Fish and chips - great chips, rest so-so
    Dave C.

I'm in two minds about this place. On the one hand I love that's been restored without too many nods to fashion. On the other, despite great service, the beer and food isn't quite there. The vibe and decor is definitely towards the 'old man's pub' end of things, but there are none to be seen (at least on my visit), rather it's occupied by a range of office types and hipsters of the distinctly non-old variety. I was in there around 3.45 on a Tuesday so you'd sort of expect the dead zone given location, but there were several people in and more enjoying the sun outside. I ordered fish and chips, with peas. Peas were mushy and not nice, fish decent enough but overtly greasy batter so clearly been fried more than once. Chips were perhaps the 'best in brum'. Chips need to be made from proper spuds, hand or machine sliced, and fried to within a nip of brown. These were! The beer was nice enough - a good strong porter style, but not the bee's danglies! Overall, a decent mid-range. I'd go in again because the prices are less gastro, more classic local, and it's a nice enough place. There're a couple of books showing photo's of the place getting done up. It doesn't seem like a huge amount was spent, more a slap and tickle, but I guess the originality is part of the charm!

I'm so pleased to see this dead pub bought back to life! The Woodman is a protected building near the new Eastside Park, Millenium Point and Parkside University building. It's been boarded up for a long time, but I met a friend there last week for a check out and catch up. Firstly, it's been redecorated. Still in an "Old man pub style", but clean, fresh and light. The seats are wooden stools and tables and the beer pumps are shiny and brass. On our visit, I tried a beer that had been bought in as a guest ale from a local brewery. It was pleasing to see a choice of 3/4 ales, as well as European Lagers and a full bar of spirits. A pint, a half and a cola set me back £5.55. Not too bad, I thought! There seemed to be a mixed clientele of students, people who worked at the venues nearby and buisnessy people having meetings. The bar staff were really friendly and helpful, guiding us through the choices on offer and their new menu looks quite varied and good value. Over summer, I imagine they will put out chairs onto Eastside Park, so it'll be a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the evening sun. Over winter, it's a cosy well stocked and reasonably priced bar. Worth checking out if you're in the area, but not worth trekking through the whole city for a pint.

A much needed addition to the Millennium point area. Prior to The Woodman being open, there wasn't really any (nice) pubs nearby, you'd have to head to Digbeth or back into the central city area. Where this pub excels is it's ales. Great selection on tap which changes regularly. I'm told the food is pretty decent, though I'm yet to try. I've had many a pint in their beer "garden", the pub is surrounded by Eastside City Park so you can stand outside, in the sun and not have cars going by a people rushing past with things to do. It's a nice chilled atmosphere. Especially when the fountains are on. There is seating too which is great. It works as a nice pitstop on your way to Digbeth or a watering hole pre/post-event at Millennium Point or BCU's Parkside campus or on a sunny day when you head to the park and fancy a refreshing beer.

Completely out-of-place in the modern Curzon Street, but right at home next to the old Birmingham Curzon Station.

Another little gem of Birmingham. It's a retro freehouse that serves funny fizzy things and awesome food. A burger and a pint will set you back less than a tenner so it's a lovely little treat if you're looking for somewhere for lunch. The bar staff were also able to accommodate my rather odd request of "can you do me a pint of diet coke, but put a rum in it please" - I'm here for the taste and the chat, not the fuzzy head, you know - so I would happily put this place back on my to-do list the next time I need to escape the hubbub and step back 100 years or so. Free wifi lets you be antisocial/gets work done (delete as applicable) and the password is written on the huge blackboard as soon as you go in. Toilets are out the back. In Millennium Point but can only find sugary cake and expensive coffee? Yep - this is where this place comes in nicely. Sit down with a pint of fruit lager and remind yourself how lucky you are to be in Birmingham.

Sadly 78 seems more of a venue for hire whilst operating as a bar. They hold monthly networking events for the Custard Factory's resident creatives but lacks the impact of its former life. I recently ate there after attending the Vintage Fair at the Old LIbrary and considering how busy the Custard Factory and the Fair was the bar was very quiet. To be fair this may in part be down to it's distinct lack of openness to it's appearance as you approach the venue. It's dark depths make you question whether the door will open. Once inside these dark depths continued into the Ladies toilets where you questioned whether it was an aesthetic decision to create intimacy or just a few bulbs had gone. The comfy booths had a host of chairs surrounding them making you wonder if they were reserved or closed off, but I just shuffled my way through them. We had good table service and the menu had a range of salads, burgers and general pub food including offers. It wasn't a great lunch experience and the venue lacked an atmosphere for a sunny, busy saturday in Brum. A bit too quiet and lacking in identity. Hopefully it's just finding it's feet.

