I've had such a great experience here. The office is clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed, with calming music and beautiful artwork that makes it feel welcoming right away. The front desk attendant is kind and easy to work with, and Dr. Wiczer is warm, attentive, and genuinely cares about her patients. One thing I really appreciate is how easy it is to get in touch with the office, they always answer the phone, and they're incredibly accommodating with same-day visits when I need to be seen quickly. Parking is also a huge plus. There's plenty of it, it's free, and it's right by the office, which makes everything feel easy and convenient. The location in downtown Bethesda is great as well. They accept Maryland Medicaid, which makes care accessible, and overall the whole team is welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend, 10/10 experience. read more

I had an 8:15 AM appointment today, arrived at 8 AM and no one was at the office. I waited in the pouring rain for 15 minutes, called the office several time and called Dr. Wiczer directly and got no answer. Would not recommend this dentist-- extremely unprofessional and completely wasted an hour of my morning. read more

I don't want to get into specifics since I'm worried about retaliation, and her office still has all my records from my years of horrible care that I need transferred to my new dental office. I think that should say enough about the experience I've had with this "Doctor." I've been bled dry by this practice, up-charged at every turn, fraudulently billed, operated on against my consent, and for all of this my teeth are still in horrible shape. I wish I had gone to any other dentist, now I'm stuck with a 5 year complete dental overhaul plan from a new practice, including 3 years of braces and double jaw surgery. It is always a torturous, soul-crushing experience coming here. Roanne never starts on time. She called me "desperate" because I didn't want to pay for a $1000 night guard. She is so awkward! Then she said I needed a crown and would give me two options, but "knows I can't afford the second one." Which was $2200 for a chipped tooth. I read her review for another chipped tooth that she messed up and I was like no way. Because every time she puts in a filling, she knocks the tooth next to it out of place so it messes up my bite. My teeth felt fine before coming to her and now it hurts to bite down. Then, she stabbed my gums with a needle without warning me and said she "thought you knew because I asked for a syringe." No, you were talking to someone else! She puts a mask over my eyes and I'm literally crying under the mask from the pain. While the hygenist was cleaning my teeth, the staff comes in and says that Roanne needs to see her. Poor Shiva was like, I'm busy cleaning a patient's teeth, can she wait? I only come here because it's approved from my provider. If my provider would let me go anywhere else in Maryland, I would. I hate coming here. Update: my provider is letting me switch dentists, yay! I was not informed of this when I made follow-up appointment but was charged me a $75 cancelation fee for refusing treatment. Thankfully, I never let her got anywhere near my teeth. I've been going to Dr. Wiczer for about 10 years. She has always been helpful, with good advice and fixing long term crowns and fillings. A long time ago, she recommended a night guard to prevent further deterioration. I thought it expensive. Well, thousands of dollars and multiple broken old fillings and crowns later, during Covid, I finally got the night guard. What a difference it makes, I should have listened. Her office is friendly and gives nice reminder phone calls for those cleaning appts you make 3 months in advance and tend to forget. She takes all kinds of insurance, has free parking and has a multilingual staff. read more

