I didn't try their food but I'm guessing this is a view that you are not going to come across every day. It was worth the effort of hiking 8 miles uphill. (You might be able to drive there, too?) This rifugio started off as a church built in 1484, the detached house built in 1718. They have food... I hear the Kaiserschmarren is a classic and they have things like eggs with speck and polenta with cheese and mushrooms. I have no doubt that the views here are fantastic...unfortunately, the day we decided to get in a…read more'quick' (8.4 miles round-trip, in this case) hike from San Cassiano, it was quite cloudy, with the opportunity for rain virtually the entire time. We made it to the rifugio at Santa Croce just as the rain began to let loose, so we took the opportunity to wait out the low-hanging thunderstorm in the rifugio and grab a quick snack while we were at it. It was quite thinly-staffed while we were there (and there were few tourists there as well - just a couple other parties that got stranded by the weather), so it took a bit of time to get our check at the end, which was important given that we got a let-up in the rain long enough to book it back to town. The entrance has sliding doors - a modernity that wasn't at any other rifugio - and that leads you to a dining room on the right. We got a speck and cheese sandwich to share, along with a bowl of tagliatelle with a porcini mushroom cream sauce. The sandwich was alright - the speck was great, and the cheese reminded me of a muted Swiss cheese (a plus in my book, as I don't like Swiss usually), but utilizing the Tuscany-style bread that lacked salt made the sandwich a bit on the plain side. The tagliatelle, on the other hand, was very good, and with tagliatelle that was a bit different from the rest of the trip - the edges were serrated, giving it a bit more texture with each bite. The mushroom-infused sauce wasn't the best we had on the trip, but it was still very enjoyable (and quite affordable to boot). While we did not stay here for very long, we enjoyed the coziness of the rifugio while we waited out the rain. It's not the best rifugio we visited, and there's no doubt that the view would be more enjoyable with a clearer sky, but it was a sight to behold when we stepped out after the rain had passed and we saw the limestone mountains washed in rain and seeing endless waterfalls running down every nook and crevice. The trail is worth a hike for the views, but the food is pretty good as well!

The atmosphere is very picturesque: there are just a few tables and upon arrival you are prompt greated by the personnel wearing the local costume. The menu changes on a daily basis but everything is fresh made from scratch in respect of the local culinary tradition. I had an awesome pasta but what really impressed me was their dessert.

This great place is a registered Austrian mountain cabin with a marvelous panoramic view onto the region as well as onto bordering Austrian states such as Carinthia. The cabin also provides a glass roofed sun terrace giving shelter. This lodge is easy to reach as it is located at the end of a paved mountain road at a wind farm with its 12 wind turbines and rotors so far (60 - 120 meters tall), as private wind farm producing energy for the public power grid of the region. Half the way up to the Klosterneuburgerhütte there is a toll station on the road which demands 5 Euros for the maintenance of the road. But as soon as you reached the Alm (the term for the Austrian top of the mountains) you can get into the Klosterneuburgerhütte and have lovely local Austrian food and drinks in a traditional county-style atmosphere with a friendly couple from South-Western Styria who are running this place. By the way it's 38 Euros per night (fully equipped bed with sheet, breakfast and supper included) if you decide to stay over night at the Klosterneuburgerhütte in order to explore the scenic area from here by hiking for instance. From here you can have extended hiking tours to other mountain peaks of the Austrian Alps in the region as well as to the mountain tops of the surrounding Kleiner Zinken and the Hoher Zinken peak which both are within close reach and only 2 hours away or a little more depending on your hiking speed. But here at the Klosterneuburgerhütte it's the closest you will get to a mountain peak, as you can drive all the way up to the Klosterneuburgerhütte cabin (at 1902 meters) and then you will hike some 300 meters elevation gain all the way up to the Hoher Zinken. This hiking tour of about 2 hours let you beat retreat anytime if the weather changes. But there is a small wooden Anna-Kapelle one the way providing shelter. Anyway at the Klosterneuburgerhütte we had a lovely Steirerkäsebrot (a delicious cheese bread with traditional tasty cheese, called Steirerkäse or Styrian Cheese) together with a Gösser Kracherl, a non-alcoholic new alternative by the Gösser beer brewery for hikers like us. Some doubles etc. We had a double with our own toilet, shower & balcony. It was picturesque. Red gingham curtains, cow paintings etc. You have to take a snow machine to get up to this place & if you miss the occasional times that it goes back down to the town you have to toboggan - awesome! The breakfast & evening meal were included in our nightly rate & the price was ridiculously good! The ribs were outstanding. There's an outdoor hot tub which thr owners will gladly fire up for you in the snow. Staying here felt like a fairy tale. I can't wait to go back!

