    Hmmm... let's see.

Conveniently located Chula Vista's Third Ave district. Smack dab between 5 and 805. Momma, hubby, and I ran quite a few errands earlier in the morning and it was time to sit down and enjoy a good breakfast. It was time to add a new spot on our breakfast list. Parking meters line up the front of Rise and Dine (which is across the street from Kalaveras). We pulled into the last open spot at the curb and had many attempts of swiping our card to pay the meter. Each attempt failed- and even though QR codes are slapped on meter posts- we tend to skip the QR codes as payment options due to scams. So, thankfully we had enough quarters available to pay for an hour. 2 hour max. The dining room is huge! When you walk in the doors- there are tables one each side that can fit 10 people. 4 top cushioned booths along the south wall. 2 top and 4 top tables elsewhere. I absolutely love how the aisle's are wide enough to give patrons and wait staff more than enough room to roam. One of my go to breakfast picks is corned beef hash. Some pictures are available on the menu. Even though the corned beef hash is canned (I grew up on this)- Rise and Dine makes great portions on their breakfast plates. It was crispy in every bite. My medium eggs were good. Crispy edges on my whites. Wish the yolks weren't super runny. I always request shredded cheese on my breakfast potatoes. And I must say- the potatoes weren't heavy in grease. Just perfect. Each potato chunk was golden and crispy. Even my shredded cheese! It's been forever since I had pancakes. And the 2 pancake option was a great size and serving. Flavored creamers and variety of jellies on table tops. Even on a Friday morning, it was a good sized crowd. Staff always checked on us and had fresh hot coffee available. There are tables in the rear- that can accommodate bigger groups also. Very casual decor.

Friendly staff, clean establishment. The food was hot, fresh and delicious! Will definitely come again. I had the Denver Omelette with Home fries and Banana Peanut Butter pancakes. My only complaint is the wait staff is either overbooked or not attentive. I consistently had to ask for coffee refills. They happily obliged, but you have to keep asking.

I came here on a Thursday afternoon for some brunch. The server was extremely sweet and my food came out in less than 10 minutes since it wasn't busy. I enjoyed my seven dollar mimosa and my waffle with a side of Chilaquiles, which is really great as they have a side to offer. To be honest, these were some of the best I've had in a long time and the sauce was extremely savory. It's a pretty big restaurant so I'm sure they get busy on the weekends and have enough tables for families.

The ambiance is simple with minimal decor--TVs on every wall and large speakers setting a casual, no-frills vibe. It's spacious and laid-back. You order and pay at the counter, old-school style with handwritten tickets, which adds a touch of charm. The food came out fast, hearty, and overall delicious. We ordered the Waffle Deluxe and added whipped cream and strawberries. When it arrived missing the toppings, the waitress fixed it right away--quick and easy. The Gyro Breakfast Plate came with four large slices of gyro meat, hash browns, and eggs. The gyro was flavorful, but the hash browns were a bit soft. Personally, I prefer mine crispy on the outside with a soft, fluffy inside. The star of the meal was the Deluxe French Toast Plate--four thick slices of fresh-dipped, flavor-packed perfection. Hands down, the best French toast I've had at a restaurant. The eggs were scrambled just right--not runny, not rubbery--and the bacon was perfectly crispy. Service was efficient. Not overly friendly, but not rude either--just straight to the point and handled business well. And the prices? On point and worth every penny. You get quality food without breaking the bank.

Country Fried Steak and El Grande Plato

My wife had the country fried steak and I had a couple bites from it. We both really enjoyed it. Had a fresh flavor to it. Just wish it was a little crispier but other than that, really good fried steak. And the eggs and potatoes were also very tasty. I ordered the Grande Plato. Substituted the rice and beans for more chilaquiles. The chilaquiles lacked flavor and needed a spicier salsa. But the crisp was actually good. The steak I ordered medium but was well done. But still have great seasoning on the steak. The eggs were over easy, and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the plate overall. The service was great as everyone was welcoming and our waiter was super friendly and attentive. Plenty of seating and gives a classic diner vibe. Will definitely visit again if in the area.

Bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast. It was good.

I had some time to kill before an appointment so I stopped here for breakfast. In the past I had seen some specials painted on the window and I thought I'd try it out. I was looking for a breakfast special. The price range for breakfast is $14-$15. I asked the server if they had any breakfast specials and she said, "What do you mean?" I explained but she didn't understand. It wasn't a language issue, she just didn't know what a breakfast special was. I ordered bacon, eggs, and hash browns. The eggs were scrambled easy, like I asked, and they were quite good. I got 3 pieces of bacon which tasted great. The hash browns were a little greasy, but I liked them. The sourdough toast was good. Breakfast cost me about $20 with a hot drink, before the tip. I would have liked a smaller portion for a lower price. I only ate 1/2 the meal because I eat a small breakfast. Now I have to take my leftovers to my appointment or leave them. I hear that Dennys is getting pricey. If I had to choose between here and Dennys I would probably choose Rise and Dine.

