I have tried to eat here or purchase bagels on Sundays to no avail. Today as I was walking by I decided to stop in for a breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee. They had 2 pump pots full of coffee. So to really dig into what I love most about Napoletano is the fact that it's local, has some of…read morethe most down-to-earth, friendly people running the place, should you take time to stop and have a conversation, good coffee and espresso, and hands down, one of, if not the best offering of breakfast sandwiches in Delco available, and I will defend that assessment tooth and nail. When I first stopped in here it was in a whim, and although they do have a selection of whimsical, sweet, dare I say, ridiculous and sweet coffee beverages, they were able to make me a traditional Italian macchiato. I had been unable to find a good, even passable REAL macchiato anywhere, and they delivered in spectacular fashion. Not only was the drink silky, strong, and small, it was made with outstanding Italian roasted espresso that has a different character than the standard, heavier-roasted American palate has come to be used to. This alone would have been enough for me to return time and time again when I was in the area, but after getting breakfast sandwich on a whim, this instantly became a weekly stop; more than that, a destination. Fast forward a few years and the initial attraction of coffee, sandwich, and friendly staff has transformed into a beautiful relationship where I can easily walk in, everyone knows me before I am all the way through the door, and even knowing my idiosyncrasies, are still excited to see me and listen to me prattle on about whatever might be the story of the day. The time spent here has given me the opportunity to try nearly everything on the menu and try every drink available. Including all the dry goods, pasta for sale, frozen trays of delicious Italian staples, and more. I am not one to just stick to the things I know I enjoy as I am always on a journey for something interesting and exciting, so whenever something shows up I am getting that rather than something in my "comfort zone". This has led to me traditionally losing interest or finding that the quality of a place declines for myself over time, especially multiple years. Not the case here at Napoletano, it has only done the exact opposite and gotten much more rewarding and somehow even more delicious and embracing of people and everyone who comes through the door. This brings me to my most recent food adventures into the menu here, the newest additions for the most part, the added amazing hoagie list. I have had two. The first I tried was the Gondolier, which I was enamored with for weeks. I had been there too early to order lunch time and time again, and then FINALLY, one day it was about time for lunch to be available and Michelle, the wonderful woman running the front of house and so much more, was able to get me this sandwich just a bit early. It had it all....outstanding bread, roasted red peppers, seriously premium meats, both standard deli and cured. However, something just missed the mark for me. I couldn't believe it. I don't know what and I don't know why. I was immediately disappointed, likely because I had hyped this up in my head for so long and I have come to expect so much from Napoletano, I simply couldn't believe that this wasn't the best hoagie I had ever enjoyed. That fact has eaten at me for at least a month now, but today that all changed, and is possibly why I finally found my voice to put all my thoughts together an write this after so many years. During my visit to say hello today, I realized it was once again right around the time where I could order sandwiches. I toyed with the thought of the cutlet sandwiches or even the Cuban which is amazing, but after going around and around and around talking to everyone working about this and that, I finally decided on another hoagie; the Sicilian. Kris, another of my favorite people along with Fanny (who was on vacation) helped me inch toward this one based on my description of my whole previous experience, and tbh is sandwich is so interestingly unique. Topped with lemon and orange zest, it doesn't sound like it would work, but once you take your first bite, you begin to examine your entire existence. Why have you never had a specialty Italian hoagie topped with citrus zest??? The question has been running through my head all day since lunch, and I still cannot understand why I haven't been enjoying something like this my entire life. So many years lost of amazing sandwich experiences.....this sandwich was so divine, despite looking slightly barren and strange, that it blew apart my entire disappointment I had been holding since the gondolier. I will absolutely try the other four in the list. I would have anyway, but this definitely took that mission off of life support and put it front and center. There are so many reasons to go to Napoletano. I could spend another thirty paragraphs writing about what is great about this place, the people, the drinks, the space, all of it. But instead of doing that, you should just go here. Even if you're not close, and enjoy!

I haven't visited for a few years now because my last experience was repulsive…read more Perhaps it was a coincidence but I received very odd treatment (abnormal from all my prior experiences) here when we asked non-white friends to join us for lunch. We were seated in the corner by the cookie jars, 3 kids among us. The waitress for some reason could not hear my non-white friend even though she was perfectly audible to me, and I was audible to the waitress (not speaking any louder than my friend). Nonetheless, my friend had to repeat herself more than once, and I felt her guard go up that the treatment was odd. My protective instinct for them (and my child) went up as well. The food took an extremely long time but that can happen at lunch because they are very busy. What was odd was that my friend was given an order of fries she never asked for--I heard her order THREE TIMES and somehow the waitress still did not get it right. I will add that the waitress was extremely preoccupied with a male customer, flirting, giggling and acting like a high schooler (she was 20-something). I get being giddy in a new relationship but it was completely distracting her from her job and was totally inappropriate especially considering all the mistakes she was making. We also had to wait extremely long periods between being given water, ketchup (again, my friend's request), our bill, etc. Worst part, the bill was extremely high and included about $15 more than what we ordered. We were charged for the fries she mistakenly (on purpose?) gave us, and the wrong sandwiches were on there too. You know what I did? I did the "nice white girl" thing and obediently made no fuss and left a tip that waitress never deserved. It's sad I was confused and overwhelmed by the sh!tty treatment and in denial about what happened. Yes, I should have made a complaint then and there but they'd already made us late for the arboretum, plus when you treat people passive aggressively, and you make 3 kids between 1 and 5 have to sit for an hour of the slowest incompetent service ever, I had to just pay and leave because I was not going to make a scene in front of kids and the place was slammed with people so I'd have had to further wait for someone to be available. However I did attempt to call them multiple times in the days after but no one picked up during lunch hours when I called. They have no email address I could find to show my receipt and as the days passed I had a million other things to do as the mom of a young child so that's how it goes when a business has no email in the 21st Century. We were treated like crap and overcharged. I realized all my prior visits were with my family or extended family, all white people. Childhood visits were with a white friend who lives nearby, and her white family. You can see in photos and reviews I have been to this place many times going back to my childhood, but I haven't returned since and I will never go back. I got a good sense of how it feels when "odd" passive aggressive behavior seems to happen around non-white people, and yes it could be honest mistakes (a series of them aimed at my non-white friend) or it could be discriminatory. It could be that one waitress's attitude is irreflective of the establishment but this is what happened at this establishment, and the result is we were treated deplorably and I have no reason to ever return. They owe me an overcharge of $15 plus the unfairly high tip I left that horrible waitress!

Being around since the beginning, I have seen the place grow and change, and what they have created is quite wonderful and something the community truly loves. However, along with that, the new feel does leave me longing for the days of the small space that we would frequent every single Friday morning for coffee and a delicious handcrafted breakfast, in a place that remembered who we were and was small enough it was easy to customize our meal. While this hasn't necessarily changed, the owner, a wonderfully nice man who still remembers my family and I, is simply doing what a business owner should: strive to grow that business and provide the best service and experience available. I cannot fault the Brickhaus for any of that at all, and I highly recommend that everyone visit here, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings when there is live music. Particularly when the recurring jazz trio is there who really blows it out of the water. All that being said, I have noticed that in the ensuing years since their expansion, the quality of the experience and the food has declined far beyond what I used to live about this place. The coffee and drinks are still as good as they ever were, but the overall food and service quality of the 'restaurant' portion. Has changed, and has resulted in my infrequency of visits. I do highly recommend the the rösti potatoes and always whatever specials they are running, but some of my go-to favorites like the avocado toast simply are not what they used to be and are not worth it. I still love it here but I simply cannot recommend it as I would have years ago.