The office is shabby, the staff are poorly trained. The administrator left her door open right outside of where was seated, and was in a yelling argument with a patient on the phone. The dentist spent only 2 minutes with me and announced I needed a nightguard, which another dentist stated wasn't true. She wasn't careful and had no bedside manner. One visit was enough. Speaking from the point of view of an individual with a lot of experience with good dentists--I can say that I've never never been treated by one as skilled and compassionate as Dr. Wiczer. She not only gives the impression of having been the smartest girl in her class but also the kindest. She is earnest, patient and careful--especially not to inflict pain. Dr. Wiczer's assistants/colleagues are also highly competent and friendly. The office is well run--helpful with insurance claims. I wish I had read the reviews first! Huge mistake! I visited Dr. Wiczer's office twice. The first time, I had a cleaning and x-rays and was told that I grind my teeth and need a nightguard. I've never been told that by other dentists, so I declined, but I scheduled a follow-up for a week later because I had lost a filling and needed it replaced. I knew that prior to the visit, so it wasn't a surprise. However, prior to my next visit, the office called to cancel my appointment, and when I called multiple times to reschedule, they never returned my call. Fast forward six months to the next cleaning I had scheduled... I called a week out and explained that I still needed a filling and asked if it could be done after my cleaning. They agreed, but when I showed up for my appointment, Shiba completed the cleaning and told me that I was also having two fillings instead of one and being fitted for a nightguard that I had never agreed to. Shiba then proceeded to scrape my gums until they bled and tried to somehow use my bleeding gums as evidence that a nightguard was necessary. They were bleeding all along the gumline because she scraped them there with a sharp metal object! Next, she recommended Invisalign ($4,000) and kept saying that it was necessary to get my teeth back to "normal." I had braces in middle school, and they're still almost perfectly straight, so I declined, and she typed in my notes "recommended Invisalign / patient can't afford." That's pretty insulting since it's an unnecessary treatment that I declined. After that, I moved into Dr. Wiczer's chair for my filling. She came, shot both sides of my mouth, not just one, with novocaine and said she'd be back in ten minutes. While I waited, a woman from the front desk came and showed me a bill for $1,250 dollars for an extra filling that I didn't need ($350), a nightguard I didn't agree to ($500), and an overcharge of roughly four times what one filling should have cost ($400) according to my insurance company. I went in for a cleaning covered by my insurance and one filling that should have cost between $45 and $115 dollars according to my insurance company. They tried to upsell me $5,250 worth of almost entirely unnecessary treatment, and it seems like everyone in the office is in on the scam. read more

I just moved to the area, and needed a new dentist, this office had some good reviews, so I tried to call to set up an appointment Disappointment 1) The Receptionists The first time I call, a rushed-sounding guy picks up the phone, takes my information then tells me he'll call me back. Fine, sure. Two days later, still no return call. I call again, this time another chick answers, and promptly sets up an appointment, great. Disappointment 2) The Wait I arrive 20 minutes early to fill out the paperwork. 45 minutes wait later, the receptionist makes some makes some vague motions and says I need to go around the corner, down stairs and I would see a sign for "chestnut street" and "dentist", so i wander outside, but no chestnut street, and no stairs to be found. So after looking around in the freezing weather for 5 minutes, i go back inside to get better directions, and end up asking some other dental person where the heck I'm supposed to go, and she gestures down a hallway (inside) where there are some spiral stairs. Disappointment 3) The Wait, part 2 I make it downstairs, and am ushered into YET ANOTHER waiting room. 20 minutes there and I'm finally in a chair. Yes folks, prepare yourself to sit for AN HOUR before being seen. Disappointment 4) The Dentist Dr. Wiczer didn't spend more than 30 seconds looking at my teeth. After running her probe over my teeth for a grand total of 30 seconds, and says i grind my teeth. That's it, no suggestions for mouth guards, just that i grind a lot, which I had never heard before. She peeks at my x rays, says that I "really should stay with her" for the next couple years as my big fillings will likely give out. The quotes is the same phrase I heard her tell some other person while i was waiting in the first waiting room. Clearly she's desperate to keep clientele. As she should be, it was terrible. Disappointment 4) The Surprise Charges Seeing as this was my first appointment with this dentist, I didn't know what the cleaning regime entailed, so when the hygienist said he'd be applying a fluoride treatment, I didn't question. Clearly a novice error. The white goo that took 5 minutes to slap on cost $40. Kinda ridiculous to not mention, IMHO. Summary: I'm changing dentists. read more

I had my normal 6-month cleaning this morning at Dr. Wiczer's office. I had to switch dentists because my old one was no longer in my network. I picked Dr. Wiczer because of her proximity to my office and her ability to get me in the office the next morning. They were only about 15 minutes late for my appointment, so not terrible. The hygienist was obviously a sadist. I think she was punishing me when I told her that I don't floss (yes, I know, I should floss and it won't hurt so bad, which is BS, because I've never flossed and never had this much pain after a dentist's visit), and continued to lecture me about it for the entire visit. She kept telling me that I should get x-rays, even though I told her several times that I had them at my last visit 6 months ago. She was pushing fluoride treatment, which I know my insurance doesn't cover for people over age 19. Then told me that I need a night guard because I grind my teeth (nobody has ever told me this before). And this is all before the doctor came in. Dr. Wiczer came in, didn't say a word to me, didn't introduce herself, nothing - I'm a brand new patient. She looked at my teeth for literally 15 seconds, talked about me to the hygienist like I wasn't even there, made some comment about "sorry, I'm tired today" and walked out of the room. I've already called to schedule another appointment with another dentist. I don't need to be up-sold on services at a dentist's office, especially considering that every other dentist I've ever been to has raved about how healthy my teeth are and told me to keep doing what I'm doing. And I don't need to be ignored by someone who is talking about MY medical/dental condition. Maybe "Dentist Barbie" should focus more on making sure her patients are happy and healthy than on making money. read more

