Finding a local restaurant (Raleigh, NC) that serves steamed blue crabs has proven to be a bit of a challenge. So excited to find Riggins on my most recent travel expedition. The area is separated by a fresh seafood market and by the restaurant itself. We particularly came here for the blue crabs. However, we found the cornmeal dredge fish to be fried well (salt & pepper seasoning) & portion size generous. I especially enjoyed that you can purchase a unit of blue crab (1-5 pieces) and not necessarily a dozen or 1/2 dozen. You have the option of jumbo, large, and regular sizes. I found the traditional seasoning preferable to the garlic option. Service attentive but not overbearing (depending on your seasoning preference you may request additional seasoning). Our biggest gripe was that the shop closed for vacation but wasn't listed on Yelp, website, or on voicemail. Overall a good to great seafood restaurant. Prices can be pricey (portion size makeup for the price point) Thus far, our favorite Floridian meal. read more

This is our 4th time dining here as a group. The food is always delicious, but the service depends on the day. They are really fast at taking your initial order but it may take a while to get your server's attention for additional requests once the food arrives. Two times out of the four we had to wait 10+ minutes to get our check. Overall their menu is huge, there is something for everyone for sure. Great experience As a Maryland transplant I miss the blue crabs , went there today and it was wonderful. Great service and the blue crabs were like home. If you've ever eaten blue crabs, you know every once in a while you get one that's just not right, I had placed it in the shell tray and the server noticed it and without saying a word he came by and dropped off two crabs fresh out of the steamer. That is great service. They care about the experience. I will definitely go back. read more

Every single time we visit the area this is a must do stop. We came in for Sunday lunch and was seated immediately. The staff is always super friendly and was happy to have us there. The ambiance was nice and inviting. Restaurant was clean and the music was enjoyable. For food: we started with 3 appetizers. Crab cake, lobster bits, and spinach and artichoke dip. Everything was fresh and a great portions. Their strawberry lemonade is delicious for entrees we got the snow crabs, blue crabs, burger, surf and turf burger and fries. All delicious! Paul and I went back to Riggins crab house on Wednesday because my goal was to have their sushi and crabcake for dinner. We shared both dishes and it was up to our expectations. It was a wonderful meal and the service was great. The crabcake came with coleslaw and one side and we added another side so we would both have a corn on the cob. There was an up charge for the linguine with the crab sauce. We did not have room for dessert, but Paul did have a nice couple of beers. This is not a fancy place but it's a lot of fun and casual. It's a great place to come with friends to enjoy an easy night out. The sushi is only served on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The place is closed on Monday and Tuesday. read more

This was my first time going to this restaurant. The food was great and very plentiful. The service was very fast, considering that we had a lot of people who came to my sister's birthday celebration. The ambiance was very nice. I had the Riggins Sea Raft $28.95, which was 3 1/2 sides of fried catfish, shrimp, clams, oysters, 2 pieces of cod and a blue crab. It was enough for 2 people! It was a lot of food for the price. I also had a Caesar salad and a loaded baked potato. The platter had so much food on it, I bought some home for another meal! To drink I had me a Mountain Dew, with free refills. Local staple to the seafood delicacy of the town! For years my colleagues have spoken wonders about this location saying their crab is heavenly , tastes fabulous and good for family gatherings. Today at the table I choose the mushroom crab and soup- I would not recommend the conch as I have had authentic Bahamian and this was more minestrone when I requested to change to chowder it was fantastic! My friends taught me the skill of breaking the crab and how to have the variety of flavors all in the bucket. Essential for large family gatherings and the house was full of groups. It gets very busy out the door on major holidays but the service was quick, food and as delicious and parking in the future will fill up. read more

I went here long time ago when I was younger, the place has a lot of nostalgia. I was in the neighborhood, and I said why not. Went in, and I was seated quickly, was greeted by three nice looking young g men. This was great, brought me water with a lime, great. I ordered king crab legs and clam chowder. The clam chowder was delicious, creamy. I ordered a Dr. Pepper, from one of the guys, never saw that guy or the Dr.Pepper again. Then came the king crab legs. I got the cracker, fork and knife. They didn't have that widdle to cut along the crab, used a fork instead. The crab was overdone. It had a weird tough skin around the meat, I had to peel it off, like a tough membrane. After I was finished, I realized, there was no towelette. So my hands were icky. I wet the paper towel in my water glass to get the crab juice off. For the money, knowing coming in that this would not be a cheap meal, considering I was treating my self, I wish I would have went somewhere else. I didn't even bother asking for dessert. read more

