Strong is a great gym with great teachers. I have been taking the adult kickboxing classes for over a year and I love it! The gym provides a safe, friendly atmosphere and it is amazing what a great workout you get in one hour! Students range from 16 to 60, men and women. I had worked out in other ways over the years but had never done kickboxing before. It is definitely challenging at first but in 2-3 weeks, you get in the groove for both the conditioning and the kick-boxing parts. And it's way more fun than programs like Orange Theory or just lifting weights. I highly recommend Strong Martial Arts. It really is a great workout option for all skill levels. read more

This use to be the same as ILKB, but the are now separate. I take classes at ILKB and they have been great. I have taken 3 classes so far and all of them have kicked my tail. I have had 3 different instructors and all have been great. They all have their own style that they bring and in the end I am sweaty and feel as though I have done a great workout. I do recommend getting hand wraps. My wrist was sore one day after class so I went that day and ordered a pair. (I was advise to get 180 length, but that was after I bought them. But my hnads are small so the length I have is good for me). They help a lot. If you haven't tried Kickboxing I highly recommend it, especially if you want to let out some frustrations, and punch something, so instead of punching a person or a wall with possibility of injuring yourself or so wine else take it to the mat and take it out on the bag!! read more

I trained here diligently for years and eventually earned my first degree black belt. Unfortunately, I had to go on hiatus for about 4 years because of college, among other things. Years later I'm back to where I started: Moon S. Lee. Why? Aside from being right in my neighborhood, I felt like I was getting a quality education from real instructors taught by a lineage of Taekwondo family tradition. Not only were the classes about learning techniques, forms, sparring, and self-defense, but about self-discipline, inner strength, and determination, among other things. I actually -changed-. Over the years I went from feeling shy and weak, to confident and strong. I prided myself in my callouses and bruises, and beamed when talking about the incredible workouts and drills I did. As an adult, the new Fight Fit MMA and Extreme Fitness Kickboxing classes offered tons more. The high intensity workouts from both leave me drenched in sweat and running high on endorphins. Master James definitely pushes people to discover just how strong they are, because from the years I've been going, he's known my limits better than I have. One of the best aspects I appreciate here is the fact you feel like you're joining a family of people rather than just a class of strangers you won't ever know. At the end of every class we shake hands, high five, and introduce ourselves to people we may not know. It's refreshing to get that kind of respect after an hour long butt-kicking workout. Besides, who could say no to school picnics and pot luck parties? They even have Buddy Day, where you can bring a friend to join you for classes. Sweet. Beginner? No problem. One of the instructors takes the time to familiarize you with how class runs, and any basic techniques you should know. Okay, so stuff you should know: - All classes are barefoot, no socks - There's cold water available on premises from a giant cooler. And tiny dixie cups. - There are separate male and female changing rooms downstairs (though the girls' room is a bit small) - The MMA class is usually a 45 minute crazy high intensity workout, and the latter part of the class focuses on MMA techniques, either ground work or standing. - The Fitness Kickboxing usually focuses on a set of muscle groups for the class, though still a total body workout. - You'll be working with medicine balls, resistance bands, heavy bags, standing bags, and maybe some pads. - Oh, bring your own gloves to MMA and Kickboxing. It used to feel like a chore to do any physical activity and after joining Strong for about a year now, I feel so sad to think my membership will be ending soon! (I unfortunately can't renew because I am moving) All of the instructors here are so kind, enthusiastic and helpful. I started off with a Groupon and immediately purchased the full package because of how much fun I had after one class, despite the class kicking my behind. Every class is different with conditioning, kickboxing, self defense moves, and partner drills. There is zero room to feel bored or unmotivated. Everyone works together during the classes and you can get personalized help if you have any questions or need assistance. I feel so motivated to continue my fitness journey from what started off as what I felt was going to be just ten groupon classes. I have no regrets and I seriously wish I could continue classes forever here. Our girls have been going to Strong Martial arts for over four years now (they did zoom classes during COVID lockdown). I wasn't sure if they would want to stick to it and keep doing it when they began, but they have. What has helped so much is the community that has been built. It is also a great way to have our kids engage with other kids their age and learn social skills, which has been more challenging due to the ongoing pandemic. The instructors are amazing. They are so patient, accommodating, and encouraging. They command attention, but do so out of respect, not intimidation. I have watched my youngest daughter go from not even being able to do a push-up to now doing sets of 10. They get a great workout, but more importantly, learn valuable life skills such as discipline, perseverance, self-defense (very important to us that as women, they will know how to defend themselves!) and respect for others, as well as for themselves. The Strong family has been one of the few constants in their lives during these past few years, and we are grateful for that, and for how the girls have improved as people. read more

