So over this place. I give up trying to join or do a class. The b---- at the front desk waved me away like I was a criminal today. Sick of it being locked/closed/so exclusive. It's a freaking YMCA. I live right there. I don't get how people get in. If it's not an exclusive club, how can you get people to sign up if there is no one there to take your money or there are sour pusses at the desk who don't like people. Maybe I'm the crazy one but I'd had zero problems at any other sort of establishment. The poor wouldn't like using this facility, but the Ridgewood. This is a pretty cool YMCA, and the main problem here is parking. Also it's a little bit cramped and gets a little bit busy in some regards but overall I like the place and they think it's a good gym - better than a lot of the ones in Queens and Brooklyn as well. Not as lavish and fancy as Manhattan but then you wouldn't expect to be. They've done a good job for Ridgewood and if they just had some great parking then I would probably give them five stars. Fairly new equipment across the board kind of like mine. I parked illegally for 3 hours and nothing happened to my car, but the fact that there was no legal parking (and I looked for a long time) is the only reason I can't give 5. One of the employees had a crush on me, and it was mutual. She gets 5, easy. I guess I'm easy, too. read more

SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's a new gym in the Glendale/Ridgewood area, with beautiful new machines, a gorgeously restored building to keep them in, a super-friendly staff that's awfully generous with their time, and a nice, quiet, un-musclehead, un-trendy-gym, kinda clientele. You go there and it's just the ideal workout environment. Kid-friendly, senior-friendly, regular-guy-friendly. I LOVE coming here. I'm gonna love coming here for a long time, I hope. But secretly, a part of me hopes it stays busy, like it is now, but not TOO busy. All things considered, this is a relatively small space, and you don't have to stand around and wait for the one leg press now, or the one crunch machine now....but if it draws a significantly larger crowd, this could all be blown. That said, this is a review for the here and now. And right here, right now, this gym ROCKS, and is a ridiculous bargain considering all the facilities, the full class schedule, and so much else. read more

The times that I go, it's never crowded. Love their equipments here. They even offer wipes after you use the eqipments near each corner or so. Too bad they aren't open 24 hours though. read more

I was out of town in NY for the weekend, but still wanted to get a quick sweat sesh in so I wouldn't be behind in my workouts. While this is admittedly one of the smaller YMCA's I've been to, they make it up with good equipment, but most importantly- incredibly friendly and welcoming staff. Seriously, I felt more welcome here by Andrea than the folks at my local gym. She took the time to show me where everything was, even though she knew I was only there for a few days. There were more than enough cardio machines for me to be able to get my run in, plus I was pleasantly surprised that they had weights like 32.5! There's always those times when you can lift a 30, but not quite feelin' 35, but I've never seen those in-between weights before. I would easily come back when in the area. read more

Did not have a good experience with the gym. Won't be returning back there again. Particularly some of the managers there were rude, impolite and very lazy. Asked for forms for gym reimbursement and was given the cold shoulder when being asked for it. The employees were more than willing to help, but the manager at the time I was there was very rude. They could have just asked to come in another day if anything. Gym does not provide towel service unlike the Manhattan YMCAs as well. Some of the weight machines are ok, but some of them had issues with the handles and could have been fixed. Some of the benches had torn fabric, needs to be replaced/repaired. read more

I joined this Y a few days after their reopening, and so far, I'm happy with it. The staff is excellent... always friendly, helpful and patient. The interior is beautiful- besides everything being brand-spanking-new, they did a nice job and it all looks clean and modern. The locker rooms are clean and there are plenty of lockers available. I look forward to trying the classes-but I'll probably wait until after the first of the year when they add more yoga during the week. Also, I love that it's only a two train stops from my place in Bushwick, which is a major plus to the otherwise lacking neighborhood! read more

I am a Queens-wide member of the YMCA and, as such, like to take advantage of this privilege. This gym is really nice looking, with new equipment, friendly staff and a 'fancy' locker room. I use that word, because it has a two sided vanity mirror that I really liked and made me forget I was in a gym locker room. I was intrigued by the Chakra Yoga class, instructed by Barbara. It is the exact type of yoga class that I have been looking for. I'm all for the more athletic based yoga classes. But I need a more relaxing experience, and I found it. She was wonderful and offered modifications for several poses, without judgment. It was an absolute pleasure meeting her and I cannot wait to take her yoga class again! I also cannot wait to try other classes as I try to figure out a weekly 'routine' that I enjoy at the gym. The only con I would say is the parking, or lack thereof. The other YMCA's I go to are in areas that have easy street parking and/or their own parking lots. I'll just add that to my travel time on the days I go. It's worth it. :) read more

