The moss…read morecovered drive by the river to the farm was nothing short of magical for someone who's accustomed to an urban jungle. This was a weekly splurge while staying on the Oregon coast. The farm is adorable! On one visit, Pat & her daughter were gracious enough to take the time to show me around. It just so happened that a kid was being birthed! Suffice it to say, I was elated, in awe & humbled to be able to witness the beginning of another generation that produces such yummy chevre. Thanks for taking the time to share that. Now back to the cheese - the Sunset Bay with scrambled eggs, sauteed shallots & baguette made the best breakfast. Up In Smoke was perfect as a snack with Trader Joe's Pita Bite Crackers. The Cape Foulweather was perfect for a brioche & fig preserve grilled cheese. I'd definitely recommend making your way through the forest to find this gem of a farm.

I've been a fan of the tortes (my favorite being the Goat Cheese Frangelico with nuts, vanilla and brown sugar!! Just like ice cream!), but wanted to visit a working local cheese producing farm in Oregon. On that pretext my friends and I embarked on a "cheesecation". After a long drive past OSU, the green and lush pastures of Philomath, and just as the mountains and fresh salt air tell you the beach is near, we find our way there. This farm is in very rural Oregon, and beautiful valleys snugly hold the river and the farm in their palm. A great tiny banner greeted us at the gate, and we immediately smelled not goat, but cheese. Amazing! The farm is exceedingly tidy, and the family is delightful to talk to. They really love their goats, and the goats are a herd of around 55 very sweet little creatures. I don't know goats well, so I couldn't tell you the breeds. There were a few sheep as well. The cheese is stellar. The best I have had. I have eaten a LOT of goat cheese in my career at a distributor, but if you can find a better one, please send a note my way. The Siletz Goat log, with a crust of bloomy edible rind was my next favorite after the tortes. It was deliciously creamy, salty and piquant with a hit of grass but NO usual goatiness. The pate on the cheese was tender but flaky, and tends toward soft and spreadable when aged. Also their small goat cheese balls in olive oil with Rosemary and Peppercorn are excellent. Creamy, milky and delicious. Soft and supple but very pliable on the tongue and nice mouth-feel. You get the Rosemary right on the sides fo the tongue. Check out the web-site for more info!! You can find their wonderful cheeses at Steve's Cheese and New Seasons Markets. Please check them out!!

Weekday visits generally occur in the…read moreafternoon following work, thus requiring a meal, but most of the time I want to be hanging out on the sand, not sitting in a restaurant. Thus, I've become pretty knowledgeable about the takeout options in the area, and there are several good ones, but my go to is a sandwich from Sea Gulp. On my first visit we arrived to find several other couples waiting on orders (it's clear this is where the locals go). It took some time to locate the order sheets as they are in a bin on a little table to the right as you walk in the front door, but it was empty. They utilize reusable sheets so had to clean some to get them ready for the next customers, just ask the cashier if you don't spot any. Anyways, once we placed our order it probably took 20 or so minutes for the sandwiches. Not too bad, but we were rarin' to get out to the beach, so it felt long! We did use the time to wander the store for other goodies and there is a lot to discover. Of course, they have the usual (and unusual!) snacks and drinks, but there are also games and souvenirs, and all sorts of supplies you might have forgotten you'd need for your beach day like towels, SPF, and toys. The employees were (and always are) very nice and once we got our sandwiches we headed right across the street (so convenient!) to D River parking and found a piece of driftwood on which to eat our dinner. I am not a particular lover of sandwiches, but theirs are darn good! My favorite is the Italian Sub with almost all the veggies, but I have tried the pastrami and turkey as well and liked them too. They've got a great variety of bread options and do breakfast sammies and burritos too. Now we just call and order about 15 minutes before we arrive and the timing works perfectly. For about $10 you get a fresh, big (honestly, I usually can't finish them) meal that will keep you satisfied and fueled for your sandy adventures. As they are so customizable it is a great way to get something everyone will be happy with. And since they are located in a convenience store you can pick up drinks, dessert, and or anything you might have forgotten. There is seating out front if you'd rather eat there. Oh, and they do have specials so make sure to check those out too.

It's a small, cave-like space that may house a half a dozen people. There are no stools, just a tasting menu, a bar in a cave that's filled with dollar bills hanging from the ceiling and off the walls. I wasn't impressed with the wine because a lot of it was sweet fruit wine, which is not my thing. I did buy a bottle, which was overpriced, but this wasn't a high-pressure spiel and only a $10.00 tasting fee per person, which was deducted from the wine purchase. The tasting lasted 15-minutes. Fun, quick and easy!

The winery is inside a small cave with so many dollar bills hanging from the walls and the ceiling. You can actually hang your own dollar bill on the ceiling/wall and decorate it with sharpies that they have on the counter. We really don't carry any cash these days so we didn't have anything to hang on their ceiling or the walls lol. The nice gentleman behind the counter showed us what kinds of wines they had available upon our entry. He explained to us that if we did at least three different tastings, then we would be able to buy a wine bottle for $10 off, in which we agreed upon. We tried the following wines - Chardonnay, peach, pear, and apple jack. My absolute favorites were the Chardonnay and the apple jack, while my boyfriend enjoyed the peach and the pear. The apple jack was kind of like apple juice but with alcohol mixed in. I loved the apple jack so much that we decided to buy a bottle of it. We were told that Depoe Bay Winery is able to ship their wines to Las Vegas, where we're visiting from, and the best part is that there's no sales tax involved when we buy from them when we get back home! Amazing! This is definitely something I'm looking forward to. Will highly recommend this winery to everyone visiting the Depoe Bay area. Great customer service and absolutely great tasting wine.
