The Rangeley Lakes region is massive and holds six large lakes, as well as hundreds of smaller lakes, ponds, and streams. I started my adventure driving in on the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway which takes you way up on some ridges with vast sweeping views of the valley that holds gigantic Mooselookmeguntic Lake!! You'll have the opportunity to pull off for photos at Height of Land waypoint and I highly recommend the stop - a great way to start your trip! I based myself out of Rangeley and stayed at the quaint Rangeley Inn & Tavern and it was so perfect! Rangeley is right in the heart of the region and sits between lovely Haley Pond (full of Loons!!) and magnificent Rangeley Lake which has spectacular sunsets and seaplane excursions. Apparently modern day fly fishing was born in this region which doesn't surprise me. This is a sportsman's paradise to be sure! Fishing, hunting, ATVing - all very popular here. As well as hiking and tons of birding! In winter it's all about skiing and snowmobiling. I came to this region in search of moose and explored as much as I could - all the way up to the giant Chain of Ponds pushing up to the Canadian border. And while I didn't find any moose, I still had an amazing adventure and will definitely be back!!

Fall Back Who knew a…read morerest area could be a "must-stop" if one ever finds themselves on a roadie to Rangeley, but yet here we are. Rest areas are usually for stretching, picnicking, and pooping (not necessarily in that order fwiw), and while this place certainly allows for all of the above, it's the nature that makes this a top-notch hiking spot, as well. The Good: *Several pit toilets (don't look down) *Picnic tables *Parking lot isn't huge but it's ample enough. *Series of small cascading water falls with trails along the edges and access to the water. I'm honestly not sure how far back the trails go, but by the time I got to the top it looked like you could keep going for a bit. *Great spot for leaf-peeping The Meh: *The road around the lot is gravely, so don't drive too fast or you'll kick up rocks. The Ugly: *Those pit toilets are...0_o *Yelp Mods who can't read a map to save their lives. I've already had them adjust the pin on here several times and they never get it right--there's LITERALLY A PIN on the map that says "Small Falls Rest Area" and they just stick it in arbitrary places. I'm pretty sure they're fucking with me at this point. 0_o Conclusion: If you find yourself in Rangeley Maine or thereabouts, then be sure to add this place to your list of things to see.

It really is big enough to be a lake and it goes by a couple of different names. It was quiet with just a few people around. Bartender Jacqueline was phenomenal helping pick out something to drink, Blueberry Margarita was on point! She was very helpful and attentive to my needs as well. The chairs at the tables did not have backs and I need one with a back for health reasons. She took a stool from the bar with a back to make me more comfortable. Thank you! We were here for the Tom Ball band. We are fans of the music and vibe they bring. Early so we ordered some food. We started with the loaded Tots which comes with cheese and pulled pork, we really enjoyed them. The Panini we chose was the Cubano, I requested NO JALAPEÑOS, I have a strong dislike for them, they take over the flavor profile of any sandwich added too. We waited a bit then they arrived. I immediately noticed the Jalapeño green and told the cook that I requested no jalapeño on my sandwich. She told us she would scrap off as best as she could. Hm, how is that going to eradicate the taste I'm have such a repugnance too? Shortly she returned with a now tired looking sandwich that tastes like Jalapeño. My question is why not make a new one? I barely finished half of it was so nasty They were supposed to take off our bill but they did not. Just some advice, remake the sandwich, don't skimp and scrap the unwanted item off the sandwich because the flavor stays behind. Your name goes out in every plate you serve and this was not a good sandwich. For a Friday night with a band playing they really need two bartenders. As the crowd grew, Jacqueline was running to help us. One of the partners was there, he helped for a little while then was off socializing or standing outside. The bar really could have used his help. We will definitely be back for drinks and music. I don't think we will eat a meal there again after this experience.

May the Forest be with You…read more 100-acres of forested land adjacent to Rangeley Lake that was first acquired by the Main Audubon Society back in 1974 before being donated to the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust in 2003. The Good: *Free *1.5-miles of trails that includes some loops *Gorgeous forest and pristine shoreline *Outhouse near the parking area *Leashed dogs ok *Trails are flat and almost no elevation gain, but be wary of the roots. Lots and lots of roots. The Meh: *Trails aren't traditionally marked with signage, but with colored paint on trees. Just follow the dots, á la Pac-Man®, and you'll be fine. Fwiw I walked thru most of the park and only saw red and white dots, but I'd recommend taking a photo of the map before you begin to help. *Small private lot that could fill up fast on busier days, but we pretty much had the place to ourselves. *Not ADA Compliant The Ugly: *Once you make it down to the shore of the lake, you can't really travese the edge of the lake without sinking into the soft ground. I guess if you don't mind wet, muddy feet then go for it. I've been there, done that, and once was enough. :) Conclusion: Fun hike that is low effort with a nice reward.

Such a great hidden nook! This is a great casual 9 hole Par 3 wilderness golf course, good for all…read moreskill levels of golfers. There was two tee boxes per hole and a few holes that were surprisingly tricky. At hole 3 theres this great brook that runs by the property adding to the relaxing vibe. There was a huge bus full of old clubs the owner let my friend borrow some so he could play a round with us. Rocky the owner told us he built the place by hand over the last 20 or so years, and has quite a few interesting stories from its history. We really enjoyed the spot!

I came here for kayaking. It is not very developed compared…read moreto First Connecticut Lake. So it is quiet and peaceful. To kayak all the shore of the lake took about 2 hours. Saw goose and its babies, and loons. Nice to be on the water. Also we saw some people fishing on the shore, must be good fish in the lake.