Rigging Crabhouse turned out to be a really pleasant spot for a relaxed seafood meal. I started with the fried soft-shell crab appetizer, which was a standout right away; crispy on the outside, tender inside, and a great way to ease into the meal. The Caesar salad that followed was cold, crisp, and nicely dressed, with that classic, familiar flavor that just feels right with seafood. For my main, I had the blackened mahi-mahi sandwich with a side of rice pilaf and linguine in a light butter-and-oil sauce. The mahi was fresh, nicely seasoned, and cooked just right. The rice pilaf was fluffy and well seasoned without being salty, a simple but solid side that soaked up the flavors from the fish. The linguine was a nice change of pace. It was light, not weighed down with a heavy sauce, with just enough butter and oil to coat the pasta and make it feel comforting without being too rich. I finished with a flaming crème brûlée, which was a fun touch and a nice way to end the meal. The caramelized top had a good crack to it, and the custard underneath was smooth and enjoyable. Overall, it was a comfortable, low-key experience with good food, thoughtful sides, and a dessert that rounded out the whole visit. read more

Our group had such an awesome time last Saturday night for dinner... There were five of us -we requested a hightop table in the bar area, and between the great service, the great food and the dive bar/crab house vibe, it was an experience to remember! Dave was our waiter (maybe even overheard he was one of the owners?) And he was super informative and helpful in terms of what to order. Hot tip - he asked us if we had reserved any crabs for our Maryland crab order and we hadn't so keep that in mind... They will accept holding crab for your party. We opted to go with a dozen of the large Maryland blue crabs. They are steamed in beer and vinegar and topped with an old bay type seasoning that was not overpowering... You can get butter, garlic, butter vinegar whatever you want on the side, the butter was really a nice touch. They had other sized crabs, including small/medium, jumbo and colossal, but from experience, we know that the smaller the crab, the sweeter the meat, but we didn't want to be picking for hours so we went with the large and we were totally pleased! I would go with the large again! We were with an experienced crab eater, but if we were not, Dave would've given us a demonstration on how to eat it properly and get as much meat out as you can. Four of us shared a dozen crab and a rack of ribs. It was actually the perfect amount of food. Though I could've eaten more crab lol We were there for 2 1/2 hours- I always love a dinner that is the main event! To finish up, we all shared a piece of the Keylime pie and it was very very good. This review is 3.5 stars...wish Yelp allowed 1/2 stars. Their seafood is really good! I had a crabcake sandwich that was delicious, all crab, no filler. It came with one side, I chose asparagus, it was a large portion. One of my friends had the double lobster tails and really enjoyed them. Another had 1/2 dozen Maryland crabs. When we arrived the staff at the front desk mentioned the berry cobbler, which needed to be ordered 20 minutes in advance and was enough for 2 people. I ordered it and was disappointed. It is enough for 2 people, however it's not a cobbler, it has pie crust on top, which is heavy. Cobbler should have a light, crumbly topping. For $15, they could have given you 2 scoops of ice cream, instead of 1 since 2 people are eating it. read more

