I love this salon! I see Jackie, who was recommended to me by a friend. She is incredible. Definitely the best cuts and color I have had since moving to NYC 10 years ago, and not crazy prices either. She is so talented, my hair is now so easy to maintain, and easy to style. The rest of the staff are friendly, and Ringo is the best, such a character and really fun. There are just some things a modern superhero cannot go without before fighting crime one villain at a time: 1. A Skin-tight Bodysuit 2. A Mask to conceal your identity 3. Superpowers or Super Fighting Skills 4. An awesome haircut Ringo can give you #4, although I found that with an awesome haircut comes awesome superpowers. In this case, that would be the power of attraction. I've been to Sally H's, Studio 303, Arrojo, you name it. I've wasted my money there to get a haircut more talented than Supercuts but about the same quality as Bumble and Bumble, and with the HEAD hairdressers too. And then came Ringo... Even in my hectic crimefighting schedule, Ringo can fit me in any timeslot except Mondays and sometimes Sundays. I always come 10 minutes past my appointed time because I have been there at least 6 other times and he always runs 10 minutes late working on his last client. That is fine. The wait is well worth it, as he never finishes his job unless it is PERFECT for him and YOU. Once seated, you just need to tell him what look you are going for and he will do the rest, snipping away as silently as a ninja or chirping about interesting neighborhood happenings. That is good, as a superheroine needs to know what's up. If you suggest a haircut that will not flatter you, he will be brutally honest and ask if you are on drugs. He will make sure you know how pathetic you will look if you proceed with said silly haircut suggestion. Brutally honest hairdressers are hard to come by these days, and I trust my hair to no one else but Ringo! His method: Scissors and no blades, sometimes using the razor for shorter men's cuts. He is surgical with those scissors and a master of fine lines. He even gets on his knees as he cuts, almost like watching him play twister as he ensures every strand of hair is cut to your liking. His portfolio- look it up, He used to keep a book out on the table but I haven't seen it lately. He is very humble about his extensive globetrotting experiences but he will tell you more if you just ask. His Specialty: Edgy cuts, although he gave me the softest mod 60''s style cut that just looked AMAZING when I wanted a softer look. I still get compliments on it after weeks of growing it out. He works great with all hair types, especially curly hair. If you have thick as a brick hair, you have hope with Ringo. He will chop POUNDS off your mane to make you look human again like he did with me! His price: $120 fixed, maybe cheaper for 15 min quick fixes. Cash only. After reading just 1 review on this site, I tried out Ringo just last night - he was so fun and knew how to fix my coarse, thick and damaged hair. I told him i was getting married in a couple of months and he did a quick updo for me on the spot that I always pictured in my head for my wedding. He did it so fast in 10 seconds and I was amazed, it was that soft, tossed low updo I always wanted... Then he continued to cut my hair with the big day in mind and i could not believe my good fortune to find him working magic on such an important day! So I asked him to be my stylist for the wedding right on the spot. Now I have say that he doesnt like to work on just any style that client may ask for, he tells like it is. Kay Chang has been cutting my hair for maybe five years now? She's amazing. I've never had a bad haircut from her. When I want to try something different she understands and executes it, but mostly I just say "Same as usual" and she works her magic. She really takes care and spends a bit more time on the last stage, getting every detail right, and her perfectionism makes a big difference to the result. Plus: she's really easy-going and fun to chat with--and I'm not a great hairdresser-chat person--and the price is surprisingly low for the level of quality. Yeah, I created a yelp account just to write this review...the cut is that good. Kay at Ringo's (formerly at beehive in brooklyn) cut my hair over 2 months ago and I'm STILL admiring how good it looks (I'm still getting compliments). While I'm sure Kay would love me to book appointments more often, I'm realizing that one cut with Kay is really like 3, because they grow out so well. In fact, she'll even point out the way your cut might morph over the weeks and style with this in mind. The best thing about Kay is that she pays attention to your energy level and the look you're going for. She'll chat with you if you're in the mood, or let you be and get down to the cut if you're feeling mellow. Kay will give you something super-hip you didn't realize you could pull off, but is not going to go asymmetrical on you when you're looking for a trim. And her new spot at Ringo's is the most welcoming salon I've entered in NYC--breezy, light and cozy. Seriously, go to Kay. The best. Reasonable prices. Perfect hair. My stylist K Chang moved here after The Beehive in Brooklyn went seriously downhill (what happened??? I"m still confused.) K has always been great - thorough as all hell with her hair cuts, which she does wet first, then dry - and very wise with her color. Now that she's at Ringo's the experience is even better, because the place is tiny and quiet - there's not even a receptionist so you're not stuck listening to a constant flow of bookings or someone jabber on about something you're not interested in. It's great. I have tried so long to find a great stylist in NYC and K is definitely it. A total professional who performs beyond expectations, but down to earth and interesting to talk to. She has a definite edge, but also legit skills to back it up, and she never, ever rushes the job. It's what it's supposed to be and I'm so grateful I've finally found it. read more

