My kids have been coming here for 3 years now . They have an excellent kids class on Tuesday/Thursday and Saturday all the instructors there are amazing and the kids love going . Character building | Excellent for kids We've been coming here for about 2 months now and recommend this place. Our 5 yr old daughter officially enrolled in their 5-12yr old class, once a week, and loves it! Backstory: We checked out this place a few weeks before our daughter turned 5. She is always very nervous and hesitant to try anything new, especially when it's something she does on her own without us in the picture. So, this was a big step for us. Within the first month of showing up, she went from watching off of the mat to sitting on the mat and eventually interacting with other kids with the help of one of the teacher's daughters. It was a long transition for our daughter, but everyone in the class are so welcoming and friendly. The teachers, including the owner, are so understanding. They never pressured her/us to join. They made the transition easier and more fun to the point where we signed up for 1 class a week and bought her a gi about 2 months later. In her words, "I like this place. I like jiu-jitsu." She is the youngest and smallest kid in this class. I'm excited to see how far she goes here! I like how Joe runs the class. They warm up, talk about the word of the month (i.e. respect), learn a new move, practice this new move with others, and practice the guard. For this specific class, they offer it 3 days a week: Tuesdays/Thursdays at 5pm and Saturdays at 9am. Parking is on the street or in the private lot. I booked a class online the day before, got the confirmation email and everything just to show up 15 minutes early and have the building be completely dark. I did not receive a phone call or a email stating that it would be canceled. It took alot out of me to face my anxiety and to come and try out the class just to be let down as soon as I got here. If I could give this gym a negative 5 I would. Owner is a complete scam artist. Basically, he said we could cancel anytime without charge when we signed up. Went a single time and ended up having to move. He wouldn't cancel our account and proceeded to charge us for additional months that I wasn't even in town for. At the time I didn't fight it but if it was today I would sue his ass. He also requires you to write a review for his gym so most of the reviews about his gym I am sure are sugar coated. The gym at the time I went to in 2011 was called "The Source Academy". I am sure he changed that due to his poor reputation and reviews. Anyways, don't trust Joseph Heller! I have been training here since 2016 and this place has been a God send. My only regret is not starting here sooner. I'd be here everyday if I could. Everybody is super nice and friendly and willing to help out to develop a deeper understanding of all the nuances in every move and the principles behind them. Since I started training here I've become not only more confident in myself but also a much more patient and understanding husband, father and friend. Especially, over the past year dealing with the stresses of the pandemic training here has helped me keep in solid physical and mental shape. No matter what life decides to throw at me the stresses of it seem to unravel and wash away after class and my mind is always so much more clear. I couldn't recommend this place more! read more

DO NOT GO HERE! The people here are scam artists. They tell you you get a free month then when you show up they get your card info for "insurance" and even if you quit after the 4th week and ask for cancellation they won't do it. They will just tell you that you didn't cancel in time and then threaten a whole year payment(150$ a month) If this happened to you I recommend just getting a new card/bank account cuz it's pretty ridiculous. They also act like purple belts should be running classes when in all honestly only black belts should. It's really disappointing this placed turned out so crappy and crooked but there's nothing you can do about shitty people. Both my son and I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at River City Warriors. This is his first year in the kids program and my 4th year on the mat. I also take muay Thai classes here which is an amazing kickboxing work-out. Great community and amazing instruction under the Pedro Sauer Association. The women's BJJ classes and coed BJJ classes are equally welcoming and gentle. This is not your ground and pound type of MMA gym, so if that is what you are looking for this will not be your fit. RCW is definitely more technical and martial art specific. While there are people within this community who successfully train for MMA fights, RCW specializes in specific arts and focusses on authentic techniques in each art: Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Philipino Martial arts vs a general MMA class. We are on year four and we still love it. The coaches are great people and good at what they do. Some days it can get a bit crowded. But they have enough coaches to make sure everyone gets proper attention. Not only the physical but also the mental part of the training has become an important part of my sons life. Not the best equipment available. Most are used and sweaty from the previous class. Best to bring your own. Classes are taught with great enthusiasm and encouraging instructors. Place is large and have a variety of equipment to train with. I like how they rotate intermediate and beginner muy thai students that way you can get experience with different levels. I did come here on a groupon deal. The value was worth it but like some of the other reviews I was approached with a 1 year contract. The real value is a lot more than the groupon deal. For the equipment quality I'd say it's not worth it for the full value. For that price I'd expect some usable equipment besides smelly, sweaty, old gloves and pads available for class. I'm checking out other martial arts gyms to see if they are of this quality before I update my review. read more