We having been going here from time to time over the years. Recently I won a stone crab dinner for two from an Instagram giveaway. I made a 6:30 reservation for a very busy Friday night. The stone crabs were amazing. I also ordered the French onion soup, Holy Moly delicious. We had two cocktails, which were very good also. If you do not arrive at a early time, their parking lot will probably be full, and you have to park in the supermarket parking lot. They have a separate bar, which is usually packed. For a seafood place , the prices are pretty reasonable. Plenty of items on the menu to choose from. All the appetizers that were coming out all looked very good. Found this restaurant accidentally (just got off the freeway to get gas) and so glad we did! Haven't had Maryland-style crabs since I was up there about twenty years ago. So good and so worth the effort to crack the crabs open. Glad I got the medium size instead of the half-dozen of small crabs, that would have been a lot of work! Unfortunately my fiancée didn't like his order. He really wanted the Admiral Platter but they ran out of king crabs. Came here with some friends for a late lunch after church. The atmosphere was relaxed, but the service was noticeably slow but we packed our patience. That said, our waitress was very kind and did her best, even though she was clearly overwhelmed by the busy Sunday crowd. I kicked things off with a strawberry margarita with a sugar rim. Sweet, smooth, and surprisingly strong. One was all I needed to start the afternoon off right! For my entrée, I went with the grilled salmon and a loaded baked potato, with scampi butter on the side. It took about an hour for our meals to arrive, which was frustrating, but we made the best of it. The salmon itself was just okay. Cooked well but lacking in flavor. Thankfully, the scampi butter added a nice boost. The real standout of the meal, though, was the loaded baked potato. Hot, hearty, and loaded with toppings. I was satisfied. Overall, the experience was a mixed bag: good company, a tasty drink, and a delicious side, but weighed down by the long wait and underwhelming entrée. Kinda old Florida place or felt like it. Everyone as we came in all very welcoming, pretty awesome! It's a casual place, not loud or crazy. We started with an app of clam strips which we really liked, yummm!! I had the shrimp trio with baked potato and coleslaw.it was okay, the shrimp were butterflied into round which made the fried ones and coconut ones so thin. It was like having just breading, the garlic ones were grilled on a stick tasted not right. Husb had the shrimp and crab pasta, which came with a huge portion of pasta, the seafood was like a cream glob on top. Service was friendly and efficient well above the norm. COLD CRABS with barnacles at a Crabhouse?! We recently picked up 1 dozen blue crabs from Riggins Crab House ($68 w tax), expecting Maryland-style crabs with old bay seasoning and corn, served hot & fresh. What we got was just old crabs--no seasoning, no butter, and lukewarm corn (1 ear). The crabs looked like the bottom of the barrel, dark inside and out, barnacles on claws, and they were stone cold! Multiple claws were cold to the touch. Take a look at disgusting pics. I really dislike spending good money ($68) for what is arguably the "best tasting crab" in the world --blue crabs! And getting shitty crabs - it's disrespectful to Maryland's blue crabs. *I called the restaurant. The woman on the phone wanted to pass me off to someone else. *Their phone etiquette and customer service could use some tweaking as well. read more

If I could: 4.5 stars for the food; 3 stars for atmosphere; 2 to 2.5 for service. They stock multiple types of crab legs. Most originate in the Pacific Northwest. They looked great, and I'm sure the reason most people come here. Many items list the price as MP. Other servers described the options and the prices, not our waiter. We considered a complete New England style clambake, but the only option on our visit cost $200 because they only had 2.5 pound lobsters. We decided to add the clambake (clams, mussels, shrimp, corn, and potatoes) to a meal -just $15! The crab cakes were wonderful. The large Stone crabs were great too. The burger (not everyone likes seafood) was okay; although it had to be exchanged because it was ordered medium and came out well done the first time. The escargot was strange as it came with mushrooms. There was no bread and crackers were served upon request. We had to request drink refills. The space is large and chopped up into smaller rooms and a bar. The tables are covered with paper that's discarded after each customer. Rather than extra napkins, there are paper towels rolls on each table. The bill came with a 3% operation fee?! Note: the place was very busy, but not too loud. My broiled lobster tails were huge and also piled high with crab meat. The mixed berry cobbler was a diabetic nightmare. A football sized portion of pastry covered in powdered sugar and ice cream. Riggins Crabhouse is the real deal. They know their crabs and do a great job sharing their knowledge. It is an informal and lively atmosphere. Eating crabs is messy business, and oh so delicious. The atmosphere here is fun and vibrant, which is why we chose it for a dinner with a party of 13 and had high expectations for the evening. When we first sat down, our waiter was friendly and took our drink order. Unfortunately, when he returned, an entire tray of drinks spilled all over my head and down my shirt. I tried to handle it gracefully, didn't get upset, dried off, and continued with the night. The apology felt rushed and half-hearted, and no manager ever came over to acknowledge what happened or check in, which was disappointing. I was told my meal would be covered, but that was the extent of the response. The food service was also very delayed. Half of our party received their meals, while the other half waited an additional 20 minutes. There was no apology for the uneven timing, only excuses that the chef "only takes five orders at a time." Overall, while the space and energy of the restaurant are great, the service and lack of accountability--especially given the drink spill--really took away from what should have been a special group dinner. read more

Food was good, LOVED the coleslaw!!! When they say garlic on the crab, they are not kudding! If you aren't a big garlic lady ver you may want to afk them to go easy, for me there's never enough so nobissue. Our server was pleasant and we definitely did not feel rushed. The crabs were well seadoned and the crabcake contained a lot if crab. The oeice is a little steep but honestly didn't mind paying since it was tasty. We went when it opened so it wasn't too noisy.
