First used them about a three years ago in 2015. They did a lot of work on my 1997 Boxster. Replaced water coolant tank, water pump, chain tensioners. They also replaced cable top push rods. All in all, a couple thousand dollars in repairs which is a lot. But that was over a decade of needed repairs, partly due to the previous Porsche mechanic in Redwood City that went out of business. They are fair and very reasonable. They don't apply the Porsche mechanic tax that guys named Hans or Dieter who speak with a Bavarian accent get. My last recent visit prompted this review. My son who inherited the Boxster tried to replace the halogen bulbs and kind of messed things up mixing up the low beams with ghost lights. They sorted things out and only charged for a bulb which was cheaper than buying online from Pelican Parts. The two Dans are a rare find and I hope they will also do work on our Audi A3. I was fortunate enough to inherit my father's '65 356 convertible and immediately sought out a mechanic so I'd be prepared in the event it needed repairs. The Porsche dealer on Stevens Creek sent me to Bob and for the 10 years I owned and loved that car, Bob took great care of it. He is honest, has integrity and would let me know what I needed to work on now and what could wait. I always felt my car was in good hands and that I was charged fairly. As a woman, I appreciated that Bob explained every issue so that I could understand the problem and that he respected the long history I had with my dad's car. When it came time last year to part with it, I called Bob to help and he put me in touch with a buyer the same day. The 356 still gets great care at Bob's shop with its current owner. read more

RMG is fantastic! I first heard of Bob's shop shortly after moving to the Bay Area from Southern California. Now, over 10 years and 4 Porsche's later, I am still going back. I will admit, I have occasionally had minor work done at other shops over the years, including my local Porsche dealership (Sunnyvale is a bit of a hike from where I live and work so I have had the occasional oil change done elsewhere), but I have not found a repair/maintenance facility that offers the same combination of quality, service, and above all, attention to detail as RMG. Bob and his team are outstanding, particularly when it comes to troubleshooting or dealing with complex issues. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and will admit to being fairly anal when it comes to my vehicles. However, I always feel confident leaving my cars in the hands of Bob and his two experienced technicians (Dan and Dan). They have the experience necessary to perform repairs and maintenance on older cars, but always stay up to date with the latest information and equipment, making them equally adept at working on a 997. The garage is always clean, Bob and the Dan's are consistently helpful and friendly, and they simply perform damn good work. I should point out that this is not a discount repair shop, so I would not recommend RMG to someone looking to cut corners or save a substantial amount of money vs. what the dealer usually charges. However, in my opinion, their work is better than what you would get from the dealer. They take very good care of their customers, are honest, will go the extra mile to make sure that you are satisfied, and overall, provide a great value. read more

I've taken my busted-up Boxster, or portions thereof, to RMG on a couple of occasions. On the first I'd stripped out the nuts holding in the throwout bearing, and Bob removed them for me without hardly even laughing at me at all. Well I took that transmission back home and let it and my Boxster sit in a garage for *two years*, the bolted it together just enough to get it rolling, and sent it down to RMG and asked them to make it work again. They said they wouldn't make any promises, but they'd see what they could do; then they buttoned it back up and had it rolling again for less than half of their original estimate. Thank you guys at RMG. I purchased my first Porsche and they did a post purchase inspection. Service was awesome, I got photos to document in my historical records. With the work they did, the car runs perfectly. I was treated very well, and was given a detailed review of the car's health. Luckily, the engine is very clean. If you are looking to purchase a Porsche, make sure you get these guys to do a Pre Purchase Inspection. I was lucky. I even got a left over bottle of Mobile 1 tucked away in my trunk wrapped in a ziploc bag. This review is only for the Porsche 914 and is in no way to reflect the overall quality of knowledge and workmanship of this shop. It is only my experience and your results may vary. I took my bone stock 1973 Porsche 914 to this shop while looking for a qualified mechanic for this vehicle. I know the 914s very well but am at a point in my life where I don't need, nor do I have time to tinker with the car myself. I had asked if they were able to tune the fuel injection system since proper tuning requires knowing the system quite well. I bring it in for a look and the owner comes out, takes a look at the motor and tells me it's been "hacked" together. Knowing this car very well and having had several 914s it was very clear this guy was clueless when it came to this car. The system was EXACTLY as it came from the factory. All I have to say is, if it's a 914, take it somewhere else. He simply told me he doesn't work on "hacked up" cars and actually gave me a reference to a wonderful shop that knows the 914 inside and out. If you have a 914 and need help with it, call them up and ask them where to bring the car. They will likely steer you in the right direction as they did me. If they tell you to bring it in, just hang up. It left a sour taste in my mouth when this guy told me my car was "hacked up". He was dead wrong about that but overall it worked out. (by the way, the problem was diagnosed and fixed at the other shop in less than an hour. Fuel pressure regulator adjustment.) read more

