We all live close but there are four other cafes within quick walking distance whose coffee is as good or (much) better. Until this morning I just wanted to support the neighborhood cafe and the people who work there. After today, no more. I can spend my money at Cafe Liv, Hyperion, Sweetwaters and/or Vertex since this business does not seem to want or appreciate my business. The coffee and the service and the turnover of staff keeps getting worse and worse. The thousand-plus dollars I have spent each year for the past eight years can be much better spent at any of the other cafes that will only add a few minutes to my walk to get to (yes I love and frequent my local cafes!). Thanks for (not) appreciating my business y'all. Jerri

Do not get beans here. Do not let them grind them. I like to support local shops when I am…read moretraveling and I have my own espresso maker. I asked for espresso grind. When I opened the bag I could tell right away it was too fine. I attempted to pull a shot, but got nothing. It was most definitely Turkish grind. Since I could do nothing with the bag, I went back to explain this was ground too fine. The same individual was there and reacted with condensation, saying this is indeed espresso grind, which is basically Turkish, and he doesn't know what kind of maker I have so he cannot dial it in. I said I have never had this problem in the years I have done this at other shops. He acted like he could do nothing for me, so when I pressed that I can do nothing with these beans I spent money on, he got on the phone. At one point I heard him say, "Yes, I tried to explain that to her." As if I didn't know what I was talking about. I was finally given the option to get a bag of beans without having them ground, which is all I really wanted. I can grind the beans in my own grinder at home. I went down the street and bought a bag of beans there. I asked for espresso grind and mentioned that the last place gave me Turkish. She had to look up the appropriate setting, but she got it perfect. When I got home and opened the bag of beans from Black Iron, the beans were oily and smelled burnt. My coffee tasted that way, too. I was rather shocked because the latter I had ordered with my purchase was not bad. I had to use them up slowly by masking the bad taste with my go-to beans.

Finding a triple espresso with enough cream that was gentle to my stomach was a delight and comparable to other barista-made coffee drinks but at a better price. What a contrast to the weak, tasteless coffee at most restaurants establishments, especially hotel coffee. I was delighted to find that right on Grand River in Brighton is our own hometown Scooters. Since July, I have frequented it and have found polite, kind baristas so I have bought gift cards for my family so they would try Scooters too. It is a quick drive through and well worth the stop!

Give me a brownie and I'm happy to top it with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, walnuts, and even a good cocktail cherry. That said, I love matcha. Thick, green, creamy, and grassy. I enjoy lighter styled traditional matcha too, even poured over ice. Perhaps even with a splash of oat milk. But then again, perhaps not. Really I am less keen on matcha flavored with syrups or espresso flavored with pretty much anything. Great coffee and traditional matcha I believe can be elevated with accompaniments, like an amazing buttery croissant or a sweet and chewy mochi. It's important to know going in that Hazel is beloved by the Instagram set who enjoy the visual appeal of layered and flavored drinks with bright, bold, and contrasting colors. And good for them. Those folks deserve to have a cafe that serves their needs. Perhaps one day I'll have a craving for a $10 drink with cloud foam piped on top as well. And on that day, I'll be very glad that Hazel exists. And I have to give props to Hazel for doing what they do the hard way. They make their syrups in house. They take care in crafting their drinks. They are very customer centric. The owners are charming and very hands on. The space they have created is warm and inviting -- as the kids say these days, it's a vibe. Their success, business acumen, and sound financial management is impressive. The bar for really good coffee in Ann Arbor keeps on going up. Hazel has definitely carved out a niche for themselves. I had high hopes when looking at the IG feed before they opened that the shop would focus on the classics, but I'm old and terrible at social media... and texting. I'm tragically bad at short form, and I do not understand memes one little bit. Even still, I will give them props for pulling the best espresso shot on Packard which is no small feat considering the beloved local businesses that are their direct competition.
