Backdoor Playhouse - The front door to the Backdoor Playhouse.

Backdoor Playhouse

Despite its affiliation with Tennessee Tech University, Backdoor Playhouse has all the attributes…read moreof a fully realized community theater. After seeing their latest production of "Yankee Tavern" (starring local favorites Mark Creter and Caroline Brown), it becomes apparent that there is no better way a Cookeville resident can spend $12 than on a ticket to a culturally relevant and astutely executed production like this one. As soon as you enter the labyrinthine building to head towards the theater, a deep sense of Backdoor Playhouse's history, which continues to inspire their productions today, looms large. The lobby delightfully provides popcorn, candy, soda or coffee, and has a wall full of production photographs and posters spanning several decades. The staff is comprised of eager students, most likely theater artists or fans, whom lend the pre-show experience a youthful, even pleasantly boisterous, energy. If their enthusiasm and earnestness is any indication of the production to follow, then you're in store for a great show. The theater itself is old but comfortable, with tumor-shaped ceiling lights casting a dim glow on the audience until the stage lights come on-- a respectable grid. The stage is a proscenium with a little thrust, and offers plenty in the way of playing space. It is conducive for anything from musicals to two-person plays; sex shows to choir concerts. The heart, stomach, and face of Backdoor Playhouse for all these years, Mark Creter (its Orson Welles-like Artistic director), was acting in this production, and his acting or directing is something any future audience member can expect to see again. His presence onstage was a cross between Philip Seymour Hoffman and a department store Santa Claus, and his habit of emphasizing every single line was grating to my theatrically trained ear. Although his performance skirted the line between acting and stand-up comedy, he is an entertaining ham who will make the most cynical among us at least smirk. The real shining star of this show, however, was Caroline Brown, a young TTU graduate I hope to see in future productions. Her performance was layered in that the gracefulness on the surface of her character progressively lost its battle with the emotional maelstrom beneath. A truly nuanced performer, and a treat to watch. The set pieces were naively rendered, but at least it keeps you in the world. The stage hands were quick and efficent, but the sound design playing underneath the transitions was inconsistent and didn't match the emotional life of the story. I recommend going to a matinee if you're not associated with TTU at all because some of the evening crowds can get a bit rowdy. Several of the audience members for evening shows are students or friends of the performers, and will thus talk back, holler hormonally, assert penis size, or extend their claps. Of course, you can't blame Mark and his Craters for an obstreperous crowd, but be warned. I hope Backdoor is around for a long time. It's a splendid theater and a great value for local entertainment and art. Support your local theater!

Over the years I've heard jokes about "Community Theater" but this is the first time I've ever…read moreactually been to one. It's a unique, but fun, experience. Imagine coming to a friendly strangers house and watching friendly strangers perform a play for you in their living room. That's the Lakewood Theater experience. The better half and I saw 39 Steps, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The players do a wonderful job of telling a story with a bare minimum of props and some pretty decent acting. If you are looking for a Broadway experience, you'll probably be disappointed but if you are looking for some fun in an intimate setting I highly recommend it.

STILL SCRATCHING MY HEAD!…read more Let's be honest, Lakewood Theatre is a very small, very old, slightly neglected theater. HOWEVER, this little theatre really delivered when it came to their recent production of A Christmas Carol. My husband and I were simply bewildered by the talent here as it is a very small town and this venue does not exactly scream: Talent resides here! According to one audience member, the theatre has been around for approximately 30 years but the building is quiet a bit older and this is most evident with the seats. The wooden seats are super narrow and somewhat uncomfortable for those that are fluffier than most. They appear to be at least fifty years old. The production was very professional as was the cast. My husband and I both agreed that this group of talented actors and actresses deserve a larger and much nicer space. Regardless of the venue, the play did not suffer one bit. We enjoyed every aspect of it including the singing and instrumental performances. This play was perfect for the entire family and proudly represented the spirit of Christmas. Lakewood is a great little theatre and worth checking out if you are looking for great plays and performances.

Riverbend Ranch and Retreat

Riverbend Ranch & Retreat was truly the most beautiful place we could have chosen for our wedding…read more We were lucky enough to have the property for the entire wedding weekend, which meant around 60 of our closest friends and family were able to stay on-site with us. That made the entire experience so much more special. It wasn't just one wedding day -- we got an entire weekend together making memories, floating and fishing in the river, fishing at the pond, sitting around the bonfire, and simply enjoying this beautiful place with the people we love most. The cabins were wonderful! Our friends and family had plenty of room, everything was well kept, and the layout made it so easy to get around the property. The bridal suite and groom's cabin were perfect for getting ready while still feeling like we were all part of the same weekend together. The bonfire area down by the river was one of our favorite places to gather, and there is just something so peaceful and beautiful about being down there together. Darren was incredible to work with from beginning to end. He was easygoing, accommodating, helpful, and genuinely cared about making our wedding everything we wanted it to be. He and his wife were both so lovely to talk with and made us feel completely welcome. Cassidy, our day-of coordinator, was an absolute sweetheart and such a huge help throughout the day. One of the things that impressed us most was how beautifully they handled an unexpected change. We had to move our ceremony from the location we originally planned to use, and somehow the new location and setup ended up being more beautiful than anything we could have imagined. When we saw it, we were completely blown away. It honestly felt like it was exactly where we were supposed to get married all along. And we HAVE to mention the fireworks! Darren made sure our wedding fireworks show was absolutely perfect. Seeing the fireworks going off over this beautiful property while celebrating our marriage with everyone we love was one of those moments we will never forget. It was such an incredible way to make an already amazing night feel even more magical, and we are so thankful for the effort he put into making sure it was everything we hoped it would be. What made Riverbend so special wasn't just how stunning the venue was -- it was the experience it gave us. We didn't have to rush through one wedding day and say goodbye. We got an entire weekend surrounded by our people. We got to watch our families and friends relax, laugh, fish, float the river, sit around the fire, celebrate with us, and make their own memories there too. When we look back on our wedding, we won't just remember the ceremony or reception. We'll remember the entire weekend and how special it felt to have everyone we love together in one beautiful place. We will forever be grateful to Darren, his wife, Cassidy, and everyone at Riverbend for the role they played in giving us a wedding weekend we will never forget. It was beautiful, personal, peaceful, fun, and genuinely more than we could have hoped for. Riverbend will always hold such a special place in our hearts, and we truly couldn't imagine having gotten married anywhere else.

Seeing their strong support for Charlie Kirk and the Christian principles they present is both refreshing and inspiring. I look forward to continuing to do much more business with Riverbend Ranch moving forward.
