Portobello Cafe - Papardelle Pasta Special

The atmosphere of the ambulance these people are from Italy and their food shows it. It is…read moremouthwatering out of this world. . You feel like you're actually in Italy it's so nice in there. Everybody should go to this place and experience it.. 5 Yumms...!!!! Family owned. This is one of them restaurants. I passed 1 million times. It's been here for a long time and I never ate there until this past weekend.

I met a helpful sommelier whose parents emigrated from Italy to Philadelphia. Looking for the…read moreinside scoop, I asked what his favorite Italian restaurant is. Portobello Cafe. So we went! The restaurant has a charming and casual vibe. Both gentlemen tending the floor are from Italy, adding an air of authenticity. You can choose to sit outdoors -- I really like the way the patio is arranged --or in the cozy dining room. Once seated, you're brought a plate of roasted peppers and a basket of hard rolls. I sprinkled olive oil and grated salt on the plate, which proved a good idea with the peppers and rolls. There were a number of appetizer specials, but we went with a basic Caesar salad. One order, pre-apportioned in the kitchen, was perfect for the two of us. I ordered branzino as an entree T, linguini Pescatore. The whole fish is brought out and fileted tableside. While I took a photo, it was just one unflattering shot of the head (which I'm not posting.) The branzino was mild and flakey, good, though the seasoning didn't break through the skin rendering it a little bland. Excellent grilled potatoes and vegetables completed my dinner. My husband's linguini was delish; while the pasta isn't made in house, it tasted like it could be, served al dente, of course. The tomato sauce was spicy enough to bring the dish over the top. Portobello is byob. (Another Yelper mentioned an $8 corkage fee, but unless they forgot to charge us, they disbanded the policy.) After our meal, with takeout box packed -- there was a lot of fish -- we were offered amaretto as a digestif. A nice touch! The restaurant isn't all that convenient to where we live but we enjoyed dinner enough to warrant a repeat visit. Next time I'll try something Italian. Or maybe salmon, which looked pretty good. Reservations suggested, particularly on weekends.

Testa Rossa - Glen Mills

We ended up at Testa Rossa on a Saturday afternoon after dropping off one of the girls for a…read morebirthday party at SkyZone. Dinner was only a few hours off, but a bit too soon for a full lunch. However, the menu got the best of us and we ended up ordering a bunch of little things which ended up being far too much, but definitely in a good way. The space is quirky with a wonderful neo-mod design that is very eye catching and makes great use of the old diner aesthetic of the previous space, while improving upon it a hundredfold by making it much classier but not over the top. It does feel decidedly like a 1960's Italian locale out of a Roger Moore or Sean Connery era Bond film; to great effect. Another thing I loved about the design is that it feels compact but not small. I dislike huge restaurants, and love the family owned vibe, and this space occupies the very nice Goldilocks zone between being 'just right'. The food was good and I will get to that, but what really made our experience was our outstanding, amazing, dare I say...... legendary server, Alice. She was just flat out hands down an all around pro with a great attitude, a kind smile, and a wonderful personality who knew exactly how to keep a table like ours happy, engaged, and ready to come back again. This is something that I feel has been missing in so many places since Covid occurred, and encountering someone as great as Alice just really made the whole time there a notch above. Finally getting to the food, which was obviously delicious, there was nothing that was absolutely mind blowing, but all of it was very unique and extremely well prepared and flavorful. I did like that not everything was tomato-centric on the menu and there was a vast variety of different dishes that match the uniqueness of the space. The highlight for me was the carrot soup, not an every day item, that was nice and heavy with cumin. Brilliant flavors but not too forward, which followed our caprese dip that was an outstanding take on a dish that everyone loves, but is overdone at this point. The bread they are serving here is insanely good; either lightly toasted or grilled quickly on a flat grill, I am not sure, but slathered with high quality olive oil and it's perfectly soft, crispy, crusty, and chewy all at the same time. Testa Rossa is definitely worth checking out, and we only went for a few small plates with the intention of it being a snack. Apparently the family has more than one location, although I am not sure where the others are. If you are near Glen Mills, it is definitely worth the trip to stop in here and give them a try. Oh, and don't forget to pair your food with the super cool espresso martini tower, because you get to choose the flavors, but I'm still sticking with classic as my favorite!

Wow!!! Sad...sad...sad…read more.. Pick a place to celebrate your daughter's 30th birthday and what a disappointment... Service the absolute worst- Bar very slow...and needs to purchase more rocks glasses... It shouldn't take 10 minutes to get a glass of wine!! Busy? Hire more f**ing people... Order pizza well done came out under cooked Ordered lasagna extra hot!!! Came out warm... I will say they did make another pizza and didn't charge us for either the pizza or lasagna Although all the while as we are stuck with half the table eating and half waiting for their food had no choice but to order another round of mediocre Pinot Grigio (they sell by the glass but not by the bottle...) asked our server about buying a bottle which she NEVER found out for us!!! Manager tried but honestly not much you can do at the point he showed up... Restaurant business is tough- been there done that but come on this was pretty basic stuff that was 100% screwed up!!! Personally NEVER AGAIN
