If you're looking for Venezuelan style arepas, you must check out this food truck. I've visited a couple times when I've seen the truck at various events, the most recent being the gem show. Each time, the arepa has been fabulous! Venezuelan style tends to be a drier corn cake split open and stuffed full of juicy, flavorful meat. Last time I got the chicken arepa and it was super stuffed and so delicious. Next time I see it, I want to try the cachapas which seems to be similar to Cuban style arepas wish a softer corn masa, stuffed with cheese and grilled. As a person from the east coast who regularly had different cuisines from Central and South American countries, Ricuras is one of only a few options that I've found in Tucson. When in town for the Gem Show, I got the change to enjoy arepas and plantains from this delicious food truck. I was so excited! The shredded beef arepas were hot and absolutely delicious! The plantains were decent- it was clear they were feeding thousands of people vs fresh cooking every order, but overall, a very enjoyable lunch. So here's the summary: Food is delicious, drink was great, cost is a bit elevated, good customer service. Now for the details: I really enjoyed the Reina Pepiada Arepa. Essentially it's a chicken salad but a really insanely satisfying one that you've never tasted before stuffed inside a perfectly crsipy on the outside and doughy on the inside arepa. An absolute 10/10. The Pabellón was a bit of a disappointment after tasting the Reina Pepiada. The plantains were a little dry and the shredded beef and beans a little too salty and I really missed the crumbled cheese it's supposed to have in the traditional recipe. Still, I'd rate it a 7/10 because ignoring the excessive salt, the flavors were so great and again, that arepa was perfect. If you've ever had a cachapa before and ate it in a city where you can find and where they use real Venezuelan cheese, then I'd skip the cachapa. I'm guessing it's pretty difficult if not impossible to find the correct cheese so they use a pretty bland tasting sub (think regular mozzarella). I wasn't a fan but the actual corn cake was tasty and perfectly cooked. I did find the price of the cachapa to be excessive for what it is. 7/10 And finally, the papelón. This drink hits all the right spots on warm day. It's basically a fancy lemonade. How 3 ingredients taste so good is beyond me. Do not forget to order this. So worth it. 10/10 You can also get this avocado sauce called guasacaca. Venezuelans don't eat spicy foods but these folks were smart enough to recognize locals love spicy so they've made a very non-traditional but very good local friendly spicy version. Every time I've been there, the customer service has been stellar. Really hope this food truck is getting local support and stays around for a while. This food truck was parked outside of Dragoon this past weekend, we tried the beef arepas, the rice, and the plantains - everything was delicious and went down very smoothly with a beer! The yellow rice was full of flavor, the plantains were different than any I've had before, they were mushy, but very good! The arepa was packed full of beef and one was very filling! This food truck stopped by my neighborhood for a food truck rally and I could not be happier we stopped by. We tried the pork arepa; we had never had an arepa before and boy were we missing out on this delicious treat! I am sure the rest of their menu is delightful after trying this, but please try an arepa here if you haven't before! Man I love this place. Seems to be the only place in Tucson to get Venezuelan street food. It's a 20 minute drive for me to get there but that's probably for the best. I would order way too often if they were any closer. read more

Ricuras is my new favorite food truck! I've been there twice (after concerts downtown) and am looking forward to having them again. The arepas are delicious, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. They are filled with a variety of yummy things: I've tried the pork, shredded beef, and beans with cheese. The bean and cheese arepa is my favorite-it comes with a huge slice of white cheese that is very similar (identical?) to Mexican queso fresco. Each arepa is $6 and is a meal for itself. I can only eat one. The empanadas are also very yummy-the beef one in particular is delicious. I like how the arepas here are very simple-the arepas have a very simple flavor, as do the pork and beans that fill them. No over the top seasonings or salt. This might be a turn off for some, but I prefer it this way. They have a very homey quality to them that I like. There are yummy green salsas to add (with different levels of heat) and a mayo sauce as well. I'm kind of obsessed with these right now, especially since Mexican gorditas are practically non-existent in this town and this is a very good alternative. Looking forward to trying their traditional malta drink. They post up in front of Club Congress Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm on. Hours posted on their Facebook page. As a Venezuelan eager to have Venezuelan food in Tucson, I'm sad to say that I really disliked this place. We ordered 3 arepas: Domino (bean and cheese), Pabellón (beans, beef and plátanos) and Reina Pepiada (chicken salad with avocado). The arepas were greasy (the oil had a weird aftertaste) and unpleasant. They also were small and did not have very much filling. The fillings tasted straight out of a can, especially the black beans which had no flavor or seasoning added to them. For the price (and the 20 minute wait at a food truck) we expected far better quality. I will definitely stick to making my own arepas at home! read more

I saw these guys at a local distillery recently, and both the pork and beef arepas (like a fried Mexican torta) were delicious. The beef was better, though, because it came with beans and plantains, but the pork was beautifully cooked. The avocado-cilantro sauce is amazing and I couldn't resist dousing my sandwich heavily. When we finished, I asked the employees if they could make my next arepa with pork, beans and plantains, and they said, "por supuesto!" So, that's what I'll have next time. Why does this world not offer more opportunities to eat fried corn cakes stuffed with proteins? This was our first time eating Venezuelan food and we were impressed. We started with a cachapa, which is a sweet and crispy corn pancake stuffed with sweet corn and a beautiful fresh cheese. We gobbled that down quickly and then shared 3 arepas: pork, beef, and bean and cheese. Bean and cheese was my favorite. It came with a rather spicy avocado and cilantro crema. I'm not a big fan of cilantro but the flavor overall was appealing. The beans were plain, but the cheese seemed to be the same good, fresh white cheese, and the wrapping and sauce were tasty enough to carry the beans. The shredded beef was mixed with vegetables and was very hot and juicy. I didn't try the pork because I don't like pork. Obviously, to keep your food deliciously crispy, they have to fry everything to order, so it does take some time to make these meals. The service was very friendly and we were advised that, in the future, we could phone our order in if we didn't want to wait. read more

The woman at the counter specifically asked why I didn't like the last and and I let her know the meat was lukewarm and so was the shell. Well the same thing happened this time. The heavenly smell of roasted arepas drew us in at a recent event at Hamilton Distillery, and the arepas were stuffed to bursting. I coveted my partner's beef arepa because his came with roasted plaintains and black beans, and while I loved my pork incarnation it suffered from loneliness. The avocado/chile sauce spiced it up a bit, but it needed more oomph. Ricuras' trucksters are actually from Cuba so the delicious melding of these two cuisines is a bonus. We ate here again today, and it was even better than we remembered. We ordered the arepa pabellon again (mechada plus plantains), such a great combination of salty and sweet. We also had the empanadas, which were delicious. Great service too - there was a line, so one of the workers came and took orders outside the truck, and for those who ordered drinks, she brought them right out so people could enjoy them while they waited in line.
