This older, well kept, local theater hosts many plays and musicals put on by local writers, directors and actors. A great place to begin, conveniently located in downtown Ypsilanti near the river. Parking is nearby and easily accessible. The seats were not comfortable, so let's make sure to patronize events in order to upgrade!!!

My fiance and I recently had an engagement party at the Historic Blum Barn, and I cannot emphasize…read moreenough how amazing of an event it turned out to be. The owners, George and Mirela, were beyond accommodating by servicing every need and helping us make the day everything we dreamed it would be. I cannot express enough how beautiful of a venue the Historic Blum Barn is. From the landscaping to the overall design and craftsmanship of the barn, you are getting a quality that you won't find anywhere else. The owners were so amazing to work with! No matter what it was, George and Mirela made it possible; they were by our side every step of the way and took so much stress off our shoulders. If you considering a wedding or special event, you've come to the right place. You really can't go wrong with the Historic Blum Barn. The owners are flexible, extremely helpful, and they will make your dream into a reality.

It is so well taken care of by the owners and it shows! Mirela and George went above and beyond to make our day special and exactly how we wanted it. They are both so genuinely kind, and you can tell they are passionate about what they do. George was our officiant and did a perfect job. He met with us beforehand and went over the ceremony with us a few times leading up to the wedding to make sure it was exactly what we wanted. Our day was truly perfect and ran so smoothly, thanks to them and their amazing assistant Grace. I cannot recommend the Historic Blum Barn enough!!

More important to you, it's nestled in a beautiful neighborhood about one mile to most elements of the U of M central campus. So you can walk, if you're so inclined, and five to ten minutes in a car gets you to any number of important or interesting places. Parking is on the street, which turned out to be no problem, as there always were plenty of spaces near the entry sidewalk. Perhaps it's helpful to say that the Stone Chalet campus is the site of a former Unitarian church. That's how I remember it, driving/jogging by during student years. Therese remembers it was the site of piano recitals. Anyway, the former "main building" has been converted to an event center (we didn't spend much time there) and the former parsonage converted to guest quarters. Our room was Alice-in-Wonderland themed, spacious and cozy for an autumn visit. Breakfast was ordered via an app, with many choices, including gluten-free options for Therese. If you want a good and even inspiring conversation, seek out the owner Vincent, who can share some fascinating stories about real estate and his efforts to purchase, maintain, and make profitable the Stone Chalet property. We enjoyed our time here, and wish Vincent, Daisy, family and staff, all the best. Thank you, Stone Chalet.

The reception was inside the Raisin River Room and it was adorable! The tables were smaller but fine. They had boosters and highchairs already at the tables for guests with children which was thoughtful. The food was AMAZING. I loved everything I ate (sorry I didn't take pics but I was having such a good time!) The staff was so kind and professional. I used to be a server for events like this so I know what their protocol is but man, it's still annoying when they clear your water glass by 8pm if you're not sitting down. I was also interested as to why the tables were laid out how they were because the reception was not having any dancing but there was a big open space that could have spaced out the tables more comfortably. Oh well. I'd love to attend another event there and see inside the Carriage House

However, I would recommend if you choose this venue that you hire a wedding planner and not rely on their onsite staff to coordinate the running of the event. Also, if well crafted drinks matter to you, bring in your own bartenders in (if they will allow you to do this). Their bartenders are kind but not well trained. Though we took a lot of time to lay out the event with the site coordinator (at her request), much of what we talked about had to be renegotiated the evening of the event. Our requests on timing of the evening, when dinner should start, how the cake should be served, the fact we did not want tip jars, when we wanted the fire lighted, etc. Had not been communicated to the onsite staff and our planners had to repeatedly make requests. Without our own onsite planners, we would have been chasing these details down all night ourselves. The venue will tell you do not need planners, but you do. Also, there are small things that take away from the elegance of the site and evening, such as a big plastic cart going up and down the aisles as the staff takes the dishes and dumps them in after dinner. (They do carry the servings to the bride and groom in such an elegant way, which was in such contrast to how they cleared the tables.) I absolutely recommend the venue for its natural beauty and distinctive architecture--there really is nothing like it at this price. Our guests loved it and had a wonderful time. If the event details matter to you, though, I strongly recommend hiring your own staff to oversee them and making specific staffing requests for key roles, especially bartenders.
