The course is really pretty overall, but it's definitely not an easy one. We teed off around 12:40 on Saturday and didn't finish until 6:45... over 6 hours. The pace was painfully slow, the course felt pretty tight, and we even had balls coming over from the neighboring holes. The greens were also in pretty bad shape. They really need marshals out there more often to keep things moving and manage the pace of play. read more

The course was very slow today, no marshals in sight to speed up play. Took us 5 hours and 15 minutes to play 18. The group in front of us was pathetic. Greens were in poor shape, fairways grass very thin. Sand traps were like playing in concrete. I've played this course at least 25 times before, today was very Afterwards we hit the bar for drinks and food, no server for 10 minutes, eventually we got some beers and were told cook is on break, no food. Tables were dirty and dishes on tables not cleaned. After 35 minutes we got food, buffalo wraps were good, but lacked enough chicken, my partner's onion rings looked like they had been cooked twice. I loved the layout, challenging and narrow but still forgivable based on your ability to scramble. Price was nice and course was in great shape, fairly flat and would like to walk next time. The one thing that crushed me was the pace. It was almost a 5.5 hour round.... Due to the group in front of us... taking 10+ mins on the greens, marking balls after lip outs and putting everything in... my only hope is that they played for 100 bucks a hole.. because anything less wouldn't be worth all the time they wasted. Rio Hondo is a solid choice golf course. Green conditions are pretty nice. I visited on a Tuesday right after a tournament, there were carts everywhere in the entrance but I suppose to be expected. The greens are honestly the highlight here because they are pretty nice and well maintained. While some recent reviews warned about a glacial pace of play, things moved along at a decent clip during my round. You do have to be careful with the layout since some fairways cross back toward each other quite closely. My golf cart actually took a direct hit from a stray ball, so please remember to yell fore if there's even a slightest chance if its going to come near others. The staff is generally friendly and the facilities feel clean. Even though the rates are a bit higher than other courses around the overall quality makes it a fair value for the experience. read more

Played the back 9 with my brother and cousin this morning. My cousin is a beginner, yet we all understand golf etiquette. We let two groups go ahead of us early in the round as my cousin took a little more time, though not interrupting pace between groups. Cart assistance guy came up to us midway and said we can't be skipping between holes, which we weren't doing. He was extremely rude and unprofessional in his approach and explanation. He came back again on the next hole and told us "hey two more things" and said we need to do our best to keep up with the group ahead of us, which we had been, and also said we should be finished by now considering it's the back 9. We were well within the appropriate playing time range. Safe to say, the entire rest of the game was affected because of this guy's arrogance in approaching us. He kept circling back to us multiple times as well. We won't be here anymore. Much better courses nearby with professional and respectful staff. read more

This has been my "home course" since I started playing golf in 2008. It has alway played slow in big part because of the back-to-back par 3's. It has always been more expensive than comperable course. But the prices have been creeping up with little ROI for the consumer. A large bucket of balls at the range is now $17 and the balls are probably the same ones I hit back in 2008. They are TERRIBLE. They bought new golf carts and the green fees went through the roof. You would have guessed that it was GPS/Bluetooth carts but they are not. I hope they pay their employees well because, as a REGULAR customer, I dont see where the increse in fees is going. read more

If I could give 10 stars, I would. Today, Andy (aka Anderson, aka the Patron Saint of Walk-Ons) pulled off what I thought was impossible: he got me on at Rio Hondo on a completely booked day -- and changed my entire game in the process. Let me set the scene: I stroll in, desperate to play, knowing full well the tee sheet is slammed. I ask Andy if there's any chance at all of getting out. He doesn't just shrug or give me the usual "sorry, booked." Nope. This man takes my number, tells me to go hit a large bucket slowly, and gives me the realest advice I've heard in a while: "You might get on early, but pace yourself in case it takes longer." Then -- this is where it gets legendary -- he actually calls me to give me the green light. I miss the call. So what does Andy do? He gets on the loudspeaker. I somehow miss that too. So what does he do next? This man comes out onto the range and finds me chipping. Like a golf guardian angel. Not only does he let me know I'm up in 30 minutes, he notices my feet are too far apart while chipping and corrects my form. Then he gives me the number of a teaching pro. And get this -- thanks to that tiny adjustment? I saved at least FOUR STROKES today. Today, for the first time in four years, I shot in the 70s. And I have Andy to thank for it. Honestly, I'm considering naming my next child after him. Andy if it's a boy. Anderson if it's a girl. Yes, it's that serious. Rio Hondo -- give this man a raise. Give him a statue. Give him a cart with flames down the side. I came here hoping for a round -- I left with a better swing, a lower score, and a story I'll be telling forever. Thank you, Andy. The worst course to play in the afternoon. Groups stacking up on each other, called the pro shop for the ambassador to keep the pace of play going and they have not done anything at all. This is a great course for the price they charge, which is a rarity these days, but there are a couple huge negatives that are really holding it back from being one of the top public courses in Los Angeles County. The most egregious is pace of play. It's inexcusable that a Thursday morning round should go over five hours, without a marshall in sight. And I know there was a marshall, because I saw him driving around the clubhouse when I arrived. The tee boxes were also a disaster. Dead and patchy grass, dirt, and uneven ground on pretty much every hole from the blue tees. I don't need perfection, but you should do better than that. read more

