Yes it's a Radio Shack! Yes it's still in business! Yes they stock all the weird odds and ends…read moreyou could only get at Radio Shack before they closed. Need a resistor? Need a relay? Need an uncommon power adapter or battery? I long for the days when there was a Radio Shack on every street corner, open until 9pm, staffed by a grouchy old guy who knew everything about electronics (perhaps the brother of the grouchy old guy at the hardware store who knew everything about fixing anything?). Well, it's not on every street corner, and not open until 9pm. And the old guy is long gone, the staff under 40 pudgy white guys who dont know what a resistor is. But it's THERE. And they still stock the same selection Radio Shack did before they closed (far smaller than they did in the 1980s, but still very useful). I deducted 1 star because a lot of the items I needed were out of stock, or they only had 1. I dont know if that's a common occurrence or a fluke of the day I went. Yes, you can pay significantly less and order the stuff online and get it in a week or two (2 days if you're lucky enough to find it on Prime). But if you need it the same day, as I did, give these guys a try.

In 2010, I needed an alarm for my new car so I went to AMS. I walked in and saw that Paul was still there. He remembered me and described the stereo he put in my car nineteen years earlier. My new car needed a stereo too. Before discussing any upgrades to my stereo, he had one of his installers find out what my factory stereo had for outputs. He then helped me pick out an alarm system and came up with a stereo that would use my factory head unit and CD player. We picked out a four channel JL Audio amp to power 6.5 inch JL Audio separates in the doors and two channels would get bridged to power a JL Audio subwoofer in the trunk. That system got me through thirteen years without a problem, but it was time to upgrade. An annoying noise on the passenger side was bothering me for two years, so I took the door panels off, but I couldn't find it. When I came in for the speakers and alarm installation, Paul's installer, Jeff put my doors back together when he installed the new speakers. I didn't tell Paul about the noise till I picked up my car. Paul offered to go for a ride with me to find out what it was. He noticed a loose piece of trim on the passenger side of the sunroof. In the parking lot, he took apart the sunroof trim and put it back together. The noise is gone and I am way happier to listen to my stereo without that distraction. Paul is now the president and owner of AMS. If you want to upgrade your stereo or start from scratch with a completely new alarm and stereo, go to AMS and they will help you. A few years down the road, they will remember you like Paul remembered me.

There were plenty of "Audio listening Rooms" in the late 1970's and 80's…read more You know, that darkened, specialized room designed so you could select your 'high end' stereo equipment free of distractions and with the help of your personal sales guy. The problem was that your initial excitement was dampened because it never sounded the same when assembled in your normal home environment. The 80's saw a reduction of these places as digital and phone apps and ear buds bloomed and boomed to to obliterate this older traditional way of listening, and specialized places disappeared. Most went high end portable tech. Many of us vinyl people went with the flow, packed away the LP's, stored the turntable, and became part of the more accessible but less personal and more detached portable music scene, foregoing that sacred home space that was the refuge room for listening. We became accustomed to the blue tooth portable sound, but knew, deep down, unlike the newer generations, that we had audible memories embedded by experience that had opened us to a world that many of this newer generation never knew existed, that could take us to a sounding stage and private place and listening space that was a world away, customized to our own auditory senses and creation. With the imposed solitude of the past two years, I wanted to rediscover that which I had lost in storage and forgotten in time. My $300 phono turntable of the late 70's had suffered in abandoned storage. My 1990 speakers were ok, but I also knew there might be better. Where to begin? I went to my computer and started reading. I discovered that the world of audio had gone internet, and that I could find a zillion places to buy and hundreds of opinions, a multitude of pricing, but NOWHERE to hear, to feel and judge with my ears what might be a good choice. I almost made an emotional purchase decision tied a familiar historic American named speaker brand, reputable in the past and renewed in production with a midwest address. They sell direct. Great reviews. Solid tradition. Friendly sales people by phone. Then I discovered, after asking questions, that they ARE in a small Indiana town, but everything in production and replacement is in CHINA. They are essentially the way station. Fine if that's (pardon the expression), "your cup of tea". Not mine. Not for the kind of expenditure and no ability to hear the product. I reside, let's say, in the boonies. By choice. Unfamiliar with current urban choices, another internet search of, " Madison, WI, Audio Stores", brought me to,"UNIVERSITY AUDIO"... Would this be another glitz, sales slick, suit and tie specialized sound proofed, adjustable lighting, myriad-ed postered, colorful brochures festooned enclave of super- duper rabbit hole-bottomless dollar pit maze, that would try to dissect me more than I wanted to dissect them, place?? No. I met Ben. As straight forward as the plastered walled rooms with a couple of chairs to listen to any number of audio choices so that you could find your ears matched to equipment and technology that your brain could hear, and to which your soul could relate. I really did rediscover 'The Sound of Music". (That a bit too trite, but truisms often are.) We got it all home now. It sounds true to what we heard and better, because it's in our listening head space, our room. My suggestion is: If you are going to take the journey, or rediscover the journey, take the road trip, not the internet trip; especially if you value experience over expeniture as your guide. University Audio may be justly, the education your ears need. TB a real fan. A real customer.