I am so sick and tired of coming home to find an invoice in the mail from Dr. Wiczer's office. She reattached a crown that she put in a few years ago. Told me her new rule is to come back in two weeks so she can check it and an appointment was made for me. I'm too busy for that so I called and canceled 3 days in advance. A week after, I get a patient ledger in the mail of which $65 was for a no-show, and one of the charges ($124) was not covered by my insurance. I'm so done with these erroneous charges over the years that I could just scream. I honestly don't know if it's her or her office making these billing mistakes, but I will not be returning. I saw Dr Wiczer for two regular dental cleanings, and both times left with the sense that she was recommending things that were not necessary. The moment I set foot into her clinic the first time, I was hurried away to get a panorex x-ray (which I only found out after the appointment was not covered by my dental insurance, so i ended up having to pay for it unexpectedly). Both the hygenist and and Dr Wiczer said that they had observed evidence that I was grinding my teeth and needed a nightguard, even though no dentists I had seen previously had recommend such an appliance. I thought that perhaps other dentists had overlooked this "standard of care" device, so thought I would wait to spend over $400 for the appliance after discussing with my trusted former dentist. The second visit, six months later, a nightguard was again recommended. Dr Wiczer appeared for only a few minutes after my cleaning, and declared after briefly looking into my mouth that I had a cavity on my molar, even though the bitewing xrays just obtained did not show evidence of it. Before I had a chance to ask, Dr Wiczer left the exam room, and the hygenist instead explained that although there was no cavity on x-ray, Dr Wiczer's visual inspection suggested a cavity. I was directed to the secretary, who pressured me to schedule a follow up appointment to have the cavity be filled and for a nightguard cast to be made. When I got home, I noticed in my treatment plan printout the apparent cavity was marked on the dental diagram on the wrong tooth -- to a molar that had been extracted years ago! With that kind of mistake, I canceled my follow up appointment and decided to see another dentist. I waited to post this review to give Dr Wiczer the benefit of the doubt, but after just seeing another dentist in the area who did not see the cavity that Dr Wiczer had seen previously, nor insist that I need a nightguard, I feel that it is important to communicate my experience. read more

Imagine being treated to the best meal of your life while scenes of deep bowel surgery played on the walls around you. Imagine you could smell the procedure too. Going to Wiczer's is not far off from this scenario. She's a brilliant dentist with a wonderful bedside manner, in the single most idiot-filled place in Bethesda. My husband and I bundled our newborn and took to icy streets so that we could have our teeth cleaned. Oh yes- hubby took the day off work to get there on time. "Oh, we cancelled your appointment. Didn't you get the message?" No we didn't get the message! And I haven't taken my husband's name, so there would be no way of knowing we were together. At least ONE of us should have gotten a call to cancel. Appointments don't happen, she referred me to a MASOCHIST to pull my wisdom teeth- the dentist from "Little Shop of Horrors," was gentler. Dr. Josef Mengele probably had more compassion- but that's for another Yelp. I wish I could refer her, as I found her to be lovely. But you shouldn't have to trudge through Hell with imps probing your ass with hot pokers for a teeth cleaning. Hell would probably be more pleasant. read more