This is the best independent Porsche mechanic in the Bay Area. "Doctor Leitner" or "DL" did excellent work on my Boxster, including a brake job and replacing a cracked coolant tank. I believe the work to be at least as good as at a dealer, if not better, at a lower price. read more

Hi, If you haven't already: 1) Educate yourself regarding what makes Porsches tick. 2) Join PCA/Loma Prieta or Golden Gate Regions to network and learn from others. 3) Get more than one qualified opinion before having your car worked on. Have the shop owner agree to the following before any work is started: 1) Get everything in writing. 2) Get a quote. 3) Keep your car in their shop should it stay overnight. 4) Accept liability if damage is done to your car while they have it. 5) Send you a written change order should unforeseen work be discovered. I am pretty new to the area and was looking for a good independent Porsche shop. Bob @ RMG came highly recommended by a fellow PCA member. I had taken my 2001 Boxster in to have what I thought was a bearing problem fixed. Not only did Bob correctly diagnose the problem as a severely worn lower ball joint, he went out of his way to confirm that all my wheel bearings were just fine. He pointed out a few other minor issues with my car that will need taken care of in the near future, but there was no "hard sell" or pressure to get the work done now. I recently purchased a 911 Carrera and asked for suggestions on a Porsche forum on where I should take it for service. RMG was repeatedly recommended, even though they are an hour away from me. I talked with Dan there and was very impressed with his knowledge and willingness to spend time with me on the phone. I was purchasing the car from an out-of-state seller and Dan (at my request) called the local repair shop I had hired to perform a pre-purchase inspection. Shortly after bringing the car home, it quit running on a Saturday night at 8pm. I texted Dan and even though he was out camping, he made arrangements for Bob at his shop to bring my car inside after being dropped off at 11pm! They fixed my car right away (needed an alternator) and I had them get it smog tested. They pre-tested the car as a courtesy and caught and corrected a rich-running situation before the smog test would have labelled the car a gross polluter. I had purchased a chip to improve the car's performance and RMG installed it for me when I picked up the car. The car wouldn't start after installation and they called the chip maker to discover the mother board of my car's computer needed some soldering. They immediately loaned me another computer to put in my car so I could drive it until my original computer was correctly modified by the chip maker. Awesome! I would highly recommend meeting Dan and Bob if you're looking to get your Porsche serviced properly. read more

Top notch mechanics at RMG! Took my 85 Carrera here to get a 2nd opinion on a mysterious shake under acceleration. Bob and Dan spent the time to look over the car and after numerous test drive they determined it likely cause by a failed axle. Dan replaced the axle in a fly and ta-da...problem solved! I originally discovered the Real Mean Garage in 2004 when I needed a 30K service, and have been going there ever since. I love that it's a small shop, and you quickly get to know Bob, Dan and DL. They've been reliable, easy to work with, flexible, completely trustworthy and knowledgeable on problems big and small. example: an intermittent check ABS light. They run the diagnostic codes, which don't point to anything specific. They get on the Internet, and discover that half the time it's a $10 switch. The next day, I swing by and get the switch replaced in 5 minutes. Fixed! Only a small, know your customers on sight, shop can handle repairs that way. read more

I have been going to Bob and 2 Dan's for the past 9 years. I believe they do a better job than the Dealer, at a fraction of the cost. I had a 97 Boxster which was breaking down all the time. I was always going to the dealer, and it was getting pricey. At first, I was a little skeptical, but I was referred to RMG by another Porsche owner. When I arrived, I noticed how clean the shop was. It was spotless. The knowledge is top notch, and the pricing is always less than I anticipate. (don't raise the prices on me now Bob). I sold the 97 Boxster and purchased a Cayenne. I own a 1976 930 and bob has been servicing it since the 90's and I just realized Bob has been very accommodating all these years, he would take the Amtrak and I pick him up at the station so I don't have to drive all the way from SF to Sunnyvale and he would drive my car back to the city when it's done and I would drop him off at the Amtrak station and he takes the train back home. I finally have the honor to meet the rest of the team back in 2012, and yes they are all wonderful people that will treat your Porsche like their own's. I am now being very selfish and hoping Bob won't retire soon because when that day comes I will part my 930, it will be a very sad day! read more
