They put new asphalt in our driveway and resealed it three weeks ago now and it is all still soft and cannot be driven upon. They came and tore it all out once after the first install, but the new asphalt is also not getting hard. It becomes semi-hard when the weather is cloudy and the temperature is cool, but when it is hot and sunny the asphalt becomes gooey and tar-like. The attached picture shows what happens when you drive on it when it is hot and gooey even weeks after the initial install.
There is no time in sight when we will be able to get our vehicles back onto the driveway and off of the street. When we load and unload children and groceries, we are currently having to cross a large ditch in front of our home. The inconvenience in all of this is unreal. Our driveway wraps around our entire home, so if the weather is hot and sunny and a child walks to the backyard across the driveway, tar eventually gets in the house from their shoes and sometimes barefeet. There is literally tar everywhere in our yard and home at this point.
We have a consultant scheduled to come out and take samples of whatever material Roanoke Star Paving installed on our driveway. It cannot be real pavement or it would have obviously gotten hard by now. But the owner says it is OK to drive on because hot asphalt cures within 24 hours.
They originally bid our work back in October and told us the job would be finished within a few weeks. They postponed about 20 times, and finally showed up in late May.
This is all going to end in court unfortunately and we are going to have someone else come and tear all of this out as soon as we can so we can use our driveway again and get this sloppy tar out of our lives.
I am a Hokie getting a PhD in the construction Dept. at VA Tech and I do not recommend using this company for your asphalt paving needs. read more