I've been terrorized by dentists as far back as I can remember. I've regarded them as unfeeling robots hell-bent on inflicting as much pain and flecks of fluoride on my clothes as they possibly could. Thank god I found Dr. Wiczer, because I was seriously considering just letting my teeth fall out and replacing them with wooden dentures, a-la my main man George Washington. Her office is small but tidy, and her staff are nothing but courteous and accommodating. I got a call a day in advance of a cleaning I had scheduled to let me know they'd be a little backed up, and that I should show up 15 minutes later so I wouldn't have to sit in the waiting room. When I arrived and flashed my Dental Network card, they said my name wasn't listed under the group number anymore, so the office assistant actually dialed customer service for me and wrote down all my information for future reference. The last time I got fillings from my family's dentist, the anesthesia wore off midway through the procedure and I could feel the drilling. It was excruciating. When I first visited Dr. Wiczer (after two gleeful years of no dentist visits) I was told I had three new cavities, and I freaked out. I explained my past experience to the technician, and she was completely understanding about my anxiety, making extra sure that everything was numb and that I was comfortable. Drilling, filling -- no pain! I was beyond impressed. I can't recommend this dentist and her staff enough. Insider info: Book cleanings and procedures well in advance, because this office is, not surprisingly, in high demand. Never again! Dr. Wiczer's office is a nightmare. We were unable to make an appointment for weeks, not because she was busy, but because nobody answered the phone! Once I finally confirmed the appointment for my family and myself, there was no record of the appointments when we showed up...none. Finally sat down with her and complained of a painful and sensitive area where another dentist had worked much earlier, her response was that there was nothing that could be done and that I should either take pain meds or live with it. I was able to go back to the original dentist some time later and he fixed the issue in ten minutes. My wife was aware of her dental issues but had only asked for a cleaning. Dr Wiczer took it upon herself to perform an entirely different procedure than the requested cleaning and charged me for services not covered by my insurance. read more

Stay away. This dentist is an upselling scam artist, and her "billing department" is as incompetent as they come. I was in town for a few days (I currently reside mostly overseas), and wanted to get one of my two yearly cleanings that my insurance provides for free. I was told over the phone that Dr. Wicszer accepted my insurance, so I scheduled the appointment. When I showed up, I explained that I had Cigna Global insurance, and provided an entire "Dental Benefit Summary" from Cigna with contact information for one of their claims agents who could handle any inquiries. No problem, I was told. I got in the chair. First, I was not given the option of not getting the "Adult Fluoride" treatment, $48 that is not covered by nearly any insurance now because most medical literature suggests it's worthless. Like Eugene below, I was told during the cleaning that I immediately needed a nightguard for $250, and without asking me or checking my insurance coverage, a hygienist was getting a fitting ready. Luckily, I put the brakes on, since none of the three prior dentists I've seen in the last two years has so much as mentioned this. Finally, the pressure to immediately re-schedule so that I could come back to get a look at this nightguard in only a month or two was heavy. It was just assumed that I was going to do it, and *despite the fact that I spend 90% of my time overseas*, they wanted to book me in anyways. Anyways, here's the kicker: two days before flying back out of the country, the bill arrives for $268, with the notation, "NO DENTAL BENEFITS" on a copy of my Cigna card attached to the bill. Now I get to spend today fighting with her office and scrambling to get this submitted properly to Cigna. People like this should not be allowed to run a medical office. read more

