TLDR - the staff are very nice and this place is very convenient when visiting the area, but I know I'll never come back. The food was tasteless and I don't appreciate when places try to get a double tip. Food options around the area are very limited, but I encourage tourists to take a chance and explore further. This place is a great convenience for people visiting Hawaii's Volcano National Parks and are starving after a long day of sightseeing. Unfortunately, I was very let down considering the great reviews it has online. This is a food truck, so as expected, the parking is extremely limited and there are only two picnic tables available if you choose to sit down and eat. The area is nice if you don't mind eating outdoors. When I went, there were only 2 people working in the truck. They were extremely nice and did warn us about waiting times. There was a long line of people so we had to wait about 25mins for our food. Honestly, this is not inherently a problem, but be ready to wait if it's busy. Now for the food and the reason I'm giving this place a low rating. I was allowed to mix the carnitas tacos and the chicken taco plate given that they're all the same price. The chicken had a nice spice to it, but every item on the dish was very bland. The rice felt dry, the refried beans felt like they were straight out of a can, and it could have all used some salt. But the big nono was that it appears they included a tip in their total before handing the machine over to you to add a tip and pay. Unless you tell me Hawaii's tax is close to 20% (which I know it's not), I find it very disrespectful when businesses do this to their customers. read more

We stumbled upon this place on our way back to hilo from Volcano national park. They are located about 10mins away from the visitor center of the national park. Look for the sign on the road (easy to miss). So glad we found this place. Its a small business owner, the truck is located in a private property. Be mindful of the residence area. They have burritos, quesadilla, tacos, nachos and plate lunches. We got to try the taco plate and nachos. The tacos are the best i have had in a while. So delicious and the meat melts in your mouth. I would go there often if i lived on the big island. The owners are friendly and good service. They have couple of benches to sit and enjoy the meal. Highly recommend to check them out. Wow! We were thrilled to discover a taco truck in Volcano while staying here for a week! It is absolutely fantastic and totally authentic. We ate here several times. I got the chicken tacos and my husband loved the Carne Asada. Service is super friendly and they have a bar for self-serve fresh lime wedges and several types of hot sauce. There are some nice tables where you can sit and eat if you want or you can take it to go. The perfect spot to stop after a day of hiking at volcano national Park! read more

After a super long day trying to get back to the resort, we see Rico's taco shop signs on the side of the road, and what are we to do? Pulled a u-turn and got here. My Mexican self was in aww when I saw the birria, carnitas and pollo sign. Truthfully, I didn't have high expectations , BUT this food exceeded every thought possible. When we went they had ran out of carne asada so we decided to try the pineapple chipotle chicken and they were very good! The chipotle had a little kick to it which was good! Don't skip out on this place! Food options are fairly limited around Volcano, but we lucked out on being here one of the nights Rico's is open. We got burritos and they were fresh and delicious. Ricco's is a pop up taco tent located in the yard of a house on Old Volcano Road near the Tuck Tuck Thai Truck. I noticed the sign last week on highway 11 letting drivers know there was Mexican Food nearby. I was driving to Volcano Village last evening when I saw the sign up again along the highway. I had to stop to see what it was all about. If you know Volcano, you know the food options there are very limited and there is no Mexican so I was very excited. I'm going to go easy on them this review since I'm happy they took the initiative to provide a needed food service in the area. So here is my review. First, you have to follow the signs which leads you to a home with some parking provided in the front of the property. It's limited but you can also park on the street. I parked and found them somewhat busy for around 5:45pm. There, under a portable tent was where it all was happening. they have a menu with Carnitas, Beef and Veggie taco's. There is more but I was focused on taco's and didn't really read the rest. Sorry. The young girl taking the order was super friendly. They were out of carnitas tacos. I was disappointed but I understood as it was close to the end of the day for them. They are open from 2pm to 6pm I was told. I believe she said they "pop up" Sunday, Monday and one other week day. I ordered the beef taco plate with rice and beans and 3 tacos. Also some beef consume as an add on. Total was $17 plus tip. a little steep but I was fine with that as I was just excited there was Mexican food in Volcano!!! Oh they also have limited seating at a few picnic tables next to the tent if you want to eat there. It took about 10-15 minutes to get my order. That was fine. So here is the breakdown on how I felt about the food. When I got home I opened the container. I saw my 3 taco's, rice and beans and a container of the beef consume for my tacos. The taco's themselves were good. I don't prefer my tortilla's fried. There was a LOT of grease but overall the taste was good. I'll have a better feeling overall once I try the carnita's. The beans were a bit dry but flavorful and the rice was good. I just felt for the price there could have been more rice and beans. Both are very cheap to make and it would make the meal feel like a better value. There was plenty of beef in the tacos and I was happy with that. The beef consume was good and flavorful and a nice addition to the tacos. Also, no salsa provided! What?! There should be some homemade salsa to sweeten the deal. There is room for improvement but overall I was happy with the meal. The Good: Mexican food option in Volcano!!! Decent taco's rice and beans. VERY friendly service. The Bad: Small portions of rice and beans for the price and no salsa The Chances I'll Be Back: Yes, support your local entrepreneurs. Can't wait to try the Carnita's tacos. read more

It was our last night in Hawaii, and we were beat. We just wanted to get some good food to go relax for the evening. I'll confess I was a little skeptical driving into the parking lot of what looked like a bed and breakfast and then ordering food from a couple in a tent, but it was really good! Apparently we hit it at just the right time too because by the time we left a line had formed. Popular place!!! I had the pollo burrito and my kids had quesadillas. We read bad reviews of other restaurants in the area and others were closed already. We took a chance and had no regrets! The family running the taco truck was so sweet and worked very well together. Our food was prepared quickly. We had 2 carnitas taco plates, 2 birria tacos plates, and a barbacoa plate with chips and salsa. We raved the whole time eating about how good it was and how we are sad it's only open 2 days a week. But if you get the chance on a day they are open, you HAVE to stop by! So good!!! Ricos tacos is always our favorite 'go-to' for my husband and I. The carnita tacos and birria tacos are my favorite! And you can't forget the burritos, which are a considerable size. Humble little taco stand. in the area they are the best price/food/service combined. Lots of eateries around but prices are astronomical at other spots!!! I considered deducting one star because the parking is so terrible and they are only open Sunday and Monday I think. But when considering their competition they are outstanding. so they got it back because the rest of the eateries are too over priced, have horrible service, have funky hours, food that can only be described as 'meh' and or crap parking. Fantastic Mexican food in sleepy little Volcano Village? Heck yeah! We went this afternoon and tried shrimp soft tacos, barbacoa hard tacos and a birria burrito. The barbacoa tacos were definitely a favorite followed by the shrimp tacos (which were served fairly spicy). The burrito had great flavor and was served grilled, but I felt it had a bit too many beans in it, which squelched some of the other delicious flavors and textures. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and I'm sure we'll be back! Definitely worth a stop if you're headed through Volcano on a Sunday or Monday afternoon. read more

The guys were working as fast as they could to keep a steady flow of food for the crowd. The aromas coming from the tent just made us hungrier, and the menu choices were perfect.
