Their personalized caregiving and dementia day care program made a big difference during my father's struggles with Alzheimer's-dependent dementia. Alzheimer's disease has several stages and unfortunately, there aren't many effective treatments available for the symptoms at any stage. The best treatment programs for delaying the progression of Alzheimer's, backed by multiple clinical studies, cite the importance of staying active physically, mentally, and socially. During the initial stage of Alzheimer's seniors often recognize their declining lack of cognition. If you are a senior reading this review, this may be your reality too. If you find yourself in this position, AltaGolden's dementia day care center can be a great resource in your own personal efforts to remain mentally and socially active. Several of the seniors that I met at AltaGolden were in this position; namely, doing everything they could to stay active and stave off the progression of the disease. My father's interaction with AltaGolden began during the intermediate stage of the disease. It was an awkward time. My father had transitioned away from a state of independence but was not yet in need full-time memory care. Still highly functional in many regards, my father simply could not organize his activities of daily living, and as a result, he spent most of his time either sleeping or trying to figure out how to turn on the TV. In my opinion, it is during this awkward time of the disease where AltaGolden's caregivers, and their dementia day care program, really shine. Laura Barish and her team of caregivers created a personalized care program for my father. Caregivers became increasing involved in "queuing" (or prompting) my father's daily preparations (showering, dressing, grooming, etc.). They would then transport him to the AltaGolden memory care facility where my father would spend his day. The caregiving was spot-on due to their efforts to understand my father and to reach him on his level of reality. And it was competitively priced. But what truly makes the AltaGolden special is that they couple this excellent caregiving with their dementia day care center. The atmosphere at the day care center is fun. The staff get clients involved in exercises by presenting physical activities as "games" that are enjoyable and engaging. They also spend time with brain stimulation games which challenge cognition and memory while being genuinely enjoyable (I admit that participated too, from time to time). And finally, all of this takes place in context of peers; namely, other seniors with varying levels of dementia. Therefore, clients are more at ease and tend to interact with each other. The results for my father were impressive. I wish I could say that they reversed the course of the disease, but in his case, they gave him a sense of purpose. He could never remember the day care center with any specificity, but he talked about it incessantly. He would refer to it as "the place on the hill where I work." He would jokingly go on to say, "We never get anything done there, but we always have a good time!" It was a spirit that I had not seen in my father for some time. AltaGolden can also directly benefit the primary caregiver (you!). You also need a respite in order to manage your own affairs. You can hire personal caregivers to provide respite care in the home of your loved one, but for an 8-hour day I've found the cost from most agencies is around $200 or more. AltaGolden can certainly provide private (and excellent/less costly) caregiving services, but the day care center is a cost-effective option that can spell you in your ongoing role as the primary caregiver. One last word specifically about the staff; they are awesome. They will get to know your loved one and will be a resource for whatever is needed as the condition progresses. Laura Barish is somewhat of a savant when it comes to relating to individuals with dementia. I think she taught me more about how to deal with my father than I taught her. And the office managers, who have the massive task of coordinating schedules, are the most cordial and understanding in the business. All of them were instrumental in his care, and an invaluable resource when it finally came time to placing my father in a full-time memory care facility. So, if you are a senior looking to stay active in the context of your peers, or a primary caregiver looking to setup a network of support for you and your loved one, or if you just need a day of respite care as you support someone with dementia, I can't recommend AltaGolden enough. I would gladly give them 10 stars for their efforts. They were there for me and my father in a time of need and have made a lasting impact on both of our lives.