I went to Kay Chang on the recommendation of a coworker. I received a very bad haircut, despite it being pricey. She cut one side of my hair noticeably shorter than the other. I did not realize at the salon because she gave my normally straight hair some curls in the blow out. She also cut my hair shorter than I had asked for, forgot I had asked for bangs, and did not succeed in making a noticeable face frame. Despite talking so much length off, it is surprisingly not much more voluminous than when it was longer. I do not recommend this salon and I certainly do not recommend this stylist. read more

I have difficult, curly hair and high expectations let's say.) Other than John Sahag, to whom I was loyal until his death, I have never had anyone cut my hair with the strategic savvy, precision and combination of art& science that Ringo has. I took my teenage daughter to him and he did wonders for her hair. This guy REALLY knows what he's doing. I followed the amazing Cressa to Ringos Salon. I swear by Cressa. I have curly hair and I found that most hairdressers would give me a cute cut and then 4 weeks latter it was flat and awful. I dont know how she does it but when Cressa gives me a cut, it looks great and lasts for five months! She cuts it in such a way that it grows into itself so well. THIS PLACE IS THE BEST. I went to Ringo when I first got all of my hair cut off (went from below-the-shoulder to a pixie cut.) He was amazing. A year went by (because sometimes I can't afford it--even though it is BEYOND worth it when you can--and also I'm kind of lazy) and I went back in preparation for my headshots. Ringo nailed it. And i went to his colorist hoping to go from YEARS of box-dye red/brown to blonde. My natural color is blonde. I was in there for FOUR HOURS and she was SO patient with the process, charged me a reasonable price, and was super friendly the whole time. I ended up calling the next day to get the tone adjusted, and she was very sweet, I thought I wanted to go darker and she put her professional foot down and said "bad idea" but did adjust the tone and now my short hair is lovely and blonde and yes, of course, a little dry, but that's what olive oil and deep conditioning is for. Ringo's is a wonderful salon with a wonderful staff that will tell you when what you want will look bad and make you look absolutely beautiful. I could not recommend them more. And, considering NYC prices, it's really not expensive. It's perfectly reasonable. Cheap, even, if you see what magic they work. Plus the atmosphere is awesome and they play cool music and give you constant magazines and books to keep you from getting bored if you've got a long process ahead of you. Again, amazingly talented people. If you have a "so-and-so" stylist that mostly does what you want but nothing is ever special, go here. They are amazing. Any place where the hair-scientist will tell you "I see what you want, but that won't look good on you. Let's do this," and MEANS it, is a place worth going to. read more

On my second trip to Ringo Yip's salon, I arrived at 3:45 for a 4pm appointment and he was finishing another client's hair. At 4, Ringo says to me, "Do you mind if I cut this other person's hair first? It will only take 15 min." I agree to be nice, but I am upset because I have had the appointment for a week. At 4:25 I interrupted his haircut to ask how long he thought mine would take since I had plans for after. He said he could start mine immediately. I sat down in the chair and reminded him that I was in the process of growing out my bangs. He said okay, and THEN CUT 3 INCHES OFF OF MY BANGS. Needless to say, it all went downhill from here. There are plenty of stylists in NYC who won't deliberately ignore what you have requested so don't waste your time with this pompous ass. read more

I followed my stylist from The Beehive in Williamsburg, Kay Chang, here. I've been seeing her for years, she's amazing, and now conveniently located in the LES! When it comes to haircuts she's a perfectionist - she's given me bangs, precision bobs, layers, and every time I've loved the result. She really listens to what you want, but if you go in and tell her to do whatever she thinks will work, the results are also great. My hair is very fine, limp, and damaged from years of processing, but Kay's cuts give me waaaaay more volume and bounce than anyone else I've ever gone to! She also helped me fine the perfect shade of strawberry-blonde - I had been going to colorists for YEARS asking them for the same thing, and she's the first to actually get it right! I've stuck with her color concoction for over a year now, which is a record for me and a hair color. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of haircut. And the salon is very cool too - laid back, cozy, and comfortable. I can't say enough - Kay is awesome! read more