She accommodated me the next day and spent time explaining how to move forward with a permanent treatment plan. Spent very little time looking at my teeth before declaring these problems and would back down and then retract the need for the recommended service when I started asking questions about why there was a need for it. On the three occasions I've been she has found a different problem with my teeth -- the last time she said I needed to re-fill a filling and I've never had a filling nor any dental problems in the past. What a joke....90% of the reviews are negative yet "YELP" filters them all so you can only see the glowing reviews Wiczer's staff has decided to write to offset those written by actual patients. YES, she has been removed from another site for fraud. Wiczer(I refuse to call her a "Dr.") is never on time and reckless with the work done. Everything seems rushed(other than the hour long waits). I have had very poor work done by her which now needs to be corrected by a competent dentist. Why she still has patients I have no idea. I can some what tolerate the lack of skill she has, it's the dishonesty to cover up the poor work done that is unethical and unacceptable. See a 'top dentist' and it will be easy to see the difference when it comes to quality healthcare. Oh, and don't be surprised if you get the sales pitch for teeth whitening or mouthguard's. Initially, I was impressed by the thorough explanations and cooperation from the staff on helping me verify my insurance coverage concerns. This lulled me into a false sense of security, and I while stopped them from doing one thing that wasn't covered by insurance, even though the hygienist was "sure that is must be, but we can check" they did some X-Rays that weren't covered (now, as I read through the Yelp Reviews that were filtered..this is not a one off issues it seems...) Further, I went for a second opinion on some of the pricier fillings and they found one she missed and discovered that a couple of things she had mentioned were not areas of concern. She also stressed the need for an expensive night guard, using a sort of scare speech about my teeth all falling out and making it seem like a sometime soon problem. Apparently the night guard is a go to diagnosis, from reading some other reviews on Yelp. When I received the bill for the x-rays, incorrectly addressed, and after I tried speaking my insurance, I called the office to see if there was anything they could do to help out, since I had tried to be pretty clear that my funds were limited and that I was bound to the terms of the insurance (which has a pretty standard allowance for x-rays). I was told that someone would call me back when she was not with a patient. After a week I had not heard back. I tried to call back during business hours, to just pay it off so I don't end up owing more, and no one was there to answer the phone. Overall, I do not recommend, and this has been a very discouraging experience with a dentist. While I understand that some of the issue was with my insurance, it is concerning that the x-rays I paid extra for still had to be re-done when I got a second opinion, and that the diagnosis was quite different. I wish I had read all the negative reviews on this office before I made my appointment. I picked Dr. WIczer's name from a random list of dentists from my insurance. What I initially went in for was to see if my existing crown (5 years old, not made by her) was coming loose, thinking it would pop off and she would re-cement it. Now, after she drilled through and destroyed my existing crown taking it off, against my pleas not to (obviously it was not loose after all), I have paid $1200 for a new crown, my tooth has become infected, she has put the crown on the infected tooth and refused to even re-seat it or treat it, told me to wait 12 days and take an antibiotic even though I told her I was in pain at the appointment to put the new crown on , and now I am booked for a root canal with another dentist, and if they can't save this crown I have to pay for a 2nd brand new crown! And of course every visit she tries to sell me a night guard. Now, today I find out from my insurance that while the snotty front desk woman demanded loudly in front of other clients that I pay the full 1200$ for the first crown up front, even though I told her I thought I had only a portion to pay, I actually DID only have a portion as payment and should not have been charged the full $1200 for the crown. I have filed an appeal with my insurance to try to get the money back that I was over charged (about $500!). read more

I highly recommend Dr. Roanne J. Wiczer, DMD, and her excellent staff. In my late 60s, I've learned the hard way how critical it is to have conscientious dental care in order to preserve one's teeth. We outlive our body parts and technical skill is required to hang on to them. Dr. Wiczer and her staff have done a stellar job with me. Each problem has been handled professionally, including teaching me how to change my brushing, flossing, gum-rinsing, and nightguard-wearing habits. Such advice is painful to hear. Changing one's daily routine is even harder when someone is as vain and lazy like me. Dr. Wiczer and her dental hygienist, Shiva, not only have high standards but their prices are reasonable compared to a lot of Washington, DC dentistry practices. In Europe, where most of my family lives, American dentists are regarded as expensive but knowledgeable in cutting-edge science -- no doubt due to our convenient but teeth-decaying American food!! This is a joke. There are a dozen one star reviews that Yelp "filters." Why? They deal with serious issues such as that which I raise. Here's my experience. Wiczer pushed a nightguard on me as essential and critical because of excessive wear to my teeth, etc. But she refused to submit the bill to my insurance company, despite the fact that my insurance pays 50% of nightguard costs. Her staff repeatedly changed the purported coding for the nightgaurd to substantiate Wiczer's claim that her nightguards somehow are "unique" and not covered. They first said it was not covered because my insurance company only covered softguards (standard billing code 9940) and Wiczer's was a hard nightguard. I called my insurance company and they said that was false; they covered both hard and soft.. When I told Wiczer's staff this, they told me the code was 7789. I called my insurance company back, and they said that code had nothing to do with nightguards of any sort; it referred to Temporomandibular joint disorder treatment! Third time - they changed the code to 9999, which my insurance company said also was irrelevant, as it stands for to "unspecified adjudicative code." Wiczer herself told me that she had called my insurance company, and that they had confirmed that her self-purported special customm-amde guards were not covered. I called the insurance company and they said that was not the case. They told me that such a determination only could be made if a claim form were submitted; that no conclusion could be reached over the phone, as Wiczer claimed had been the case. Upshot, I went to a highly rated dentist who told me that my teeth were fine and that I did not need a nightguard. Draw your own conclusions...... I slso noticed that Wiczer's listing on the dr. oogle dentist review website was "under review." I give the reasons why dentists are under review verbatim from the site: " DR.Oogle may, without warning, change dentist rating, delete reviews and suspend practice listing of any dentist whose reviews, in our judgment, appear to have been manipulated. # There are currently 765 suspended dentists." This may explain the gushing reviews..... You also may wish to check out the dozens of poor reivews on rate meds. read more

