The Golf course is in great shape. This is the 2nd week in a row that I showed and needed to use the restroom and there wasn't any toilet paper in any of the bathroom stalls. There wasn't even paper towels. I spoke to the pro shop and was told they don't handle the restrooms. Something about a separate company that's in charge of the food and beverage. I find this unacceptable for a business open to the public. Just beware and a warning to handle your business at home or the Chevron down the street read more

Course is very narrow. Seems squeezed into not enough room. Weird rule of no wetting of towel inside but theres a festy water bucket by the first tee if you want to catch something. Pace is terrible. Waiting about 6 minutes to take every shot. They have back to back 3's on the front so you expect some slowdown but its been the entire round. Greens are bumpy n a lot of the cups have damaged lips. Full 5 hour round. Saw a marshal twice but he must have not felt like working today. Wont play here again. read more

My golfing experience in the SoCal is fairly limited, but amongst the public/municipal courses, this was one of the most beautiful, challenging, expensive, challenging, well maintained...and did i say challenging courses i've played at. This is the best public golf course within 25 miles of dtla. You'll pay on the weekend, but on a weekday it's a deal. Could the beverage cart be out a bit more? Sure. David you were an amazing sport thanks for being very helpful both days I came! (mentioned that the beverage cart wasn't working) Could the tee boxes be slightly better? Yes? Will you play a 3-4 hour round? Absolutely not. The only people I know that don't like this course are 15+ handicappers. If you can't keep the ball in play then this course will be very crappy for you, because the slope is 130 from the whites. Restaurant upstairs was decent although the menu can be a bit modified and probably add some soup or ribs on there. Giovanna you were a great host! My only real complaint is that the greens have been SO SLOW lately and the player etiquette has been terrible. Fix your ball marks and take bunkers. Some people do try to make putts and hit it relatively close. read more

Booked a Tee Time, arrived and there was a group of 8 on the 1st Tee and they were 20 minutes behind! Then a group of 12 was after! I was told I had to wait behind 20 ppl playing by myself! When I asked if I can just start in the back 9 I was told no! This course is notorious to overbook tee times and not report them to Golfnow.com and remove it from the website so when you book and see open tee times they actually aren't open! read more

Steve LaBarge is President of S&S LaBarge golf and the Manager of Rio Hondo Golf Course and owner of Rio HondoGolf Shop. . If his name sounds familiar is because he's the one who runs the place and you have seen his name in several of these reviews. He is extremely rude and unprofessional, but guess what? He knows that and he doesn't care. . How do I know this? because when I called him out on it he said that he treats everyone this way and you can tell that's true by the pattern of these reviews. Just look back at the previous pages and you'll see for yourself. . Something is seriously wrong with Rio Hondo for allowing such an individual to treat customers the way he does and the fact that it's being brought up to their attention through these reviews and they don't do anything about it shows you that they don't intend to. I know his name but I prefer not to mention it anymore. I know how tiring and frustrating to work in these times and we appreciate it. Absolutely terrible course. Worst pace of play. Took 7 hours to finish a round. When I proceeded to talk to club house and club PGA Professional they insisted that it wasn't there problem and that if I had a problem with the professional personally, then I can come by and "say it to his face". I am reading some complaints regarding pace of play and overstated control when my experience yesterday was WAY on the other side of the spectrum. I was in a group for the annual Kiwanis golf tournament. I had not played here in five years so I WAS looking forward to it. The weather cooperated and we had a scant group of only 32 participants slated to hack. I believed this would go pretty quick. The problem is the course scheduled another tournament on the same day.....at the SAME TIME. Their contingency was larger so I am sure the course was looking for more money. We started on hole 8 and played through number 18 without a hitch. When we arrive at # 1 we see another group of (6) golfers waiting to tee off ahead of us. What? The foursome that started with us on 8 had already teed off and these guys were jumping in front of us. I noticed they were with the Port of L.A. and they had started on hole 11. These troublemakers should have been much further along. While following these yahoos we witnessed total disrespect to the course, the city and all the other players. Dudes were playing chicken and performing donuts with the golf carts. They were also throwing tee box markers like lawn darts. They were also taking TONS of extra shots, literally and figuratively. Obviously, they had consumed an extreme amount of adult beverages AND we have all been there. The question is, why the disrespect? I did see a few youngsters but there was a middle aged man and a WOMAN in their group. Where was Scott Wally to call the cops and get these dudes escorted off the grounds? We did not even see a Marshall roll through to supervise the goings on. I was so disappointed that I went into the starter's office after we finished to advise that the course was getting abused by various drunkards. What I found was a kid behind the desk not old enough to shave. What was HE supposed to do? The responsibility to oversee both tournaments was non-existent. Sure, there were more seasoned guys there to check everyone in but it was still only 3:30 to 4:00PM. Did they not believe that something could pop off between two differing interests? I never expected that Rio Hondo would allow Norwalk par-three course behavior. Heck, I should have left my Mountain Dew T-shirt on while sneaking in barrels of alcohol. I would have fit right in. Then again, we were representing the Kiwanis Club and all of their history and decorum. Oh, and I am not even a member. I was an invitee. Have the standards been lowered? read more