I decided that I needed some supplemental help once he returned home. I researched several agencies online checking Yelp/Google reviews, BBB information, licensing information and company websites. I developed a list of three agencies to contact based on my research. I contacted the first agency. It did not go well. I was shuffled around to different people; meetings were set up, then cancelled; calls/texts went unreturned; interviews were set up and candidates never showed/cancelled at the last minute; etc. After two weeks, I had had enough. Next up, Family Matters. I re-visited their website and downloaded the free In-Home Care Guide which required me to input my contact information. After fully reviewing the guide, I picked up my phone to call them and my phone rang before I could dial. The caller identified himself as Andrew from Family Matters. I laughed and told him that I was just about to call Family Matters. We spent the next 30-45 minutes discussing my father, his likes/dislikes, his personality, the qualifications that we were seeking in a caregiver, and the list of tasks/responsibilities the caregiver would perform for my father. Andrew indicated that he had a caregiver in mind and would call me back within the hour. I asked him to e-mail me a copy of their care agreement to review in the meantime. Within 5 minutes, I received the care agreement. Within an hour, he called to inform me that they had the perfect caregiver for my father and that she could start shortly. The caregiver, Marcia, that was placed with us was EXCEPTIONAL!!! She was a perfect fit for my father and was highly qualified. She was with him for about 15 months, and we cherished the time that she was in our home caring for my father. We would have loved to have had her with us until the end of time, but she retired. We were very happy for her, but sad to lose her as we had both grown very fond of her. Following her departure, Family Matters tried to find a replacement, but they were unable to find a good fit for my father in terms of availability to work the schedule that he needed, personality, skill set, and qualifications, so encouraged us to work with another agency. Although we were sad to no longer be working with Family Matters, we appreciated them being up front with us and putting our needs above their own. We engaged another agency who placed a caregiver with us for about 5 months. When she left, we contacted Family Matters to re-establish contact and query them about a replacement caregiver. We were told that Andrew had moved on and were introduced to Ashleigh, the new Account Manager. As before, we reviewed all of our requirements with her and within an hour, she had a great caregiver for him who started with my father the following week. That was a little over two months ago and his new caregiver, Elsie, is FANTASTIC!! Ashleigh maintains close contact with us to ensure my father's needs are being met, inquire about his health, and visit us in our home. There are a lot of independent caregivers & caregiving agencies out there. Some are not good, some are reasonably good, and others are exceptional. Family Matters and the caregivers that they employ, in our experience, are all exceptional. If I had to summarize the reasons I would recommend Family Matters to others in need of a caregiver, I would state the following: 1) The entire staff including, Account Managers, Staffing Managers, Receptionists, and Caregivers are extremely friendly, caring, polite, professional and responsive. If they say they are going to do something, they do it and do it within a reasonable amount of time. If a problem arises, they are on it quickly and it is resolved swiftly. 2) The staff does an exceptional job of listening to all requirements, qualifications and needs to best match a caregiver with the client 3) The caregivers have very good professional experience, qualifications, training, certifications, and licensing 4) The agency does all of the leg work, so you do not have to do so. As caregivers are employed by the agency, the agency conducts all recruiting, interviewing, background checks, references, licensing, training, benefits, liability insurance, time keeping, and manages the caregiver's payroll. They also handle billing, so you receive an invoice for each period which can be paid in several ways, including autopay. 5) They communicate in several ways and will accommodate their communications to the method which best suits the client 6) You can tell that the employees are treated well and that the management cares about their well-being. Everyone really enjoys working there and it shows. 7) Family Matters has many resources available on-line We highly recommend Family Matters to any person or family member looking for in home care for a loved one.

After a fair amount of research, I recommended we meet with Visiting Angels for an assessment. Best decision ever! At first, my folks had an Angel cook dinners twice a week, and that included grocery shopping. Then my dad became sick and had a special diet. We increased Angel hours to four days a week, for lunches and dinners, and general help between meals. The flexibility of this service is fantastic! Then, while my dad was still recuperating, my mom took a turn for the worse and ultimately needed 24-hour a day caregiving. We gave Visiting Angels very short notice, but we had help as soon as we needed it. Yay! As others have said, all the caregivers are competent and kind. Our special Angel is Antoinette. She's just a delight! Mom now lives in assisted living, and dad will soon, as well. We still use Angel help sometimes for transportation to appointments, as mom is wheelchair-bound and needs an attendant. I'll be forever grateful to Visiting Angels for providing exactly the help needed this past year. Don't hesitate to let them help you!