The incompetence of this dentistry is amazing. I just received a bill for $42 from a bill collection agency. I saw her once about five years ago for a regular check-up, everything was fine and I rescheduled another appointment for my next six month check-up. A few weeks later I canceled because I got new insurance and wanted to see a different dentist because I honestly was not completely comfortable with her or the way my appointment went. Dr. Wiczer is a sweetheart, however, don't confuse work with personality. She often assumes that you agree to all the services even before knowing the cost. Good strategy to get patients to use the services. The younger office assistant (who collects payment) is not very friendly and sometimes rude. She can use a customer service class if she wants to be in this industry. Prices are very high and they not often work with you. I know is a hassle to look for another dentist, but sometime is needed. read more

I call this place the "tooth mill". The first time I went they tried to sell me a major deep clean on my teeth for $750; I have my teeth cleaned every 6 months, then they spent 15 minutes cleaning my teeth. Dr. Wiczer saw me for two minutes and rattled off 6 fillings that needed to be redone. Stupid me, I made the appointment which they promptly forgot about. But they fit me in. One hour later Dr. Wiczer has finished removing and replacing 6 fillings. She never flossed my teeth to get rid of the filling residue. It took several months before I was able to break through and floss my teeth! 6 months later my new dentist tells me that 4 of the fillings were improperly done and have decay underneath them! She is a hack and should have her license revoked. read more

I have consistently had terrible experience at this dentist. Do not risk it! They are money-grubbing, curt, dismissive, and rude, and the office is dirty. (The people in the waiting room can actually see you getting procedures done!) It is clearly a dentist for people who have no other choice. I only go because it is close to work and takes my insurance, but I will never go again. Last time, they charged me a $50 "missed" appointment fee when I called the morning of my appointment to tell them I had come down with the flu. I told the receptionist it would be a health risk to ask patients to come in when they are very sick, but she didn't seem to care. I asked to speak to someone else, but apparently no one else was free. They said someone would call me back, but no one ever did. But of course I DID receive a bill for my "missed appointment." Other times, I consistently have to wait for a very long time, including once in the actual procedure room for about 40 minutes just for the nurse to show up and do a cleaning. A colleague of mine had an even worse experience at this dentist. She was halfway through a procedure (literally, her gums were still numb and they were still working on her) and they informed her at that moment that a new procedure had to be done, and they wouldn't proceed to do anything unless she paid up front for this new procedure, which had not been discussed in advance. read more

If I could give her zero stars I would. This has to be thee worst dentist office in the area. Very unprofessional in every aspect by Wiczer. We were given pricing on the first visit for a list of dental work that needed to be done and we were told that included everything she had mentioned. So we made an appointment for the second visit, we show up and come to find out the price they gave us jumped up 6 times the original price. No mention of price change until we asked how much it would cost again(I was wondering whether to put it on my credit card or debit card). She was ready to go ahead with procedure with out going over the price change until the subject was asked. It blows my mind how she thought this was normal business practice. Their lack of communication with pricing is very sketch, seems intentional and more like bait and switch. read more

I wish I had read the reviews of Dr. Wiczer's practice b/f going there. She is competent, but as others have said, her office is very poorly run. No one ever answers the telephone, and when you are lucky enough to get someone to pick up, they are utterly useless. You may not think this matters, but Dr. Wiczer isn't the one to handle billing problems, insurance problems, follow-up appointments, access to and copies of medical records, etc. If you think long and hard about this component of a medical provider, you'll understand that just finding a dentist who does her job well is only part of the equation! I agree with Joey S. as well about the push for teeth whitening and mouth guards. I spent a ton of $$ on a mouth guard only for it not to fit properly...Dr. Wiczer told me that if I spent more $$, she could get me one that would be better...OMG and ??? I've called her office daily and wrote a letter and still no one is sending my new dentist my medical records and x-rays... Again, if only I found these reviews prior to becoming an unsatisfied patient! read more
