So anyway, after this first check up I went into my car and cried (couldn't believe that I had 8 cavities). My gut told me something wasn't right, so I asked friends for referrals and got a second opinion at another dentist, and guess what, second opinion found NO CAVITIES. I've been going to the second opinion dentist ever since. No wonder there's a big picture of a diamond in the "Centre for Exceptional Dentistry's" window. When you open your mouth, they see dollar signs. BEWARE.

After a very bad experience at a different office, we found Dr. Shinners. I explained to him that my young daughter was very scared to have her check-up. He and his staff where very helpful and very gentle. Because they were so nice and accommodating we've stuck with them for years. My daughter is now 15 years-old and has no issues going to her dentist appointments. She also has very nice teeth! There's only one reason I don't give Dr. Shinners a full five stars. And really...he can't help it. But the man has BIG hands. :)

These guys weren't even willing to call my insurance company to tell me if a new one would be covered or not. Seriously think about that - they wouldn't even call my insurance so I could get them paid. I had to call them. They also didn't tell me the dentist that referred me to them didn't send over the referral and panoramic information they requested until the very last minute the day before my appointment, then waited until I showed up in person to tell me that I need a new panoramic. Every last sentence I had with the staff there was greeted with hostility. Seriously I was treated so bad I wouldn't come back in if they gave me the extraction for free.

Cheryl, my hygienist, and Dr. McDonald and Ashley have been the most amazing team over the last year, in particular as I cracked two teeth as a result of extreme stress. They guided me through a very painful process and made sure my mouth feels and looks perfect at the conclusion of the work. The work performed is of high quality (as are the labs that they use - for crowns, implants, mouth guards). They have stayed on top of technology so imaging is easy, painless and comprehensive, including 3D digital models. They show the utmost care to their patients before, during and after procedures. The staff is friendly but still professional. The work above all else is thorough and exceedingly well executed. My husband has also had good experiences over the years (although he has needed less dental work, thankfully!) but as a family, we are beyond pleased. I couldn't recommend this dentist more highly. There are some cases when work is authorized by insurance at a certain expected amount, but the actual charges are different. I have never had an issue with this, as it's clearly explainable (the procedure had to go a different way, or the insurance covered something at a higher percent). The clinic "banks" any overpayment for us, and we use it for any charges we might accrue going forward. They have offered to reimburse us as well, but with a family that goes to the same dental clinic, keeping the overpayment there simplifies things for my purposes and I appreciate that they are willing to do that. When I asked will I be billed. One receptionist spoke to me for two seconds with her purse and bag on her and said no bill but was halfway leaving I said appears you want to start your weekend rather than handle my issue as a customer or patient. I was referred to this office and made my situation abundantly clear from the start: I am traveling…read morefrom Chicago, paying entirely out of pocket, and have an extremely limited and hectic work schedule. I called three months in advance specifically to secure surgery during a pre-approved week off in January. I was explicitly told there was availability, with the only requirement being a pre-op appointment. I completely understand this needed pre- appt. I drove in from Chicago at 5AM for that appointment, and was told my X-rays from 12 months prior were "too old." While frustrating, I understood and agreed to repeat imaging, paying $450 that day. After the exam, I was sent to reception to pay and "schedule surgery," only to then be told I would need yet another appointment before surgery could even be scheduled -- something that was never disclosed minutes earlier in the room. After explaining that I had already made a lengthy trip and that this was not what had been communicated to me, the staff briefly conferred and suddenly said they could perform the cone beam scan that same day for an additional $350. Wanting to avoid yet another trip and finally move forward, I agreed and paid on the spot. After completing the scan, I was once again sent to reception, where I was then told they actually could not accommodate surgery during the very week they had originally promised. At that point, I had paid roughly $800 for appointments day of and scans based entirely on their assurances, only to be told they could not deliver what had been guaranteed. I remained polite, rescheduled for my next available time off (cancelling my personal VACATION) in March, and clearly explained that this would be my only window until June. I also emphasized that I am in significant pain and that the delay was severely impacting my quality of life. The response was largely dismissive. I left defeated and disappointed, but understood that things happen. I received a call last week (Feb.9th from Allie) informing me that they could not perform my surgery at all because Dr. Kimmel would be "busy." It is baffling that I was scheduled in the first place if this was the case. At this point, I politely requested copies of my receipts, X-rays, and cone beam scan so I could seek care elsewhere. The tone immediately shifted, and I was met with impatience, dismissiveness, and clear irritation simply for asking for records I had paid for. When the emailed records did not include the $350 cone beam scan, I followed up and again encountered attitude questioning why I would need it despite the fact that I personally funded it. It was eventually mailed to me on a CD. This entire experience felt disorganized, misleading, and profoundly unprofessional. My family has spent tens of thousands of dollars here over the years as uninsured, cash-paying patients, which makes this level of disregard even more disappointing. It is clear to me the dismissive communication here demonstrates a serious lack of respect for patients' time, finances, and well-being. To say I am disappointed in the level of care and professionalism would be an understatement. This is not how you treat loyal, paying patients. I hope this is a "one-off" situation for this office because Dr. Kimmel himself was incredibly kind and thorough with explaining my surgery that I unfortunately, will not be having here.

The building is relatively small (but not cramped) and completely updated to look like a modern, inviting home. The feeling of home is echoed in the friendliness of each and every staff member. All of them are polite, professional, and friendly. Considering a dentist's office is the LAST place you want to be they definitely go the extra mile to make you feel comfortable. Both doctor and tech were open about each step without being intimidating. They are genuinely concerned for your comfort and conduct themselves effectively without being heavy handed. Booking an appointment is great. They send email confirmations with calendar entries for convenience. Rescheduling is a breeze. After leaving from a tooth extraction I was unexpectedly given a "gift from the tooth fairy" which included a custom thank you card and a gift certificate for a treat. The finishing touches were amazing on what was already a pleasant visit. Could not recommend them enough.