The Source is one of the best martial arts studios I have ever trained in. I like the fact that you can train in several disciplines, especially with today's excitement about mixed martial arts. I am a brown belt in Kenpo Karate and was in Portland for a few days. My daughter may go to U of Portland so we were visiting the University and checking out the area as well. Also want to make sure I find her a good studio to train in if she ends up at U of Portland. Just by luck they have a Sunday Kenpo class so it was awesome for me. Even though every studio teaches the forms and techniques a bit differently, you still notice the level of movement and the intensity regardless. Theirs was great. If I lived in Portland I would train here for sure. Probably would also do Jiu Jitsu as it seems that this is an area they really have well covered and mixing Kenpo with ground fighting is really a great combination. One good thing about martial arts is once you start to train in one discipline, you get the urge to train in another. So here, at The Source, I can see myself also mixing in Bruce Lee's famous Jeet Kune Do. It's pretty tough to find anyone with proficiency in all of these styles but I found it here. For my daughter I am more interested in the great kickboxing program because I think it focuses more on fighting then on forms so you can progress a bit quicker. Either way, they do a great job here and I am glad I was able to take some classes and experience and learn from the great instructors. read more

I think what distinguishes The Source from other gyms of its kind is the community the gym builds and the energy the owners create. The Source offers an array of classes with flexible schedules and billing options, as well as specialized workshops, and lecture series (such has holistic nutrition and herbal medicine). But beyond the normal offerings this gym hosts EPIC social events that broaden your world view and feed your soul- such as the community concert that occurred in December of 2011 featuring Medicine for the People- a Portland based indie folk band (http://www.medicine4thepeople.org/). On top of the offerings and events the owners of this gym are awesome people. Joseph Heller volunteers to teach martial arts at elementary schools where funding cuts caused the schools to discontinue their own P.E. programs. Audrey Younkin is a powerhouse of success training daily in the art of Muay Thai, working full-time as a research professional, and teaching at The Source. Both Joe and Audrey personally invest themselves in the successes of their students, this you can feel. The energy at this gym is unique and inspiring! I recently started training here and Im pleased with what Ive seen so far. I followed my professor Anibal Lobo ( who also has a studio in Gresham) and was impressed with the layout and training options. You can look on there website and basically read anything I could say. Except to Richie N. you say the instructor is a purple belt like its a bad thing. Did you roll with him? Hes a purple belt under Anibal Lobo who is a Rickson Gracie and Pedro Sauer black belt as well as The Sources current BJJ instructor.Respect. To Tyler..... So does it bother you that a woman is training Muay Thai or that its the owners wife? I doubt you actually padded up and sparred with her cause your still trash talking, I dont believe going to any training facility once qualifies you as someone whos opinion matters. The facility has dirt on the floor and smells like an unclean locker room. The gloves and pads are not washed and soaked with many people's sweat. There are no drinking fountains, and you must bring your own water. I was once paired with someone who was visibly sick, and I came down with the flu the next day. Most Muy Thai classes are taught by the owner's wife. The other 5-star rating for this was written by the owner, Joseph Heller. It is against the Yelp policy an example of how he uses unethical business practices. I was introduced to the Source Academy via an impulsive GroupOn purchase for 3 lessons. During the second lesson he asked me to "step in to my office please", and gave me a hard sell to sign up for a year-long contract. I simply wanted to come in once a week for a workout, and explained that I would potentially move to Chicago for work in a few months and he expressed repeatedly that the contract was just a formality, I could quit any time, but needed to sign it anyway. Two months later I did accept an offer to relocate to Chicago and called to quit. I moved, and kept getting billed. I kept calling until he blocked my number and I had to call from other numbers. I emailed written notices to quit. I eventually had to contact my bank to get them to block future charges and attempt to reverse unauthorized ones. He disputed those even. It is a huge time drain to prevent this ongoing theft. I'm going out of my way now to prevent this from happening from other people. I'd advice any potential customers to not trust Joseph Keller. He is a small and dishonorable man. Do not give him your bank information. There are lots of other 'real' martial arts facilities in Portland - I would recommend trying anything other than The Source Academy. Total scam. read more

