I like getting my hair cut on a weekday, the atmosphere is more relaxed. AT THE RECEPTIONIST DESK The receptionist is friendly and speaks English. THE MUSIC Track 1 - Lady Gaga Remix Track 2 - Cantonese Music Repeat and Remix..... THE WASH The massage reminded me of Vietnam. Who massages people hair these days for a regular haircut? This place! It's so weird; I'm not used to a head massage from my washer. Neck, ears, temple. Only the fingertips, no nails. (I'm not really into massages, so it didn't really relaxed me... just wondered how long it would take =P) Good job though, kudos for the extra effort! THE CUT My randomly assigned hairstylist was Terry. Terry didn't introduce himself, I found out who he was when I paid. I'm not sure if Terry spoke English either. It was weird, but I just took a chance that he spoke Canto because of the background music. I basically need a trim with bangs and that was communicated though. He doesn't seem much of a conversationalist (I don't mind), but I didn't like that he brought up that I have thin hair. Then again Istana and Cutting Edge have commented about my thin hair (and I haven't been back since). He got my bangs right and trimmed the high layered hair well. Fast, prompt, cordial. RANT So it's thin hair. It's not much to work with. Yea, but if you're a good hairstylist, it shouldn't be an obstacle. And I would know that I have thin hair. Unless it is constructive about my hairstyle at the moment, don't bring up the thin hair. PAYMENT There are tipping jars at the reception desk labeled with each stylist name so that you don't have to hand the tip directly. TL;DR Trendy Canto place. My family and I have been getting our hair cut here for years. Although the mostly deal with Asian clientle, the hairstylists here give a great haircut for anyone(including doing a stellar men's haircut) at a very reasonable price. They have nice selection of english, spanish, and chinese magazines to read. I love when they assume no whities would come around their parts, and give me Latina magazine in Spanish to read- luckily I speak Spanish. The best part of the haircuts has to be the wash. Most people enjoy a thorough professional hair wash now and then- this is the royal treatment of hairwash. The kind you could pay for in a spa. They scrub and scratch and massage you- your scalp never felt this good. They even tenderly take a towel and get any water out of your ears when they are finished. Thats love right there. I've been here a handful of times. why? Because I have the habit of going back to somewhere I'm familiar with, until they have deceived me to an unreasonable measure. My advice is, if you want magic straight or coloring, this place might be an option - nothing else. Let's not forget they are also overpriced, but that's fine if I'm happy with the results. I've gotten 3 haircuts here: twice were trims and the other time was for straight bangs - or what I actually wanted. The trims were really whatever, I didn't expect much, but when I came here to have my bangs cut was the time that I walked out with tears in my eyes and had to clip up my hair for the next two months. The cut was actually for free because it was part of a magic straight+haircut combo, and I'm glad it was because I wouldn't pay a penny for the way my hair was butchered. I showed them a picture of Heidi Klum's blunt bangs and told them I wanted mine like that but a little bit choppier and not as heavy. Next thing you know I'm sitting there with bangs that looked like they were cut by a little kid. But what has been done cannot be undone, I've definitely learned my lesson on never letting another young stylish looking guy cut my hair for me ever again. Came here two other times to get the magic straight, I think they charged me $200+. The results were good and long lasting. I also came here once to dye over the horrible highlights I got at a Korean salon nearby, I was satisfied with the outcome but they charged me $95, and I don't remember seeing that price tag on their little menu by the cashier. I do like that they have personal TVs for each customer so they can watch movies while getting their hair done, except you can never hear anything because the music is too loud. read more

