I searched locally and found Gentlemen's Gallery Principessa in downtown Asheville. Allen, the owner, was incredibly helpful, friendly, and funny. He showed me my options, made some measurements, and had the suit ready for me to try on in three days. Some quick final alterations and I had my suit. The quality is outstanding - comfortable, perfect fit, and a modern classic. I could not be more pleased with my experience. Allen is a pro, and Asheville is lucky to have him and his wonderful business, Gentlemen's Gallery Principessa.

Jackson's main floor, upstairs, is your typical boots/hats/dungaree selection that seems to cater towards locals looking for solid values, more than out-of-towners looking for fancy stuff. I mean, nobody comes to AVL to buy a Stetson, but some people round here like to wear them, and if you're one of those people, this is where you find that sort of stuff. That said, I took a Prada-wearing Italian politician to Jackson's one time, and she must have blown a thousand bucks on "authentic American" souvenirs to bring back to all her European friends. I started calling her "Spaghetti Western" after that. I thought that was pretty funny. Downstairs underneath the Jacksons retail salesfloor is a hidden basement with a working leather shop that makes stuff like the harnesses for carriages that take tourists around Central Park in NYC. Really high-end bespoke stuff. So yeah, maybe the desk clerk isn't all that chatty, but it seems disingenuous to say this shop isn't a local treasure, or to imply that they somehow aren't that good at the few things they do--things that are highly specialized, and hard to find anywhere else. There is minimal risk of infection at Asheville's most wonderful boutique! They are all masked up and make sure that their patrons are as well. They limit the number of people allowed in the shop, they steam clean any clothes that have been tried on and they disinfect the store between shoppers. Visiting on a Sunday afternoon, the building felt surprisingly quiet. There was very little foot traffic, and many of the shops had few or no customers, giving the space an empty atmosphere rather than the lively marketplace I expected. It's very disappointing!! Parking is another downside. There's no free parking nearby, so you'll need to use metered street parking or pay for one of the public parking garages if you're driving. I prepaid 1.5 hours and was out of the building in less than half and hour.

Located on Walnut off Broadway, it's a small shop that offers women's and men's clothing. There's a mix of eras under one roof and I noticed they have a good selection of men's clothing, which sometimes is a struggle for the guys who like vintage. When I went this time, there was a smaller selection of women's clothing, but most of the pieces seemed to be in fair condition. Spotted a vintage Dior jacket, but decided to not grab it. I'd guess that most of the clothing at the time that I went was from the 1970s-now. Mostly I saw tops, tees, and jackets, along with vintage denim. Parking options include street parking and parking lots where you pay by the hour. I went with the latter as it was more cost effective when I compiled my list of shops to visit in the same area. I recommend going that route because most of the shops are on the main streets and it's easy to reach them by walking.