Scramble w/cheese -Microwaved & burned- Terrible Meat- Horrible Hash brown- good Toast- good Cook - Terrible skill

Today September 17, 2025 I came in and ordered takeout of 2 country fried steak. Food was terrible. The lady that took my orders was very nice and polite but when I opened my to go box and saw the food you could tell the cook that made it must not like his job and/or is terrible at being a cook. The food was terrible, from presentation to taste, the cook added the cheese and microwaved it (no issue with microwaving but it burned the cheese and even the egg was not cooked all the way, yes I understand its a to-go but please see the pic I've added) Taste was also terrible. The meat and gravy I could get past the 2nd bite, I truly tried. The hash browns was good and so were the toast but for $45 I expected better that this slop. The texture of the food and taste is horrendous. The cook whom made these had no love for his job or establishment. The lady that took my order was kind. The ambiance was okay. I love supporting local shops & will continue to support others, but not this one.

A quaint dinner, out of any town USA. Went on Friday at 9am. Plenty of seating. Two waitstaff were attentive. The interior earth toned cushioned booths provided seating for cozy tables with well stocked amenities including Tabasco, Chalula and Tapatio. Clearly a go to for seniors, my wife and I were the youngest people there (mid forties) until a heavyset, shaved head Latino man wearing a Trump shirt walked in with a mousey woman in a sweater. Folks here spoke in hushed and gravely tones while sedate fall piano played against muted television sets playing the local FOX affiliate. The waitress was polite and not unpleasant. She was consistent on keeping out bottomless coffees topped off with a dark house blend. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered the pastrami breakfast with home fries, scrambled eggs and biscuits and gravy as I was in the mood for a fatty, stick to your ribs kind of breakfast. My wife ordered steak and eggs with English muffin which came heavily soaked with melted butter. The meal was definitely satisfactory. Certainly, it was a good amount of food for the price. It's surrounded by multiple other restaurants. Some of which have very long wait times. Would definitely eat here again especially if looking for quick quiet and a good value.

ADA Laws for allowing service animals into restaurants.
    Melody M.

I was very disappointed and SO UPSET that I almost had an episode when we went to this restaurants today. The girl at the front saw I had a dog. She didn't seat us, instead she walked to the back kitchen and a lady came out with her. The lady asked if it was a service dog and I replied yes. My service dog even had his leash (vest) that stated "Service Animal / Do Not Separate From Handler" which in fact we don't even have to have on him. The lady then asked for "papers" . I told her that there were no papers for service dogs and that with someone who has a disability, we are protected under the ADA guidelines for having a service animal. Yet, she still refused us because she said a customer gave them a 1 star review because she allowed another service dog in the restaurant before. My husband and I told her that she should not be refusing customers who have service animals because another customer had given them a 1 star review, rather respond to that review with the ADA law. She said she knew the law for allowing service animals, but clearly she did not. This is the FIRST time I had to deal with such ignorance and being lied to about knowing the ADA law. As a CA restaurant, PLEASE know your ADA laws for people with disabilities. This is an update / answer to the owner's response: Sir / Madam, I know you are trying to protect your business and reputation. Thank you for your response and apology to my review, but what you were told by your manager is not what happened. She did NOT ask me what my service dog's task were AT ALL! She asked me if it was a service dog and I replied "yes" THEN she asked me for "papers". When I told her we do not have papers and that we are protected by the ADA regulations and guidelines, is when she said SORRY I can't let you in. When I asked her for what reason, she then proceeded to tell us the story of another disabled person giving your restaurant a 1 star review. By this time we walked outside and I was trying to explain to her that she should not be treating us like that for having a service animal and she said sorry. She ONLY changed her mind when my husband went back in and spoke with her again. You are correct, she did change her mind and said to come in, by this time I was already upset and told my husband that I wouldn't want to support a business that treated me this way, although my disability is unseen, I felt discriminated against and there are many other restaurants that are more welcoming. In regard to my dog having his "service animal" vest, he sure was wearing one, as mentioned it was a vest leash (a sleeve that goes on his leash) due to his size. We travel all around the country and frequently eat at restaurants with my service dog, I always have his vest leash when entering a restaurant to distinguish him as a service animal; we follow all of the rules and regulations from restaurants, to Disneyland, Nascar, airplanes, etc. IF your manager would have asked me the 2nd question of what my service animal's task were, I would have answered her like I always do when asked by establishments and everything would have been fine.

We asked for additional hot sauce - their salsas were not spicy enough for us. But as you read my other reviews, we have a MAJOR tolerance for spice. So what's not spicy for us can be spicy for others. Our total was $51 which was deff reasonable for everything we got. Definitely a cute hidden gem to try if you're in the area!
