On our 'off day' from hiking, we decided to take a quick trot up the hill south of San Cassiano…read more Once on top, we stopped at Rifugio Las Vegas, largely because I found it quite amusing that one of these Rifugios was named after Sin City in the U.S. - and there really is no relation between the two beyond the rustic, 'ole-Western style that the outside of the rifugio appears to have. I can't speak to the indoor ambiance, as we stayed outside the whole time to enjoy our quick bite, but it does a semi-okay impression of imagining what the Wild West might have looked like, save for the club music and the foosball table that got most of the attention. Our waitresses got us menus quickly and delivered our food faster, given we came at an odd time (mid-afternoon, and just before a light rain set in), so the service was pretty decent. One of the daily specials was lasagna, so we had to try that, and it did not fail to please...incredibly tasty, with each layer of pasta cooked to perfection. It wasn't overly cheesy (like some American imitations can be), and there was plenty of ragu in between the folds to be had. For about 10 euros, this was a generous - and delicious - serving to have. We also shared a caprese sandwich amongst ourselves, which was very good as well. The bread was a larger ciabatta roll, sliced in half and served with basil, tomatoes, and a couple generous slices of mozzarella, drizzled in a little olive oil. Simple, tasty, and a great filler-up to keep you going on your hikes. Although the rifugio is a little more kitschy than other spots we visited, Las Vegas turned out to have an extensive menu, and all of the food we had was quite good. I would definitely come back to see how other menu items are as well.
