It's evident how much everyone cares about both the yoga practice and the entire experience. Plus the recent renovations have made the space even better. It's light, bright, and offers a great view of the Upper East Side out the windows. Another pro of this studio is that it's open to practitioners of all levels. New York Yoga offers various types of yoga, including yin, slow flow, all levels vinyasa, power flow vinyasa, and advanced power flow vinyasa. There's really something for everyone. Also, the heat! It feels fantastic. This is exactly where you want to be in the cooler weather and it actually helps you acclimate to the warmer weather in the summer months. This hot yoga studio is conveniently located by the 86th subway station , right off the 4/5/6 and super close to the Q train on 86th as well. Overall, the teachers, staff, and students are exceptional here. New York Yoga is a very special place and I feel so lucky to be a part of it!

This review is for POC only…read more As I walk down memory lane of revisiting one of my favorite studios in NYC, I land at New York Yoga. Remembering the day Dana Miller aligned me forever with my Triangle Pose (Trikonasana) many years ago (I still practice her method today) and being excited to see an NYC all-time favorite, Victor Cotto, on the schedule, I decided to revisit my past for a quick refresh. However, my visit was initially denied due to perceived racism and bias. Can a Black girl/yoga teacher no longer do yoga at New York Yoga? I buzzed twice with no response as I watched previous European Americans easily enter with ease. Shocked, confused, and feeling deliberately rejected, I had to call to make sure there was a class, during which I felt like I had to ask permission to enter though a reservation had already been made. It was obvious. It is a rarity to experience blatant racism in your face in New York City, but a yoga studio? This is maybe my first. Anger then tears prior to class. But, in short, the class was graceful. This studio is wonderful for any white members in the community. For any Black yogis, please call the studio upon arrival so they can see you in the camera and mention or ask to take a class. If not, Victor is one of the best teachers in the city. Please head down to SUI Yoga in Soho to experience the charm of his flow. Moreover, the experience was so slight, maybe minor, but heavily felt. I will continue my tour of the best yoga studios in NYC again, both new and old, and report to my POC community as the new age New York Yoga customer experience has dampened my original glow, now and forever.

DO NOT TAKE KATIE BOYSEN'S SOUND BATH!!! I'm a regular here and decided to try out her sound bath -…read morewas really disappointed by the sound bath with her. Aside from it being one of the worst 45 minute periods of my life, her social media presence is horrendous. Peeked on her social media and the "advice" she freely gives out is not safe or professional. On top of that, she uses sacred Sanskrit texts to get likes and shares on her Instagram posts, without citing or clarifying the meaning/context behind the sacred text. Nevertheless, I tried out her sound bath as I was having a stressful week and all I can say is that I am quite shocked that she has several more of these next month and the month after? It was supposed to be soothing and relaxing, but was the complete opposite of that! I've gone for many, many sound baths and Katie does not seem to be a professional. I ended up feeling more anxious and uncomfortable than ever and I felt like she was talking to herself than to a group of people. She presented as very anxious and if anything, I feel like she was the one person in the whole room that needed healing most (sorry if that sounded rude). My point is, Katie does not seem to be a professional reiki master or sound healer at all. Would never recommend her class or taking any advice from her.

She knows how to push you without causing joint pain which is almost impossible to find in HIIT style workouts. Since the class size is smaller you get the 1:1 benefits of a personal trainer without losing the contagious energy of a group class. If you're an introvert like me, this is the best of both worlds. I've also been to a few yoga classes on the other side of the studio and they are excellent as well for low impact, stretch days.

I went on Wednesday night for a Pilates mat class. One thing to note is that all the Pilates classes are mat, they do not have machines at this studio. Wednesday night was one of the coldest nights in NYC so i think a lot of people ended up canceling the class, because it was only me and one other student. Trust me, if it wasn't for class passes strict cancellation policy i would have canceled too, bc I did not want to leave my home in that cold. But glad I went bc it was a good class, and all in all it is only a few blocks from my apartment. The instructor was nice, hands on. It was very relaxed since there were only two of us. She helped with form and also gave modifications if certain moves were too challenging which I appreciated. While it was only 2 of us in the class, I don't think many more could have fit since it was such a small studio. MAYBE 5 people max, but they would be very close together. One thing I did not like was that you had to pay to rent a yoga mat, which you need for the Pilates mat class. You can bring your own mat, or rent theirs for $3 either cash or venmo. I don't get why they do this, they have more than 5 mats, which is the max a class can hold, and all other studios provide you with mats. But whatever!! Overall good class in a cute neighborhood studio!

Luckily a few people dropped out of class and I got right in. I was asked if I needed a mat or anything before heading to class. Mats are available for rent. There was a cute puppy at the front desk too! The studio space is small and can feel cramped between all the folks at lockers, going in and out of classes in two studios, and the very limited seating in the center. It might be helpful to have a little more of a gap between classes to cut down on the crowds during class change. There are 2-3 single restrooms, a small vanity area with hairdryer, Q-tips, and a few changing rooms. I don't believe they have showers. They have locks you may borrow during your class. The class was good, but again felt cramped, even more so because it was a hot yoga class. The heat and in a crowded room can be a lot. Perhaps it was just a popular class time. Not sure if they ever sanitize the yoga blocks. There are wipes, but it's up to the folks using them to wipe. There was no announcement made by the instructor to do so. I'd suggest wiping blocks before you start a class just in case. Bring your own towel. Bring a water bottle as you may refill there. Didn't see any power outlets to charge phones.

The has a great environment, the teachers are so nice, encouraging, and you feel comfortable being there, no weird clique-y pretentious vibes here. Each class starts with the same question to every student, "Do you have any injuries or anything we should be aware of before we begin?" As a nurse, I think that is extremely important to ask, because every body is different and you have to listen to your students before you begin the class to prevent adverse injuries. To me, the attention to detail at Moving Strength is just above and beyond. The owner, Patricia Ruiz, expects the most out of her teachers and they are consistently hands on, knowledgable, kind and really promote getting the most out of your time at Moving Strength. I most recently attended class at their newest studio on 3rd Avenue! The studio is beautiful, well lit, clean, and allows for numerous different classes. I've been seeing some bustle about this new class called "Pilates Power Plate," and decided to give it a try! The class is 30 minutes in length, and when you first step on this vibrating plate, it's pretty intense and I immediately thought, "What the heck did I get myself into?" Haha. So you do timed pilates exercises for 30-60 seconds, so lots of classic pilates core engagement, but then you add in the vibrating power plate, and your workout is taken to a whole new level. It's so challenging and different, unlike anything I've tried before, but I love it!! There are a variety of different moves that incorporate different pilates equipment that get your heart rate up and your muscles working. The hardest move was the mountain climbers, your hands are on the vibrating plate and your legs are running, so it adds a serious cardio boost to the routine and an extremely intense upper body challenge thanks to the plate. I left feeling like I got an awesome workout since my muscles were engaged the whole time due to the plate, and I can't wait to come back for more! If you're thinking about attending a class at Moving Strength or trying the Pilates Power Plate, definitely give it a try! Your abs will thank you! ;)