I played here yesterday. The rating is based on combination of course layout, condition, pace of play and value (I played twilight with cart for $32 - finished all 18 with plenty of time left). I really enjoyed the round as thought the course layout was interesting and challenging enough. The condition of the course was very good as well. Although I got grouped with a double, the three of us caught up to the five-some in front of us. The pace of play was not too bad though. It's a pet peeve of mine that courses allow five-somes, but given how much courses are struggling these days, I understand the business reasons for why courses do it. I would definitely look forward to playing here again. read more

Horrible!! Management "Scotty" is so unprofessional and not receptive to any issues regarding this establishment. Pace of play is so slow you have to set 7 hours aside to get a round of golf in. Save your time and money and go to any other because this is quite possibly the worst. read more

In four hours we got through 12 holes. Tee time was at 1:48. The back to back par 3 was horrible because there was literally 4 parties of four waiting to tee off and we had to wait 25 minutes to tee. I haven't seen a single Marshal around so people were jumping holes to maximize their play time. Get a Marshal. If you want to finish, don't come here. A lot of walkers. I enjoy the layout and it isn't a tough course at all. But the pace is terrible. Save your money. read more

I would have given this place 5 stars if they didn't allow fivesomes on the course. Any course that allows fivesomes just basically cheapens the place. It slows it down for EVERYONE on the course, so shame on you Rio Hondo for allowing this. The course is in decent shape. With the groupon deal they are offering, you really can't beat it, but on the flipside, I think the groupon cheapened the place. They have an awesome driving range, although you have to hit off mats. And the putting greens are really nice. I felt the greens were deceivingly quick here. it feels like it wouldn't roll so fast, but especially on these downhill putts, it's blazing fast even though it doesn't look or feel like it. The par3's here are all really long. I ended up pulling out my driver on one of the par 3's cause it was 235 yards! The course plays pretty tight and narrow. Gotta be pretty accurate off the tee to have a chance at making the green in two. Otherwise, you'll be playing from the trees. The par 5's are not very long. A good drive makes the green reachable in two. I've got some more groupons to this place so I'll be heading back soon. I just really wish they got rid of the fivesomes. Our round took about 5 hours on a Monday which was not cool. read more

Came for a group golfing event, course was great but bar service was anything but great, 90 minute wait for food after ordering, ran out of French fries, only one bar staff serving so I felt bad for her but she was abrasive in her manner of providing no service whatsoever. Disappointed. read more