I'll tell Moon S. Lee the same sorry lame-ass excuse a guy used on me when he dumped me. "I think you're wonderful, but I think you're looking for something more serious and long-term than I am." I went there because they have a great 3 kickboxing classes for $20 deal (plus they throw in free boxing gloves). I had tons of fun in the kickboxing class, which really worked my upper body and arms. I would love to go to more classes, but they want a long term commitment from me. A really long term one. I want to go kickboxing about once a week and the smallest package they have is 35 classes for three payments of $149. I HATE when they do this because 1) it makes it difficult to see how much each class would be and 2) SERIOUSLY, that's your smallest package because that means I would have to commit to you for about 10 months (I can't go some weeks because of travel obligations). There were other things that irritated me: a) website is poorly designed with the schedule of classes being buried under several links and not well-labeled, b) rates are not listed anywhere, c) upselling, and d) no drop in classes. You lose a lot of casual clients this way. If you're serious about becoming a kickboxing fiend, this is a good place to go. If you're looking for an interesting work out to add a little variety into your life, go elsewhere because Moon wants something more than something casual. read more

The curriculum isn't stagnant -- this school is thoughtful and progressive, always looking for ways to push the lessons and their students. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I joined via Groupon in April 2011 and signed up to their program after my first class. The workout is intense and never gets easy. Though, if you want results, easy will never produce them. The staff is amazing - they push you to your limits, and you quickly learn your accomplishments are their accomplishments. The staff constantly walks around during class, and offers assistance wherever needed, as will your neighboring kickboxer. Modified versions of their routines are always demonstrated so no man is left behind. The music is always great, and gets you motivated to push push push ahead. So I too signed up for this place using Groupon. It was very crowded. But Master Lee was very friendly, understood the situation and told me to come back when it will be less crowded. I was really surprised he took the time speak with everyone. There was a lot of interest (and a lot of attractive women). So I came back a week later and it was a great work out. Very intense, sweating buckets. I'm in pretty good shape, I run three times a week for about 6 to 7 miles and I do Yoga twice a week (am I showing off?). But man, this was nuts. I think it is a great balance for me to calm my nerves with Yoga but then get out the aggression with kickboxing. This is not your father's Taebo class. This is for kickboxing for real. Love it here, but 2 complaints-- first not ENOUGH classes!! If I had the time and they had the classes, I would be here all day, every day. The teachers are awesome at pumping you up, keeping you motivated and really working you hard. They do a good job of asking about any injuries or modifications you might have/need to get you through the session. I was brand new to kickboxing and nothing has made me feel so strong, empowered and really kicked my butt as this! And I did Insanity 3 rounds in a row!! second complaint is that it can get crowded in certain classes and when you do partner work, I wish teachers took the time to partner people up since they know where most of the students are at level wise and it would make the pairing more even. read more

The instructors are excellent! They teach, encourage and motivate all the students to do their best! Each class has a good instructor-to-student ratio which is valuable in learning the correct forms and movements. We found this school through Groupon and decided early on during our trial period to sign up because we were so impressed with the teaching methods of the instructors. I have always favored classes of some sort over machines at the gym (which I really, really hate), and lately I'd taken some fancy classes around the city that were all torture and while they were effective, they were no fun. I decided to try kickboxing because I'd enjoyed aerobic kickboxing in the past, and loved the idea of taking it to the next level and hitting a bag instead of the air. I found the groupon -- $50 for ten classes AND boxing gloves? That was hard to resist! So I went for it, and by my 4th class, I joined as a member. The team at the Astoria gym is a lot of fun--they're cool people, amazing athletes, inspiring teachers, and seem to genuinely enjoy being there. They're very encouraging. I love that they also have a Facebook group and send out occasional motivational emails with some great nutrition advice. Even though I'm still new, there is a family feel to this place, which is really nice. The first 15-20 minutes there's an intense workout that's tough. Since the instructors rotate, the workout varies., Then you finally get to hit the bag, which feels like a huge relief. That's hard work too, but it's a lot of fun and definitely a stress reliever for a working mom and student like me. And again, the combos vary with each class so it doesn't get repetitive and stale. I enjoy the partner work we do at the end, followed by a stretch and bow. The music they play is pretty good, but I'd like to hear more variety. If you're someone who likes fancy modern gyms, this isn't for you. There are no showers, just a small locker room. This doesn't bother me since I prefer to shower at home anyway, and I love this location because I can walk or run home after class (I live in Sunnyside). I've committed to 35 classes and look forward to seeing an improvement in my stamina, strength, and technique. At that time, hopefully I'll sign up for more classes. read more