A bit far from the pub route of Digbeth, this bar usually held a lot of interesting events during the week but on a Sunday afternoon it seemed to be a very relaxing ambient. Pints are relatively cheap there and the football can be watched from a very comfy seat while you grab a bite. The food is nice as well. The usual 2 for £ 10 meal deals can be chosen from a good selection of burgers, fish & chips or pizzas. I wouldn't chose this bar to drink regularly among other good ones in Digbeth but I certainly will be back there if I am attending some event at Custard Factory, especially if I need to relax and calm down for some minutes during a very busy day.

The club now finds home on the emerging side of Digbeth, where many other venues establish hiding places from the usual taxi drop offs. In other words, be prepared to explain to taxi drivers exactly how to get here before starting off, otherwise you'll be driving around the back streets of Digbeth for hours! The club itself looks like a Tardis in the form of a small house from the roadside. But in fact, the venue is home to three large rooms. The basement, the main room and the newly extended rooftop. Nights on the rooftop are the perfect events for smokers, as they don't have to leave their position or miss out on any of the music. There is also food served on the roof, which to me is ingenious. Many times I have had to walk miles after a club night, in hope to find an open takeaway. But at PST, you don't have to go anywhere. To me, PST is Birmingham's defining reggae club, and holds a reggae and dub night every Thursday on the roof. These nights are always packed full of exceptionally friendly people, and the whole ethos behind the venue name People Stand Together (PST) also reflects this welcoming atmosphere perfectly. You really will struggle not to fit in here, and if you enjoy the sounds of underground music, then PST is definitely the venue to be at. I personally enjoyed a psychedelic trance night in the main room called Kanyini, which transported me back to what I'd except the 90s dance club scene to be like. Fluorescent walls, glow sticks and adrenalin driving beats!

Everyone I have ever come across there are some of the soundest, wildest and most chilled people I have ever met, they are enjoying life to the full, with some cool beverages, the occasional salt-fish patty and the finest music. I have witnessed a pop-up break dancing crew on one of the funk nights when there was a lot of 'old-skool' break being mixed, I did attempt to participate and whipped out my best wild, arm-flailing two-step. Once I realised I had just swiftly exhausted my whole dancing resume whilst they were still spinning on their heads, I decided to retire to the rooftop yard and lay-low for a while to avoid embarrassing myself any more. The rooftop yard just adds to PST's supremacy as a venue - the party goes on up there too when the skies are clear. PST is a venue that's on another plane in comparison to these big establishments - it's got character, authenticity and a crowd unlike any other. Get to PST and revel in the best vibes that Birmingham has to offer.

This pub is located in Deritend/Digbeth and has the look and feel perfect for Brum's Irish Quarter. It has a real sense of place and history, as should any pub with its own theme song (seriously, check it out on youtube). The landlord John has built a reputation as a friendly face of the pub and representative of the neighbourhood. In a sea of bars and gastropubs serving £12 'craft' cocktails, the Spotted Dog serves as a landmark of sanity. The pub has a charmingly worn interior that is ridiculously clean for a boozer in Digbeth. Table tops adorned with candles sit inside, while a side door through the lounge exits onto what is probably the best covered garden in the whole of Brum. The drinks menu is simple yet satisfying. You'll find some of the usual suspects like Guiness on draft in addition to several rotating real ales. Liquor covers a breadth of options, with regular specials. On jazz night (Tuesday), Bushmills Irish Whiskey can be had for a pound and certain ales for £2.50. Even on a normal night, The Spotted Dog is one of the best values in Birmingham. The pub opens at 5PM most nights (sometimes later in the winter). Crisps are offered as the only snack, so you'll want to plan for food accordingly. The customer service is above expectations. A friend and I stopped in one evening right as the pub opened to sip some whiskey. As the first and only customers for over an hour, John shared with us some special Polish vodka a personal friend had brought to him. One of his bartenders asked what music to put on over the sound system and his reply was 'anything you want, as long as it's Bo Diddley'. These types of charmingly quaint memories are what makes The Spotted Dog so special for me. If you are in search of a proper Irish pub experience, look no further than The Spotted Dog.