I played twilight today with a friend from 5-7pm. With the amount of daylight we had, we were able to finish 11 holes. The Good. Nice landscape for a public course, characterized by many small hills and undulations. The twilight green fee is affordable ($20 per person with cart if you pay and register online). After 5pm, the course was sparsely populated and we were able to play unrushed. The grass was in relative good condition. The Bad. The course tends to be narrow, so it is important to hit straight. :) Bottom Line. I would play here again. read more

Very local, down to earth, fancy enough for your business or smaller milestone - like retirement - parties. Have been here a couple other times (for business functions) and both waiter service and food were good. They served the standard fare: warm bread rolls, salad with a fruity vinaigrette, chicken breast with hollandaise, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, cheesecake to end the meal. I do appreciate real tablecloths and napkins for the service, clean china, seats that are still upholstered and sturdy. (Don't you just hate when other places use those folding seats with tattered upholstery? I'm a big girl and I worry about crashing in those :) ) Spacious parking, but I was slightly concerned since the driving range was feet away. I personally loved this course. It's not too far of a drive for me and some friends. The course is arrow which is challenging when you're always battling a slice. I still thoroughly enjoyed my round. We were a twosome following a 5 some. Needless to say we caught that group many times. Eventually after we had put some pressure on them they let us play through. It took a couple holes for them to let us go though. We quickly caught the next twosome in front of us and were back to hurry up and wait mode. After reading other reviews I see that pace has been an issue for most people on this course. It seems like the Marshall should drive around more and gauge how everyone is doing. We didn't see the Marshall at all. We still played our round in 3:40 which I was very impressed with since I play in the city sometimes and we are lucky to finish in 4:30. I'm definitely going to be back to this course and look forward to learning the course more and more. Hopefully groups will let me play through as needed and keep their pace when needed. Everyone always hates having to feel the pressure of the group behind you. read more

A fine course, open to the public. I have only played here 3 times, always as part of a fund-raising tournament. Ample parking. The driving range is 2 double decked, you always hit from mats. Putting green is in good condition but nothing special. The pro shop is amply stocked with a variety of the essentials. You could show up in a 3 piece suit and no gear and buy everything from shoes, socks, clothes, clubs, balls, markers, etc. The snack bar is, happily, not overpriced! At some courses I have paid $5 for a bottle of water. Here I ordered a breakfast burrito and water. I was expecting to pay about 10 bucks but was surprised when it was only $6! A bonus was the burrito was excellent and ample sized! The clubhouse is clean, well maintained with clean restrooms. The course itself is well maintained, clearly laid out. It is challenging but not overly so. read more

This place is very well maintained especially if you compare it to the goat pasture a mile or two away. Very narrow but you can make some good shots from adjoining fairways. Not bad for $50 but wouldn't pay much more than that. Drive 30 miles in any direction and play some more interesting courses but good if you live within 15 miles. I've been here before to play a few rounds of golf and the course is great! Last Wednesday night I came with my boys (ages 9 & 6) to get some work in on the range and putting green. Rob at the pro shop was awesome! He made my sons and I feel very welcome and is a great asset to the facility. read more

I WAS RACIALLY PROFILED AND IT HURTS! I never thought I'd say this but WHITE PRIVILEGE still exists. We were kicked out of Rio Hondo Golf Course for making someone claiming that they felt "threatened". That's what the young white Marshall said. I simply stated to the young white group of golfers "TO HAVE PROPER GOLF ETIQUETTE" and not to pick up other players golf balls. My group and who ever complained, as per Marshall, was kicked out because he didn't want to get in the middle of it and threatened to call the police. So our group complied and on the way back to the pro shop to return our golf carts, the group that complained about us was still playing! WOW! And when one in my group confronted the pro shop employee, they couldn't provide a legitimate answer, shrugged his shoulders and just ignored us after. Never felt so belittled ever! This is a good course. I like playing here. I just wish they had better management to handle this kind of situation. And to treat every golfer equally, no matter what color of skin they have or how they "look"! read more