Everything is always clean here and never overly crowded. I really enjoy all the classes, and the instructors are friendly. My favorite is Zumba with Latifa on Saturday mornings! Such a sexy fun workout! Devon is also super motivational and friendly. The only down side to this Y, is that there is no pool. read more

I've been a member of the Ridgewood YMCA location for almost a year now and I like this smaller YMCA location for many reasons, but there is also room for improvement. First of all the staff is so friendly and welcoming. I like the variety of classes they offer, which is primarily what I come to the gym for, but there aren't classes offered mid day and very few in the morning during the week and weekends. For instance on Saturday mornings there is only one yoga class offered at 9am and that's it for the whole day. During weekdays they offer classes starting at 6pm. I love the PIYO class the best but this class is only offered once a week. I'm like- why only once? I'd love more opportunities and time availability to fit these types of classes into my schedule. I often miss them because the times don't work for me. Also some classes take place in one of the preschool classrooms downstairs which really feels strange and can get hot. It's definitely not a space designed to work out, but I understand it's due to the size of the building which is super small. I'm usually one of the youngest people who attend classes (under 30 years old) but I never feel uncomfortable and everyone is super friendly. I think for the price I'm paying I get a good bang for my buck and the gym equipment is great. If I could change one thing it would be to offer more times for yoga classes during the weekends (not just in the morning) and weekdays. read more

I have been attending various gyms ever since I remember, and have plenty of horror stories to share, but this place so far has been the best experience in my history of the sweat life. Very friendly atmosphere, aesthetically pleasant and CLEAN facility and good customer service. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy group fitness classes, they are fun, everyone can find something for their liking and what I like the most is that the management listens to the members' suggestions with regards to fitness classes; if the schedule doesn't suit you, there is a high possibility there will be a class at earlier or later time, as long as other people show interest in it too! My only suggestion for management is to make sure they stay on top of their paperwork, I've had to update my CC few times already, without any particular reason. read more

Renovated a few years ago, the YMCA is a full-service gym with a range of new exercise equipment, a gymnasium, and studio space for classes. The folks at the front desk are always friendly, everything seems to work, and there never seems to be a wait. There are cheaper places to work out around, but the community vibe here is much of the added appeal. read more

I heard this gym was recently redone, and after breaking up with the festering sore that is the Myrtle Avenue Lucille Roberts, I was up for a new gym membership. I received a tour from an extremely friendly employee (I want to say her name was Lisa, but not 100% sure). The building was an old courthouse that was completely redone, and I'm in walking distance, which rules. All the equipment is brand new, the upstairs studio has panorama windows and views, and it's very rarely crowded. It gets full of preening teenage boys by the free weights, but I suspect that's a summertime thing that will die down when school starts. My one complaint: more room to use the free weights. Otherwise, I'm definitely loving this gym. read more

Ive gone here a few times on the guest pass. Very clean gym, I've only used the equipment room. The place is rarely crowded. Front desk could be slightly friendlier, but once I'm into my workout, no one bothers me. Very, clean, neat and tidy place to get a good sweat on. read more

Equipment issues seem to have been addressed! I haven't noticed equipment coming apart anymore, and the stationary bikes haven't had "out of order" signs on them for several weeks, so far as I've seen when I've been there. The front desk staff have always been helpful and attentive - maybe they just needed to get into a rhythm with maintenance. read more

The new Ridgewood YMCA is finally open and it's beautiful! They completely gutted the old YMCA and took 2 years to do everything right. I was getting impatient but now I can say, as a charter member, it was totally worth the wait. Everything inside is impeccable: walls are painted bright/cheery colors, the equipment has never been used before, the locker rooms are clean and modern, the basketball court is lovely and full of natural light, the group fitness studio (although small) has an amazing sliding mirror-wall so that there are windows when light is wanted or can be dark for yoga or pilates. What this Y doesn't have is a pool- it's just too darned small. Also, no steam rooms. I hear they are working on getting a spin studio on the basement level, though. The Group Fitness classes are limited so far- I took the first Pilates class (with Tia) today and I was the only student. I imagine these classes will eventually fill up- it's so great to have them included in the membership ($43!) when the prices are obscene in Manhattan. I love everything about this YMCA and it makes Ridgewood, in my opinion, a lot more livable. read more