I'm so glad that she gave it a chance, and now she has chosen to start going three days per week! She comes home smiling every time she attends, excited to show her grandson and myself her art projects, tell us about the friends she made, how nice the staff were, etc. I have been so impressed with the care that she receives. From the front desk staff, to the Activities Department, and especially the social workers (special shoutout to Aliceson!), I can't think of anything but great things to say about this place. It takes a village to raise a child, but I believe it also takes a village to help our seniors age gracefully in their own homes and communities. My goal is to keep my mom home with me for as long as I can safely do so. Having a program like AmeriCare as part of my village makes that goal actually feel possible!

The 2 stars are because of absolutely terrible management, organization, empathy, and care for patients. If I was rating just the people that were assigned to my house I would give a 3-4 but management made it impossible to meet half of those people so I regret that my rating remains at 2 stars. The supervisor Diane is TERRIBLE..the largest reason my rating is so low. Multiple times I attempted to reach out to make this work but her communication was so poor it only got worse. When I finally called to terminate care because I had had enough, not only did she not even return my call but she failed to inform the specialists whos' schedule I was on. I had to inform FOUR people that I terminated care because she failed to do so. The RN Dennise (?) was awful. (older woman, short, with longer grey hair). This woman sat at my house for over an hour and all she did was take my blood pressure (incorrectly i might add), measured the length of my steri-strips (and then said that was the length of my incisions which was false), and talked about her personal life. After seeing photos of my husband around the house, she tried convincing me to have him hook her daughter up on a date with his friends, said that "there are not enough home health aides so you can just hire me out of pocket and I can help you out", and then when I stopped laughing at her "jokes" because it had been over an hour and she had not done anything she was supposed to, I got scolded saying, "I am just trying to make you laugh, okay! Loosen up!". Then she wouldn't leave! Completely unprofessional. When I called to request a different nurse because I felt uncomfortable with the one assigned, I was told that that was out of character for her (by the supervisor Diane), and that she would see what she could do about a different nurse. Diane seemed genuine about the situation until I yet again did not receive a phone call back as requested. Being that I never received a follow up call from this situation, I only knew that I was able to get a new nurse because a week later a new one called me saying I was on her schedule. This lack of communication was a really terrible and confusing trend. Every single person assigned to my care, I only got wind of by getting a morning phone call saying they would be at my house soon. There is zero organization which is wholeheartedly because of management. If the managers assigned someone to call say, the day before and inquired if the assigned time was still okay, then the next day maybe people like me wouldn't have specialists show up at my door 2 hours early with no notification because some other patients bailed on care for the day. Going into that as well, it is extremely unnerving getting a phone call from a number you do not know, saying they are a specialist assigned to come to your house that day, when you had zero idea a specialist had even been approved. A phone call from management saying hey, so you know this specialist was approved, they name is _____ and you should expect to receive a call from them shortly, would have made me more comfortable with the situation... Especially when I as a patient have REQUESTED a follow up phone call. Instead, every time I got one of these calls I had to call in to the office myself to verify that yes this specialist was assigned to me. I tried very hard to work with this company to make it work and my requests for communication are not something that is even remotely unreasonable, but I eventually had to terminate care, and I will never use them again. I will never recommend this company to anyone, and I will be calling the skilled nursing facility I came from to suggest they use a different company. These are the people that were decent: Physical Therapist: Mark, was pretty good. You could tell that he cared, though I think my actual situation was a little foreign to him. Understandable because my case was 100% abnormal for the usual patient requiring home health. Occupational Therapist: Eric. Same comments as to Mark. He also helped me order some inexpensive equipment that proved to be extremely beneficial. These to women were AMAZING and need to be noted as such. Home Health Aide Beatriz, and LPN Lisa. I never actually had the courtesy of meeting either of these women because of error on managements end. They were both assigned to give me care that I did NOT need, and NOT assigned to give me care I DID need. These women both tried relating my situation to management, gave me multiple follow up calls to see if the situation had been resolved, and expressed great regret when I told her that I terminated care. These two women showed the most amount of empathy out of everyone. I wish I was able to post a better review, hopefully you guys are able to clean up your care a bit. Your patients deserve that much.
