but I cant say I have ever come across one. Each lounge has a different name (i.e. Ocho, Trago, Verdo) so perhaps its that it isn't immediately obvious (or im not very observant). The food menu is extensive. This often worries me, because getting such a wide range of food spot on is always going to be pretty difficult, and in this case it proved to be an issue. The burger was served on a stale bun and was generally uninspiring and the Chicken and Avocado panini was served with an avocado sauce rather than fresh. The chicken was also reminiscent or packaged stuff from the supermarket. The portions were a little stingy too. So the food wasn't great, but with the general vibe of the place, the service and the comprehensive drinks menu, this place is a pretty good catch all type of bar/cafe. I wouldn't advise travelling to go here, but I don't think there's anywhere local doing anything similar at the moment.
