As a young inexperienced unrefined woman, I often find it challenging to loosen up in a gym situation like this, as most of my prior experiences felt formidable, intimidating and frankly terrifying for me lol. I passed by this place walking by and was immediately drawn to the open airy aesthetic. It's not a gym that's closed in. Or in a dark sweaty basement. It's clean, open, inviting and unpretentious. As is the staff. These guys make you feel incredibly comfortable. Quick to answer questions, offer advice, and guide you thoughtfully. Brandon teaches most of the classes but occasionally one of the fighters will teach - all good and they follow in his style. The gym also offers multiple classes for different levels - Muay Thai, Sparring, Clinch, Boxing, BJJ w Gi, BJJ no-gi, wrestling, and yoga (on Sundays). Although I've only been to a few classes, I could immediately tell the members were amazing - they took their training seriously but not each other and were all very friendly and welcoming (ie no jerks). Not all gyms can say that. Additionally, everyone is still wearing masks which I appreciate given the global pandemic and all. The gym is well maintained and even includes a squat rack and bench press along with adjustable dumbbells. I don't partake in the BJJ classes but the Muay Thai classes are top notch and they even have light yoga/stretching on classes Saturdays which Maggie leads and I look forward to their classes expanding as the city fully reopens. If you're in the area and even have an inkling of checking out Muay Thai or want a killer workout, you should definitely check out Kings Combat Willamsburg, you won't regret it. Every class is different. No two are really the same. Even when I would attend two on the same day, what would be worked on would vary. I got to meet some really great people during my time there. You bond over your time on the mats together and there is a connection that is felt between all (at least that is my take on it). Even though it went unstated; it was there. Even between those whom I hadn't really interacted much with. . . The common thread of Sitan gym had woven us all together. Aziz has to have some of the best energy I've encountered. He is always quick to smile and slow to frown. He would bring his daughters in often (and his wife trains in the classes as well). This really made for a beautiful feeling of family that spread outwards. I learned so much when I was there. Got to train with those who had never thrown a punch before - all the way up to true fighters. All the while watching my own abilities increase exponentially. . . When I started there I was in the former group, with little martial arts experience before. By the time I was about to move from the area I had quite a few others ask me if I was thinking of fighting myself.

The coaches have a very pragmatic and open-minded approach to fighting and regularly incorporate useful principles from other disciplines. You don't normally go to Muay Thai expecting to practice the D'Amato shift or spar someone who throws lead side kicks from southpaw, but I have found myself doing exactly that more than once.