They were so excited to take me to Spielberghaus because the journey to and from the restaurant is so much a part of their favorite family traditions. First of all, no cars are allowed to drive up the snowy path that leads to the cabin. You have the option of taking a large snowmobile or a "pistenraupe" all the way to the cabin for a few euro. We decided to walk up the path because it was such a beautiful night. The 45 minute walk was definitely a challenge as it is all uphill, but you cannot beat the views and scenery of this special place, it's truly magical. At the top of the hill, you feel like you're discovering a special hideaway with the warm lights glowing onto the white snowy banks outside. Indoors is perfectly decorated as you would imagine an Austrian hut in the Alps to be, complete with floor to ceiling wood beams, and local music playing in the background. Our meal of goulash, schnitzel, apfenstrudel, and beers was definitely well deserved after our walk. Service was top notch and so hospitible, it felt like we were in someone's home. My favorite part of the experience was the way home. Sleds are available to rent for you to take down the path you just climbed up! Believe me, there is nothing like a sled ride that lasts 15 minutes down the most picturesque snowy setting you can imagine. Truly a memory that I will not forget that I cannot wait to repeat already. Go and enjoy yourself!

I recently stayed in this mountain hut on a 6 day Alpine Crossing. I would definitely rate this as…read moreone of the better mountain huts I have stayed in. The sleeping accommodation was comfortable, the washroom facilities adequate and spotlessly clean, the food and service good and friendly in spite of the fact that the hut was hopelessly overful. The hut is designed for max 250 guests and had to accommodate 390 on the night. Under mountain rules no hiker can be turned away. Under the circumstances the staff did a great job. Needless to say the scenery is breathtaking and well worth the climb from Oberstdorf which took us about 4 hours.

If you are staying in Corvara you can ski down without any lifts. And you can ask Petra to organize a Fiacollata for you. They provide the torches so you can ski down at night. The whole building is made from wood, both inside and out and it has real character. The don't have menus and don't serve a huge selection of food but everything that they do serve is amazing. Particularly worth mentioning are the Ribs and fries (which must have MSG on them as they are amazing) and the cracking range of pastas they do, most notably the Putanesca with olives, garlic and anchovies. The service is good if a little slow when ordering and paying but it is worth waiting for for what is on offer. For the wine snobs there is even a little wine tasting hut outside which has a good selection of drinks. Try the Prosecco here as it's really good. Oh yeah and the terrace outside is amazing on a sunny day as they tend to play chilled out café music and you can just loose yourself in a drink and the view.

Alta Badia is considered as the top ski resort for beginners/ intermediate because more than 50% of the pistes are piste azzurre (blue =beginner runs. Equivalent to green slopes in America) and 40 % of the pistes are red/medium-difficulty. It would be an understatement to say Alta Badia has plenty of lifts.... there are more than 50 lifts! The reason why it has so many lifts is because Alta Badia is made of 6 villages - Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano, Padraces, & Sella Ronda. These villages are all linked together so you can ski at any of them except Sella Ronda. Padraces is considered the easiest pistes and Sella Ronda is known for more challenging runs but you need the Superski pass to get a direct access. There are nearly 100 slopes and the snow condition is fantastic!! I personally prefer Obereggen more but Alta Badia is just as fun and beautiful, and perhaps has better apre-ski scene. P.S.- At the mountain huts, try the delicious goulash!!!

Mountain…read moreHuts are by definition basic, intended as overnight shelter, but this particular hut is badly managed. We were unable to have showers after a 9 hour hike in plus 30 degree temperatures, you had to queue for upto 30 mins to get a drink, we had dinner in a tent with a metal frame at altitude during a thunderstorm because the hut could not cope, etc. This was not even safe, let alone comfortable. Unfortunately it is difficult to avoid this hut if one wants to hike the E5 route from Oberstdorf to Meran, but I would not stay in this mountain hut again.
