Our guide, Hauns, was hands down the nest guide I've ever had on any trip, and I've taken plenty. He was engaged yet not overbearing, instructful but not over the top know it all, he made our vacation feel like a vacation, and by the end of the trip he was border line family. @mainekayak is hands down the best trip you can take managed by the best people around. We went on a family camping trip to hike and go white water rafting. This place surpassed…read moreexpectations for so many reasons. 1. Location is very convenient to Moxie Falls. About a 10 minute drive away. 2. The camping offers many options from hotel rooms in the lodge, to cabins, to RV sites, tent sites and cabin-tents. We tried the cabin-tent and LOVED it. We are use to camping in tents so a cabin-tent felt luxurious. 3. The lodge offers a huge hot tub, a swimming pool, corn hole, billiards, and an arcade...complete with several claw games which all kids love. 4. The food and drinks are really quality. We're talking gourmet food, but good selection of classics and something for everyone. They have a great selection of craft beer. 5. The white water rafting is down to a science! They offer gear for staying warm even when wet...wetsuit parts (jackets, pants, booties), and of course life jackets and helmets. You literally just have to show up. 6. The guides and staff in the lodge are very knowledgeable, very friendly, and some of them are very funny. All of them are great to talk to. We rafted the Kennebec, and we can't wait to come back and do the Dead River and the Penobscot too!

Nice cozy couches in this area as well. The staff were some of the nicest people I have ever met. This is an all season place. It is definitely worth the trip!

He also likes supporting small businesses vs. big box stores for purchase which led us here. Pulling up to the store it is very appealing with a large kayak selection all shapes , sizes and colors. The grounds are immaculately kept and pet friendly. Aaron and Russ were very experienced in their knowledge about all of the products for sale. My son had lots of questions and we were there over an hour. Other customers came as well and they were patient and attentive. My son purchased a kayak, paddles and paid a small fee to have a rack installed to drive it home. (See pic) They had a lot of tips to share and were very enthusiastic to share them. A side note I went there a few years ago for snowmobile gear and it was the same experience. Their prices are competitive but most importantly we need to continue to support small Maine businesses wherever we can. Also had fishing gear, sports clothing etc.. Look no further.

The paddling was more difficult than I expected, but Dan was great about guiding me down the stretches I was struggling through. He was extremely knowledgeable about Maine ecology and history, sharing information and stories with us as we made our way down the river. The campsites all were beautiful. Dinner and breakfast cooked over an open fire every day, with an impressive and delicious menu. This trip was definitely a splurge for our family, but well worth it. I would highly recommend a trip with Smoking Rivers if you find yourself in the Bangor area.

They provide the tents, canoes, paddles, etc. you just need to bring your spirit of adventure! Their packing list gets you ready for whatever the weather may be. Every time we're here staying in Ocean Point, we make a point to visit Tidal Transit Kayak Company…read morefor a guaranteed great time on the water. The past two times we've been here, we've done their guided wildlife kayak tour which includes a stop on Ram Island with snacks. This summer, given the COVID issues, they are unable to offer any guided tours but you can go down to their dock and rent stand up paddle boards or kayaks (single or double) and they will provide you with waterproof maps of the harbor so you can paddle to various locations and explore on your own. They also provided us with waterproof sacks and life vests. It was all first come first serve (I couldn't reserve the kayaks ahead of time) but they have so many it's not an issue. They said they do have more demand for paddle boards from time to time. We rented three double kayaks and wore our masks, as did the staff, until we shoved off the dock. We did the recommended kayak path to Burnt Island and walked around the island a bit before we headed back around the bay. In truth, two of our party decided to just float in the bay in their kayak and didn't paddle anywhere. All in all it was a wonderful and different way to experience the bay by kayak than the guided tours and at the end, they gave each of our teenagers/young adults a Tidal Transit Kayak sticker for their water bottles/laptops. I tried to pay for them but they gave them to us for free - and we will gladly advertise their company for them! Next time you're in Boothbay Harbor and looking for a fun, COVID-safe, outdoor activity for the whole family, make sure to visit Tidal Kayak Transit Company.