Overall: through, expedient service and patient…read more Why I went in: I have a 13-inch, 2012 MacBook Pro that is past the Apple Care service warranty. I inadvertently downloaded Malware onto my computer, which made it run extremely slow, constantly freeze up, and generate pop-ups on Safari and Google just by typing. Service I received: Sarah, the tech person who repaired computer, promised me I'd get it back in 2-3 day. I got it back in two days and was pleased. My computer runs smoothly: no pop-ups, fast loading, and no freezing. For $250 (before taxes), Sarah did the following: erased and wiping out everything on my computer, transferred everything onto an external hard drive (which they included in the package, since I couldn't find mine), and installed an anti-Malware software. As an academic, my computer is my life! So, I felt the cost was worth it, since I have no intention of replacing my 2012 MacBook anytime soon. When I got my computer home, I had to re-install Word and other software I use. Initially, I freaked out when I couldn't figure out how to find some key files things (namely my dissertation!). When I called the store, Josh (the other tech person), graciously told me I could come in, since Sarah was busy at the time, and he'd help me figure out my "new" computer. The owner came out and was really sweet as well. Within minutes, Josh reset some administrative details on my computer and helped me locate everything. Plus, he gave me a coffee mug to boost.

I've tried to get help for my Mac problems from Willy Tech Shop (in my neighborhood) a few times…read moreover the past few years, but have been rebuffed (and sometimes rudely) each time. They don't really sell much Apple equipment there, either... just some random cords and accessories... for everything else, they told me to order from the Apple Store online. Very strange. The last time I needed help, I saw on their website that they offered "on-site support," too... but when I went down to the store to enquire if they had anybody who might come to my place to do the work (after my voicemail was ignored), the man working there rudely rebuffed me ... even going so far as to make me feel bad that I didn't know what my problem was, beyond the fact that my new Time Machine wasn't saving back-ups. I eventually had to call AppleCare, which was able to solve my problem. I really don't understand how this place stays in business, since they don't seem very eager to accept work and they don't respond to voicemails. At least, not from me.

I came into this store in looks to upgrade my phone and had great customer service. They explained the different promotions that were going on and walked me through what my bill would look like if I upgraded. I ended up preordering a new phone while I was there and was told they'd call me when it was in store so we could schedule a time I could pick it up so I didn't have to wait. I received a call the day before the release day for my phone, and they had my most preferred time slot available. So far so good. I showed up to the appointment 20 minutes early and they helped me right away! Not only that, the worker (Jon was his name I believe) remembered me, my carrier, pretty much my name and almost which line on my phone plan was mine a few days later! I was impressed as I know they interact with plenty of customers on a daily basis. Everyone was super friendly which was refreshing, especially since they're really busy on iPhone release days. I would recommend coming here for your cell phone needs, as you don't feel like you're being swindled by a large carrier & they have good customer service! They are able to do everything you would do at your normal carrier store. They also put on my screen protector for me, which I would have been horrible at and would have surely screwed up!