Sorry, but its mediocre week after MDW. I played this course in Downey w/ a couple of business associates. The price is reasonable, and the holes are challenging. However, there are several reasons why I can't give more than 3 Stars. First of all, the first two holes are basically the same hole. In addition, on the first nine holes you have back to back par 5's and par 3's. Most course designers space the variety of holes out so you hit different clubs on each hole: That is what makes the course interesting. Secondarily, the fairways have lousy grass. You are not rewarded for hitting your tee shot straight. Lastly, the pace of play is slow. They did not pair two twosomes ahead of us. It made more sense to pair them so we were not waiting on every hole. Don't get me wrong: This course is much better vs Montebello. Nonetheless, there are some nuances that were not to my liking. read more

Definitely a favorite of our "retiree golf group" as we are always sure to keep this course in our rotation. It's always well manicured and while play can be a bit slow, (that $hit doesn't bother me personally), to us it's worth it. Pretty much everyone there that we deal with are kind, helpful and courteous. From the pro shop to the cart girls, to the employees in the 19th, all these peeps are always pleasant... with one exception. The little jack hole that seemingly "used to" retrieve the carts you turn in when you finish a round. If he had been my kid and I saw him disrespect and treat others / elders like that, he would be seeing stars from a pavement prone position if you get my drift. But, after a few complaints about the "attitude" he shared with golfers, they either reassigned him or let the little fecker go "elsewhere". Not that we had anything to do with it, but let it be known that if he was as disrespectful to us as he was, I seriously doubt that we were alone in treatment we received... Bottom line, a little common courtesy and application of the golden rule can go a long way. read more

Just finished playing a round with a 6:20am tee time on a Thursday. It's a great challenging course that is well kept for a public course. The fairways are lush and the greens roll true. Great 2020 activity. My husband mostly goes for the driving range and there's almost always space available. They did a little better socially distancing at the beginning of the pandemic - now they don't require that spots be left open between golfers. Usually not a problem because it's not too busy but my husband did feel a little more comfortable when they used to have this extra precaution in place. read more

Attended a friend's wedding here last week and was suitably impressed. The wedding coordinator (I forget her name) was superbly professional and efficient. As far as I know everything went according to the bride's wishes. I heard no complaints from her. But the thing is, the food was incredible. I've had chicken at banquet dinners before, and I've had salmon. But I have never had prime rib. They served all three, plus scalloped potatoes, four kinds of salad and freshest tastiest rolls I've had in a long time. Excellent! read more

A diamond in the rough! Played here today, 04/20/2018. My expectations were low and I walked away feeling positive. Thus, the full set of stars. To be honest, the only reason I found out about Rio Hondo Golf Course was through the power of social media. I was checking out Savannah Vilaubi's IG and saw she played/practiced here a couple of times. Promise, I wasn't stalking her but it would be nice to meet her though. A few months has passed, we assembled the crew, and got a super early morning tee time at Rio Hondo. Plenty of parking at 6:15am and a not so crowded scene. Our tee time was for 6:36am but when we paid, the starter said you guys are up after the guys teeing off. So, we scurried to the first tee box, eye wax, muscles and bones still stiff, and coffee in tow. I honestly did not know what to expect from this golf course. All I knew was that the course was situated in a random part of town. I can't recall the last time I played golf around these parts. There were plenty reviews on the course and most were positive. Being in the middle of the city, I wasn't too worried about slope issues. I did see quite a few rolling mounds though. What makes this course challenging is the narrowness of the fairways. There's not too much room for error as there are trees lined up on the outer edges of the rough. A few holes offer relief in case you hook or slice your shots, meaning you'll be sitting on a different hole's fairway and have a chance to hit your ball back into play. Be weary of the sand traps. There are plenty of it. Whether it be fairway bunkers or green side bunkers, there's plenty of opportunities throughout the course for you to build sand castles. I did find myself in some. I noticed that a lot of the pins were placed right behind a sand trap, so you have to dial in your approach shot. Surprisingly, there's a good amount of water hazards too! Are you feeling thirsty? About 9 to 10+ holes offer you the option to send your golf ball into the drink. Feel free to splash around but please leave the local ducks and birds alone. What I really liked about Rio Hondo besides it being well manicured through and through were their greens. They weren't slick fast but they are definitely one of the top inner-city greens in my opinion. They run true, smooth, and quick. Be careful to not over cook your putts or you may find yourself putting for a birdie and turning it into a bogey. I really enjoyed putting the greens today. Kudos to the maintenance. Rio Hondo is a well maintained course with wonderful greens that run true. I do believe they allow fivesomes so be mindful of that if you are trying to play speed golf to catch an important meeting after your round. Lots of people do choose to walk the course too so that may slow down the pace of play. Our threesome this morning was out of the parking lot by 10:40am; it was a fast and peaceful day for the most part. The course can be challenging if you're having issues with keeping the ball in the middle. Be mindful of the hazards! Rio Hondo, please keep up your great status and keeping the course in mint condition. I'll definitely come back to play and hopefully meet Savannah V. one day! read more

This is a tough course but its also beautiful. My wife and I take lessons here. The staff is really great and the lessons are great. Always treated decently and every thing is really clean. We have met a lot of great people here both locally and from other cities. Not quite for beginners but don't be afraid to come out and try it. Both patrons and staff are always willing to give a few pointers, people helping people learn. Glad to have this as our home golf course. Thank you Rio Hondo Gold! read more