Ask for Kem--my close friend who has impeccable style has been going to him for years (ever since she was a teenager!) I was a bit skeptical since this place is in the middle of Flushing and I had trekked out here for the good eats and to finally try to get a decent haircut (all my cuts in Manhattan for the last 2 years have been horrendous or worse). Kem really took his time (over 2 hours to be more specific) to cut my hair, thin it out (because I have soooo much hair and it weighs me down) and to blow dry it so that I looked totally fabulous. Kem is an older Chinese man with a strange rat's tail, but he could not have been better--and for $34, I'll come to Flushing for a cut any time. ALSO, the wash and conditioning before the cut was unbelievable. They took about 20 minutes or longer for it and they thoroughly massaged my scalp, back of my neck, temples, etc. And the shampoo and conditioner smelled so good, I thought I was in some expensive spa. My head (and whole body to be honest) was so relaxed and felt so good that I felt really great the rest of the day! P.S. Only downside is that the place reeked of cigarette smoke. My favorite hair place. I've been going here since I was in high school (about a decade), and have consistently had great service/cuts. I know $30 bucks seems like a lot compared to their competitors in flushing, but I've had my share of $10 cuts that I might as well have cut myself. I absolutely love getting my hair washed here, which is incredibly thorough yet gentle (no nails as someone else pointed out!!!). Gary is probably the most skilled here (the head stylist and owner). I decided to get a shaggy boy cut one summer on a whim (after browsing a hair magazine they had in the reception area), and he did a fantastic job despite my weird hair texture and nonideal face shape. I've tried other stylists here too, and still had fantastic results. One last thing - their scissors. They keep them nice and sharp. As a person with coarse hair, I find that it's noticable when other places don't keep them as sharp because I get spit ends and if they try to razor some layers in - it hurts! read more

Mehh, I would put this low on the list of 'trendy' asian hair salons of Flushing. Staff does not make any effort to understand what you need. Hair washers think finger nails digging into your scalp and pressing as hard as you can into your temples is some sort of head massage. Requests are fulfilled with sarcasm and blank stares. Hair stylist think chopping away all your hair with thinning shears is the only technique to give you texture, all the while keeping a straight face and dramatic Edward Scissor-hand gestures to hide their inexperience. After telling you that it was a great haircut, the receptionist has no shame in providing you with a business card personally autographed by your so-called stylist (in fresh ball-point ink, really shows how confident the owner is of their staff *eyes rolling*). Perhaps I'm spoiled by Sei in the east village, (and in hindsight, shouldn't have been swayed) but I've been to MUCH better places at this price-range ($28) for a guy's hair cut. If you want thin, choppy hair served with a bit of an attitude then go to this place. If you have trouble finding this, it's right underneath Jade Asian Restaurant, at the door where they keept the trash. read more

I've gotten my hair cut here twice and have never been disappointed! The choice was easy in the end-- I've spent a great deal of my life getting my hair cut by older hairdressers at old fashioned salons for less... but the results have always been lackluster. Thankfully I've taken a chance this new year to revisit an old place that I went to many years ago as a teen trying out side bangs for the first time. With pictures of 2NE1's Park Bom and Ashley Olsen in tow (before you say anything, let me explain), my choppy explanation that I wanted straight blunt bangs like the former and subtle layers like the latter was well received. A shocker in many ways as I came to realized that all those years of heavy slicing with razors in Chinese salons in the name of "layers" have actually done my hair wrong in a major way - does this mean I get to put future mullets to rest? Praise the lord. Also, a hairdresser that checks in with you before they make any sudden moves? An after overview of how to care for and style the new 'do? I know these things are basic but I haven't had much luck in my day, so I would say that I am a very, very happy gal. $28 total excluding tips. Not too shabby considering this is the most I've paid for hair in... 6 years? And worth it. Disappointed to read all the negative reviews. Perhaps my experience was an exception? I've been to this hair salon for years only because of the hair stylist Adam. I am not sure about other stylists though, but I highly recommend Adam. He is such a nice guy. He will listen to my special request like "only cut 1 inch" and "Bang can't be shorter than my nose length", and actually does fulfill my request. I love the big wavy hair he styled for me. He did my hair for my Birthdays which made me a happy Birthday girl. You have to be specific about what kind of hair you want. Bring a picture, give some details. There were times I wasn't specific about what I wanted and the result was not as good as before. I did ask Adam to fix the hair and he was nice and patient about it. Don't ask for Updo though. I don't think they are experienced in Updo. I got an updo for New Year party and it looked horrible. I had to fix the hair myself. They are good in cuts, curl your hair, and hair wash. $28 for shampoo, cut and style. You can't beat that price. read more
