I was fortunate enough not to have to shop around before finding this practice studio, and thanks to this place I'll never have to. I joined a band rehearsing here and found out quickly this was not merely an establishment, but an established community of ambitious, talented, musically-oriented and often incredibly interesting artists. Came into play with one band, and now play with 2 others formed with friends made between jams at King Killer. The intermingling & cool collaborative vibe of my dreams is present here. The shows put on here are always fun, if not just fun then amazing, and the sound has gotten better and better with improvements in equipment and expertise over time. The first time I played this stage we sounded great, and I've played at least 4 times on the stage since, and the new house sub is my bass' best friend. My band started playing here when it was basically a fledgling business, it's grown vastly with members and amenities since, and the growth never appears to cease. Right now I am losing productive time at work because I can't stop praising this place and thinking about when I'll be traveling into Brooklyn to enjoy the surroundings again. I drive an hour to get there from home, and it's been worth every second I suffer through Long Island traffic. In all honesty: ALL HAIL KING KILLER. I've only been here for a couple of months, and the care that the owners show was apparent from the second I walked in the place. This is a studio for serious musicians who don't want to deal with the "typical" rehearsal studio nonsense (i.e. crappy attitudes from people you don't know, tiny rooms, etc.). Everyone I've met has been really nice. Dave, Sol and Sarah have set up a real scene. Well, not a "scene," necessarily... they recognize how difficult and competitive the NYC music scene can be, and they stress to everyone that it's hard enough without having to deal with that competitive attitude where you practice. They want you to feel comfortable there so you can get down to the creative side of things. The climate control is nice, and it WORKS, and there's almost always someone down in the lounge willing to spare a cigarette or just hang out. The stage is amazing, and that lift thing they have for bringing gear up to your room from the garage is a life- (and back-) saver. Honestly, the place feels more like an extended family than just a bunch of people thrown together. Sure, some people keep to themselves, but that's cool, too. We all have work to do! I've been in 3 or 4 different monthly rehearsal spots, and none of them even come close to how awesome this place is. Oh yeah - the bathroom is generally really clean, which may not be important to everyone, but it is to me. It's a good indicator of how well things are run. As a born and raised New York musician, I've been taken for a ride and ripped off by so many studios it drives me insane. Most of 'em are corporate businesses who know nothing about music and only want to make the most amount of money possible off guys who just want a decent place to rehearse their tunes. That's fine, but definitely not for me (or 99% of the people I know). King Killer is an amazing rehearsal space run by musicians for musicians. This means among many things its owners have a true understanding that most musicians in NYC don't have endless bank accounts. Its a very laid-back and unpretentious atmosphere that includes rented studios at affordable prices. The staff are always willing to help you out as best they can. My band has recorded in our rehearsal room several times, one of which Dave came through and let us borrow some mic stands. Additionally, you can really pop in any night of the week and find your fellow musicians and friends hanging in the common area watching a DVD, listening to music or just having a few beers. The building also has an awesome stage with a working PA and lighting system where the tenants put on shows. In conclusion, in a world full of Kardashians, King Killer is the definitely the Kim of them all. It's not just a rehearsal space--it's a community. read more

The only downside to King Killer Studios is that the MTA shut down the Smith/9th Street stop for a year, so until June, tenants have to walk an extra block from the 4th Ave R/G/F trains. Other than that, it's the best rehearsal space I've played in ever. The rooms are unusually large, the rents are very reasonable, and there is no ego or attitude when dealing with the owners or other tenants. One of the best features is the lounge which features a stage, so that tenants can have showcases. Best of all is the general vibe. Unlike every other space I've played in, the bands get a long with each other, and due to the large common area, the studio is very conducive to collaboration and mutual support. The studio breeds a unity and comradery that is unheard of anywhere else. Bands go to each other's shows, feature on each other's recordings, and generally encourage and help each other out along their respective paths. If you're used to NYC rehearsal studios, King Killer will blow your mind. The rates are good, the rooms are very large, and everyone there is cool, but not too cool. I have now been at King Killer for just over 4 years, and all I can say is that I'm so proud to have been a part of this place almost from the very beginning! A lot has changed; new bands, new people, lots of upgrades to the space in general (it's obvious that Dave cares a lot about the place). I just heard that they're adding a bunch of new rooms in January, which is awesome. It's always so nice to see a business that works really hard to satisfy their clientele doing well! The community that has evolved in this place is beyond words. I find myself dropping by even if I don't have rehearsal just to see if some of the friends that I've made here are around and hanging out, and maybe even down to jam. Long story short: I will be a member of this place for as long as I live in NYC, whether or not I have an actual band that I'm rehearsing with. It's one of my favorite places to be in all of the city, and that's saying a lot. I really do love it here. read more

Best rehearsal space I've ever used, bar none. Equipment lift? Check. Even better, a one-car garage (for loading & unloading, not parking). Unheard of! It's also cleaner than any rehearsal space I've used. But here's where they go above & beyond. The bathroom is always fully stocked with paper towels and soap. And as the other reviewer notes, there's a vending machine with strings, picks, and beer! I've used a variety of different spaces around NYC for about 15 years, and this one is the best by far. It would seemingly never even occur to the other places to care about the details that these guys do. And that's what makes it so much better an experience. The owners are great and easy to deal with. The bands are mostly quite friendly and helpful. King Killer is a real community where musicians can create, collaborate, and chill. Parking on the street is easy, the practice rooms are all ample and functional, loading in and out is very convenient, and you can get in on the shows they host. The shows they host are usually pretty great. Cheap, laid-back, and most of the bands have serious talent. As long as you don't mind a little dankness ("But Moe, the dank"), it's always a sick party. read more

After making the rounds with various studios in all the boroughs, I can say with a confident sigh of relief that King Killer has become my second home. Not only are the owners talented and admirable musicians, they are the most down to earth, feel good people I've dealt with both professionally and creatively.