My experience with the staff was initially great. They took a personal interest in me, my goals and made sure to follow-up via email to make sure I was doing ok. Life got busy and I wasn't able to make it to the gym as much and ultimately had to cancel my membership. While I'd never question their passion for martial arts, their business practices (i.e. doing what they say they would do in a timely manner) left me disappointed and sad because I really liked them. I joined The Source Academy, in late November. I have really enjoyed going, the staff is friendly, and outgoing. They care about your goals and want to help you reach them. Audrey is very good at what she does, and I have learned a lot from her. Joe is kind and also checks in to see how things are going. Victoria is kind and calls to make sure you are okay when you do not show up, to keep you on task. Bobby does an awesome job at the Strength and Sweat class, he is kind and encouraging. Mike on Saturdays for Boxing is knowledgeable and takes time to show you new skills. I would recommend folks to try the Source as it has helped me. This is a wonderful school! I took my first two classes there this week (JKD and Muay Thai) and was thoroughly impressed by the instructors and fellow students. Everyone was very welcoming. Coming from a fairly extensive background of Krav Maga, I was new to JKD (had dabbled in MT in the past), and didn't know what to expect. The owner, Joe (Who happened to be the instructor for JKD), did a fantastic job of leading the class and explained/performed the techniques in such a way that my past training translated into this new style VERY easily! MT was just as much fun as I remembered from my past training. And my partner in class was very kind and VERY GOOD! I could not have hoped for a better experience. Worst establishment ever attended for any type of martial arts! They don't set rules for open sparring ahead of time, but expect you to know them or you may be threatened to be hit and kicked out of the establishment by the instructor. You would think the instructor would be knowledgeable about other types of martial arts (not required, I know) at least enough to understand the difference between a block and a hit.. but he didn't... The instructor accused my fiance of hitting during sparring when he used a blocking move from wing chun (which he verified was allowed prior to the class starting). The instructor then told him he either needed to fight him or get out. When agreed to sparring the instructor came from behind and took a sneak move to get him into an immediate head lock. The instructor then proceeded to in front of the class ask if everyone wants to see him hit my fiance and then kicked my fiance out. The instructor never asked what happened only assumed. This continued even when other members in the class told him that my fiance didn't try to hit the other person. My fiance called and spoke with the owner. He basically said he appreciated my fiance calling and talking to him about it but that he was ultimately going to take the instructors side. I sure would never want my child to attend a school like this, where the instructor is quick to jump to accusations and then physically threatens a costumer. read more

I didn't like their financial dealing. The owner signed me up for 1 year contract. While signing the contract they said its just a matter of paper work. After 6 months of class when I tried to leave, they didn't follow through their words. I end up paying full 1 year but not doing 6 months of class. So beware when you sign the contract. This was a good lesson for me. I am not going to trust anyone by their word of mouth from now on. I have also seen they are giving away $$ gift cards for giving good reviews to some site to the students. Now the training part: training wise they are ok. I used to do the kickboxing. For beginners its good. Most of the people who trains here are beginners. They(except for 2-3 people in kickboxing) hardly competes. read more

I don't want to have to do this, but for those looking to join this school, I would warn you to be careful. Having recently moved to Portland, my boyfriend wanted to get back into martial arts and convinced me to give it a try too. We went to check out a few different gyms in the area, including River City Warriors. The owner's high pressure sales tactics made us both feel uncomfortable. When my boyfriend later went back to the gym to attend one of the classes that the owner had said could be paid for on a drop-in basis for a $10 fee, he was told that he wasn't a good fit for the school, and that he should look for another school. We were both in disbelief that he should be banned from the school just because he wasn't comfortable signing paperwork to start a one-month trial membership, as we were still looking at other gyms. There are other good schools in the area that didn't try to push us into a membership like this. I can't say anything bad about the instruction or the other students here, and everyone has to make their own decision where they want to train, but for us, this was not the right place. read more

I've been training Brazilian Jiujitsu and Kali (Filipino martial arts) at RCW and couldn't be happier with the school. The instructors are technical and teach carefully, and it shows when you train with the students. Coach Joseph Heller, the owner, is an incredible martial artist and really works to bring the skill level of each of his students up. Professor Anibal Lobo, BJJ black-belt, leads the BJJ class and is incredibly detail oriented and keeps it real. I feel blessed to have found such an excellent and affordable place to train. read more