I've been a member here for a few years only because it's the only pool in the area that offers a swim only package. For the most part the locker rooms are disgusting. The pools are pretty dirty and usually have too many chemicals but the biggest issue is the lifeguard and the attitudes. They walk around with an air of superiority and always talking down to the members in the lane. It's really a problem and getting worse. I'm letting my membership end and finally making the decision to leave and pay the extra $$$ for lifetime fitness. read more

Joined this gym and love it. They have plenty of classes to keep my daughter busy while mommy works out. The equipment is always very clean and the gym doesn't have B.O like other gyms do. Parking is the only bitch, but if you can put up with that than I highly recommend. read more

I took a tour and the place looks great. Brand new everything .... weight machines, cardio machines, etc. I'm going to do a trial pass for a couple of days prior to joining. The monthly fee is $43, which is ok good compared to Manhattan, but there's a couple of other gyms in Fresh Pond Rd that are probably lower but do not seem to have such a nice environment. I'm currently enrolled in Crunch nyc locations for around $59 a month which includes towel service and more amenities, it was a great price I got early last year. However, I just had a baby and need to find a local gym in my neighborhood. YMCA seems a good option for the weekend and late at night M-F for me. read more

Love this place! New to the city and the neighborhood I ended up taking a walk with my kids through the neighborhood. I passed by the Y and was so delighted there was one so close to home. The building is beautiful and the staff are helpful and friendly. There are many programs for children and a caring, dedicated, and well trained staff to care for them. I feel very comfortable leaving my children with them while I work out and have them take one of the many classes they offer. The teen center is great for my older child, they play basketball and have activities for the teens to stay off the street and get to know one another. There are also many exercise classes. The Y is clean, safe, and a great way to meet new people and stay healthy. They are very involved in the community and I see the staff often strolling through ridgewood. It's really nice to have a place like this right down the street. read more

Don't sent your kids to this place. My 5 year old grand-daughter was bullied and beaten by 7 kids while the teachers sat around at the table. They covered it up by not writing up an incident report and none of them was held accountable for the beat down this child endured. Although the child spoke up and gave specific details no body believed her and didn't care. I'd be careful not to leave my dog around them. read more

Nice facility but TERRIBLE customer service. i've been paying via my credit card since joining. Due to my work schedule I can rarely go, but my card continues to be charged (which is fine. that was the agreement, i never have an issue giving money to local establishments such as the Y, so I maintained my status and paid each month). Although I rarely went to the gym, I kept receiving phone calls and letters from their reps saying that my card is no longer current (and of course it IS and ALWAYS WAS CURRENT. Mean while I'm on auto pay and have been getting billed regularly- in fact, i was charged 2xs this past month and spent an hour on the phone resolving this issue (so i thought) I would literally spend days on the phone to resolve this issue with folks who are EXTREMELY not equipped to provide any customer service; nor caret to help. then, the one time that go to gym and arrive their at 6am, they (the 6am women staffer) person behind the desk tells me that my account has been terminated. I try to explain to her that there seems to be a problem on your end; she's basically ignoring me and says to call the manager in the afternoon. For god sake it's 6am in the morning, there's no one in the gym or in the entire facility, and she can not take the time out to help me with this issue.i rattle off names of folks that i have spoken with, who by the way ensured me that the issue had been resolved, and she doesn't care. she does tell me what time they work during the day. she then proceeds to try and sell me a membership with no regard to resolve my issue. Finally, I find out from my credit card company that I'm still getting billed!! Are you kidding me?! I will make sure to spread the word to my colleagues and all neighborhood friends. read more

im gong to review the pre k program they provide in this place i cant say if is good or not because my daughter was there just for one day she refused to go back i found her crying the first day of school and this is a child that loves school and of course it was not there fault well i saw how upset she was and decided she was not going to go back and asked for my money back well it took them a week just to answer my petition and after i told the person in charge again and again my child didnt want to go back she told me well its going to take 2 or 3 weeks to get a refund mind you they only took 2 days to take the money out of my account, she told me she was going to charge $17 for the day she was there and she couldnt refund me the whole amount i paid for the summer program even thought i told her my child was scared to go back to the school its a really nice place there is a gym on the first floor but what i didnt realize was that the lockers for the members of the gym are right across the children's room im not saying it a bad school even thought my daughter refused to even look at the teacher when she was "explaining" to me why my child was crying but beware make sure your child feels comfortable with the staff before you make any payment because if you do you are going to have to wait a month to get your money back and its not cheap trust me i paid $297 just for 15 days plus membership and do not paid any summer school before you are sure your child likes it because they wont return the whole amount its all about money!!!!! read more