The starter in the pro shop is a rude, miserable, unprofessional jerk! Unfortunately, I don't know his name he's tall with brown hair. In the past, I've witnessed him being rude to a customer, and today he was rude to me. I'm a customer who pays money to golf, eat and drink at this course, I expect gratitude and appreciation from this idiot as an employee. Fortunately, the gentleman named Keith who works in the course's restaurant, Hackers Bar and Grill is pleasant and very professional. I've been coming here for years and I enjoy the challenging nature of the narrow fairways. I admire the scenic beauty. I love the greens. The course is neatly trimmed. The maintenance crew is always respectful with noise. The range attendant is a kind man who helped me locate a fallen headcover. The cart girl proudly wears a smile. I am not being facetious. I will not return unless management changes their policy of pace of play and overall niceness to their guests. I am talking specifically about, Scott Wally and Steve LaBarge. One may reason that they must enforce the pace of play because of slow play complaints. That is fine. I'm a single handicap and I play my best when I am quick and decisive. I don't like being approached with daunting body language. I don't like stern tones of voices and passive aggressive nature. "Gentlemen! I'm going to have to ask you to speed it up (Jaws wide open), the group in front of you is already putting (Chuckle)." This was our first berating by Scott on hole 5. As a group, we all made a concerted effort to play ready golf and hurry. The second time he heckled us was at the turn while my colleague was buying our drinks. He requested us to speed it up obviously, in such a rude undertone, that I almost felt empathetic to him. How could one be so miserable? I thought. I reasoned, "People were in our fairway on 2 and 3 so our tee shots were delayed. There is a fivesome behind us and they have never reached us. We are playing with an elderly man and his wife. I believe we are playing fast enough." Then a barrage of interrogative questions flew out of his mouth in child-like-tantrum behavior. "If you are playing fast enough, then why is the group two holes ahead of you?" Scott accused. "They are Men's Club members. They know the course" I replied. "What time did you tee off?!" Scott said while raising his voice. "7:35" I replied. "That's 2 hours and 20." Scott admonished. That's when I glanced at my phone and saw that it was actually 9:53. And I finished the ninth hole by 9:50 which put us at 2:15. I always thought a normal round during peak hours was 4:30. Scott continued, "That means a full round would put you at 4:40. What time do you think is a good time to finish? 4:30? Most groups could finish by 4:20. Do you want me to follow you on every hole and time you? Anyways, I'm not here for an argument. I'm telling you, you are slow. And since you're not going to make an attempt to pick it up, how about I just refund your money?" I stood motionless, reserved a bit. All I could muster up was a defensive last cry, "We are attempting! Its just the way you said it. You came at us all wrong." Scott pouted, "What are you talking about? I have been nothing short of professional. Forget it, I'm not here to argue. I'm going inside to figure something out," as he stormed into the starters window. I was in question whether or not I was allowed to continue to play. My colleague and I persisted to forget what happened, move on, and enjoy the rest of our morning. At hole 13, when our drives paralleled the drives of the group now way back behind us on the other fairway, I asked the gentlemen, "Did the Marshall talk to you guys?" Two golfers from the "Brown" fivesome asked, "Why, is he harassing you? Man, he do that to us every week. He didn't today which we are very surprised. Very surprised. You guys are good. You're not playing slow." We proceeded to finish our round at ease and finished at 4 hours and 10 minutes. I was proud to beat the printed pace of play written on the scorecard which says 4:11 for the final hole. We, then asked, to speak to Scott's superior and was directed to Steve LaBarge. We had stated the facts with politeness. We received a review of the pace of play policy. LaBarge: "Even though you guys can play faster, you are responsible as a group keeping up with the group ahead. Time does not matter. You teed off at 7:35. 4:10 is still too slow." Me: "Even with a lady in our group and an elderly man?" LaBarge: "Yes. They shouldn't even be playing at that time." What a preposterous statement.
