The collective had arranged for one of the larger rooms so they could have some audience members, the full company and be able to stream it online as it happened. Spatially speaking they had a reasonable stage that held everyone involved. A full four piece band, some singers and some traditional Japanese instrument players and a grand piano. To the other side of the room was the soundboard and a setup of chairs. They had about 20 or so chairs to sit in and the audience would be a mix of invited friends, the media and the other members of the collective. Overall a nice group. The sound in this room was wonderful and you heard everything nice and clear and it was quite enjoyable. The space itself was clean and had a number of bathrooms and a WiFi signal to login to. I asked the friendly staffer what else the venue had and they said there were numerous smaller rooms like phone booths almost that people use to practice singing only or their voiceover and podcast work. Good idea. While I don't know if I will ever be there again I enjoyed my time here and thing the talented people who are reading this Yelp should look into the place in case it serves their needs.

I arranged rental time at Michiko in late December 2024, for a studio upright piano that turned out…read morewas not in good condition. I believe this was a Kawai. Despite claims the staff made about technicians routinely servicing their pianos, this instrument was not in tune and had not been reguated so the action had what piano technicians call "lost motion," which means there is space between the end of keys and the moving parts of the action. This creates a sloppy feeling in the keys, and thus a sub-standard playing experience. Lost motion is easily corrected and this lasts for a long time so either the cause is poor technician skill or the Michiko does not pay enough to maintain this instrument. Sound from other nearby rehearsal studios was a distraction.

I generally practice drums solo, and I've gotten sick of commuting an hour from central Brooklyn to dirty studios with crappy equipment. Battalion's equipment sounds solid, and the place is easy to access (plus close to Whole Foods, as an added bonus!). I can't wait to come back. My only push would be to have a bell or something at the front desk. No one was there when I arrived last time, and I had to sit and wait for ten minutes, which cut into my practice slot. I've only been once, though, so not sure if this was just bad timing!

I was working with a group who were rehearsing a new musical and the company and creative team spanned about 12 people. We used Studio 1 which was sizable. The room is clean and very organized. They have a number of folding chairs on hand for your needs and music stands. They only ask that you fold up the chairs once you are done. There are higher ceilings and some buffer wall sound proofing but I can say that the singers were heard nice and clear across the day. They provide a piano in the studios but I didn't notice amplifiers or drums so it might not be that type of space. From the halls I mostly heard singing productions being worked out so if that is what you need this is the place. There is a complimentary WiFi for patrons and snacks are available for a meager sum. I found the staff friendly and can add that the bathrooms are also nice and clean which many might find to be a plus. I know I do. These rooms seem perfect for readings and play run throughs with the piano. Happy creating.

There's a nice waiting area by the front desk and the bathrooms are clean and comfortable. The midtown location is a great central meeting spot, especially when you have cast members flung across all boroughs. Pricing is extremely reasonable compared to similar studios in the area. Also, there was another rehearsal going on next door to ours, and we couldn't hear each other at all. Sunlight feels very safe in terms of Covid-19 guidelines: right now everyone is required to wear a mask in public spaces, and they check vaccine verification at the front desk. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a space to hold a rehearsal or class.