After doing kickboxing for 10 sessions, I can definitely kick your ass, and I'd look good doing it too. My cousins, sister and I bought a very good Groupon deal. 10 sessions with gloves included for only 50 bucks! You will definitely have fun punching and kicking the crap out of bags, and punching your partner as well. Aside from all the punching and kicking, you also do standard strength and endurance training such as push ups, burpees, crunches, and etc. This kickboxing really upped my endurance and prepped me for my bike training rides. And everyone there is super nice. James, our instructor is always funny, friendly and helpful. Even the participants were all really nice. I felt really comfortable punching and kicking incorrectly. Despite all the fun I've had here, I do wish that the packages were a little cheaper. I forgot how much it cost for a specified number of classes, but I found it to be quite pricey. Also, it would help (as someone had mentioned) to post their prices on-line, or at least list the prices somewhere within the premises. James kept telling us the packages, but it would be more helpful for me to actually have a piece of paper that I can study to determine the best package for me. Also, I would've liked it if the instructors stressed form more. I found myself punching incorrectly throughout most of the classes. But overall, the kickboxing courses offered by Moon S. I do the ILKB classes here. However, I've seen the kids classes on the weekends and the martial arts classes downstairs and it certainly proves to be popular and a hit! Not being a gym person, it took me several tries to find a place that provided classes that 1. worked with my schedule, 2. was fun with fabulous instructors and 3. provided a FULL body workout. Ladies and gentlemen, I have found it! ILKB does it all!! I have one full month under my belt and can already see a difference. I've been going to kickboxing at Moon S. Lee since January, and it has changed my life. No exaggeration - changed. my. life. When I first started I was only interested in dropping that last, stubborn 10 lbs and toning up. Now, seven months later, I can see the all-around benefits of a supportive, fun, limit-pushing exercise program. Along with my body transforming, I experience way less stress and anxiety in my daily life, have more confidence than ever, and my diet has changed entirely for the better (because of the high-intensity work outs I think my body just naturally craves more nutrient-rich, whole foods). a few months later, I'm still always being pushed. I've now lost about 50 lbs, (8 inches) and I'm feeling great! There's never an "easy" class, they always motivate you to push harder. Also, they now also offer Jujitsu classes on Wednesdays! I teacher they have running the class is really good. He's very good in making sure you're doing things correctly w/o discouraging you. ***iLoveKickboxing has moved to a new location! 32-43 Steinway St I can't say enough good things about iLoveKickboxing. After buying a coupon on Yelp (and procrastinating for waaaay too long), I started coming to this location a few months ago and have been hooked since my first class. It's a great workout and believe me when I tell you I would know. I've tried everything from yoga to pole dancing to running to strength training and while I enjoy everything for different reasons and continue to do all types of workouts, kickboxing is by far one of my favorites and that's due to the amazing people at iLoveKickboxing. Each class starts with 15 minutes of cardio conditioning which will really get your heart rate up. After cardio, there's stretching (super important to get those hips to open up before kicking that bag), then combos on the bag, followed by partner drills. Class is ended with a cool down/stretch and one hour flies by just like that! I used to look at the clock during workouts being like "when is the torture over", but that's not the case with these classes. ILovekickboxing makes working out fun and that's the best part! The staff here is amazing. They really make you feel welcome and are super helpful in class, correcting technique and being supportive along the way. Special shout out the Gabby. She's fantastic! On the suggestion of a friend, I decided to look into taking a class or two. I signed up for a full year after my first session. Finally, after going to gyms, doing workout videos, running/jogging, and trying to exercise on my own, I found a place where I actually get results. I am writing this "review" primarily for clarification. There are THREE completely different programs run out of this facility (43-08 Broadway in Astoria): an after-school martial arts program for kids, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program on the lowel level, and a mainstream "cardio kickboxing" program on the main level. The cardo kickboxing program has its own page on Yelp listed under "iLoveKickboxing - Astoria." I believe that THIS page was supposed to be for the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program, but most of the reviews are actually for "ilovekickboxing." All three programs are fantastic, and I've reviewed the "ilovekickboxing" program on its own page. I just moved to the area and started looking around for a good kickboxing program. I've been taking kickboxing and boot camp classes for years and this is the worst kickboxing class I've ever been in. I signed up for the class through the "I Love kickboxing" program. Perhaps it was due to the huge number of people in the class who were there due to the groupon promotion. If this is the case, perhaps they shouldn't be doing it. There are a few things that I didn't like that are based on personal taste (I prefer my kickboxing to be more arobic. This class was too slow and there were certain exercises, sit-ups & push-ups that should have been taught with modifications for beginners & older people like me who have already hurt their knees, shoulders and backs due to sloppy teachers). The most offensive and outrageous thing about this class is the fact that kicks and punches were only done on one side of the body. I walked out before the class was over. I wish that there were more options in this neighborhood. I love the "Body Blast Series by Christine", a moderate combo of kickboxing & boot-camp for women and still have one other class to investigate. read more

I've been taking kickboxing classes at Moon S. Lee for a few months now and I LOVE it!! I'll never go back to my lame workouts at the gym. I consider myself to be in pretty good shape, usually workout 2-3 times a week but Master James kicked my butt so bad my first class (and continues to every class) that I was sore for days! It's a seriously intense workout. And let me tell you how great it feels to get your aggression out on those punching bags. It's a huge rush! And Master James is so nice and outgoing that he makes class really enjoyable and fun. Not to mention he plays the best music. I would really encourage everyone to at least take one class and see. Moon S Lee Martial Arts is the home of ILKB Astoria. My nephew, when he was young back then, actually took Taekwondo classes here when it was in its old location in Steinway, so you can say this is an establishment well-known by a lot of Astorians. I only take kickboxing classes here so I can't really say anything about the other martial arts classes, although I do see kids so happy all the time (and beaming parents) everytime I come into my kickboxing class. As for the ILKB class, all I can say is, it changed my lifestyle and my family, friends and boyfriend noticed the difference as I lost 10 lbs since I joined in February. It wasn't an immediate noticeable change but with consistency in attending classes, there comes a point where all the pounds suddenly comes out, 2-3 lbs/week until you maintain a certain weight level. I do not even go on a diet but I noticed that I crave less rice, pasta and sweets, and I began eating more fruits because I am less hungry even after a workout. I also began drinking more water especially during a workout - boy, do I sweat a lot for just an hour! The best part about this establishment is the instructors. They are kind, funny, but badasses when it comes to the kind of workouts they concoct. You never know what to expect from them, you just do it and you get rewarded with encouragements and praises that makes you want to be a badass like them. I've never enjoyed workouts as much as ILKB and I am glad Moon S Lee is part of my neighborhood. I just hope I don't have to relocate (these damn rents in Astoria are getting high!) read more

Last week when I was walking home from the gym, I saw a sign for Brazilian Jitsu classes that only cost $30 w/a unform. You only can take 3 classes to begin but that is dirt cheap. The best part is the instructor(eduardo santos) is from the Lotus Club in Brazil and my coaches from California are from The Lotus Club. I started classes today and oh boy did I got a great work out in. I was super tired from drinking all nite but I force myself to wake up and want to classes. The morning classes are small but I kind of like it because you get more attention. Maybe one of these days I go check it out at nite on my days off. So far, I enjoying going to class and it is the BEST exercise out there. read more

For the last few years I had a very hard time sticking to an exercise routine. I tried, running outside, Zumba, cardio kickboxing and the elliptical at the gym, and I tired of each one after just a couple of months...then, I found Moon S.
