This review is for Dr. Kanchana Viswanathan, who works for the practice, as well as the conditions of the office. I was assigned Dr. Kanchana Viswanathan for suspected Hyperparathyroidism. When I brought in my test results, she barely read them. She sat facing the wall and rather far away from me for the majority of my visit, other than leaving the room to get water so that she could have me drink it and feet my throat. That is the only exam that she did in the office (she ordered more blood work.) I had to tell her what tests were actually on the report that I gave her because, as I stated earlier) she didn't really read the bloodwork results. As my boyfriend and I were in the examination room, he started jerking around. I was alarmed when, twice, he had a trail of ants crawling on his arm. We mentioned it to her and she didn't even react or acknowledge it. She literally stared at us for a second and them went back to typing on her old laptop. This is something that I would apologize for and immediately look around for the problem, offer to move him as they looked, etc. SOMETHING! That is an immediate problem that you find a solution for ASAP! The exam rooms have old, old carpets that look disgusting. The office probably hasn't been painted in over 10 years (I'm guessing longer!), they have (the above mentioned) ants crawling about and apparently don't care, and the entire office smells old, dusty She was dismissive and incredibly untrustworthy. Hmm... I'm trying to decide the best way to write this without being unhelpful. Positives: Visiting the office has always been great. Everyone is incredibly helpful and kind. I personally have been going there for 3 or years and haven't had issues with waiting more than 10-15 minutes when I've gone. My doctor is Viswanathan. I like her a lot because although she's firm, it's because she really cares and wants the best for her patients and isn't afraid to shake up treatment methods to do so. I feel the sentiment is the same for the other doctors there as well. Negatives: Phones. While it's a VERY busy office, it is almost impossible to reach someone or get a call back the same day of leaving a message, which can be super frustrating for anyone living with a chronic condition and pressing matter. I go to other offices that use a callback method, but the difference is that they get back to you within the hour of your call... not a day, days, or never. I wish they d change their practices, because while the office is great overall, important things have fallen through the cracks at times and u wasn't able to reach someone there. So they're great, but going to this office requires lots of planning and oversight on the patient's part. read more

Excellent Endocrinologist! Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, Associate Clinical Professor UCLA School of Medicine. WOOT my college! Thorough, informed, upfront, honest and a nice sense of humor. Every lab test ordered has helped in solving my problem with more scheduled as follow ups on Monday for a return visit on the 2nd of November. Staff is great and super personable and patient. His office isn't much on the inside, the waiting room looks like I'm waiting to be booked at Twin Towers (wreckage of my past) and it's in the hood. This is a review ONLY for their receptionist or whoever is in charge of answering/booking appts. I have not been able to make a simple appt. per my insurance referral to this specific endocrinologist office due to the FACT that they rarely answer calls. When and IF , which is a 2% chance you'll actually get someone on the other end she'll put you on hold ..never come back. You end up hanging up calling back again only to get a busy signal. I've been trying to make an appt. for about 1 month. I have read reviews that the Drs. In the office are pretty good at what they do. I'd like to recommend the greatest idea for this office which would be hiring a receptionist that actually cares to do their job in making sure the calls to the office are answered in a timely matter. That appointments actually get booked ! Pay attention to this aspect. It's very important. You're welcome in advance. UPDATE: I called again. Was put on hold. Now, I can understand a short staffed office, being on vacation etc BUT the message states that ALL CALLS WILL BE RETURNED WITHIN ONE BUSINESS DAY..... three messages left, four days gone by and not a single returned call. Ok, so after about 2 years and 2 other endocrinologists, I found myself back to Dr. Berkson. My PCP asked me to try and see Dr. Berkson again because apparently the endocrinology I was seeing at the time was not able to manage my symptoms. After only 5 months of seeing him, Dr Berkson was able to manage my thyroid disease. My thyroid numbers are still not perfect but it's getting more stable and we are on our way to decreasing my medicine dosage. The office is still the same old bungalow and the wait time is still very looong but I have learned to accept it. I thought to myself, the wait time is a lot better at the other endocrinologists that I have seen, but I was not getting better - i think that is worse that having to wait for your appointment, right? Staff has gotten better. They are nicer, more prompt and you can tell that they have the willingness to help. Don't let the conditions of the office affect you like it did to me. I was a patient of Dr. Clark in Dr. Berkson's office. He left the practice and switched me over to Dr. Mohtasebi. I will not be seeing Dr. Mohtasebi again. The telehealth appointment with her was so bad that I told her she would not be my doctor moving forward. That didn't go well, either, so I had to actually tell her, "I'm getting off the phone with you now." And then I ended the video call. I'm a person, not just a collection of lab results. I've been dealing with thyroid issues and endocrinologists for over 20 years. I stayed on the Telehealth call with this doctor too long. I should have ended the Telehealth call before I lost my temper, but I didn't. I gave her a piece of my well-informed mind because my quality of life *right now* matters; and I deserve to have a doctor who believes that my life is worth living well and who will find creative solutions to make that happen. Laketly i've noticed the change in staff at the office has created a much nicer atmosphere. The staff is always smiling and make me feel at home. I sometimes don't feel well when I walk in, but I always leave with a smile on my face. I have seen Dr. Berkson and/or his associates and all are top notch doctors. Even if the area isn't the best and despite the longer wait time in the lobby, it is worth that amount of time I get with the physician and the great advice. Don't let the office decor put you off, this is the best medicine you can find. read more

The doctors here are the best. This is my third time having gestational diabetes and care here was too notch. The doctors always followed up on me even after I delivered my baby. Dr. Berkson has been ndocrinologist of the year in whole West USA for many years in a row! The "Endocrinology Team" actually consist of Dr. Berkson and Dr. Mac, Dr. Mac is very young but also a great endocrinologist and if he has a question there is always Dr. Berskson to consult. Dr Berkson was the Director of the American College of Endocrinology for many years and he is also Associate Clinical Professor UCLA School of Medicine. Doctor Berkson and Doctor Mac are both thorough, informed, upfront, honest and a nice sense of humor. Staff is great and super personable and patient. Every lab test ordered has helped in solving my problem with more scheduled as follow ups. Only but is their office isn't much on the inside, its a dump and it's in the hood. After moving from the bay area I've been in desperate need to continue with a new endocrine team and I finally have that now. I've seen the same endocrinologist for more than 15 years in the San Jose Bay Area. With Hashimoto's disease and type one diabetes with some complications throughout my life it's been very difficult to find a specialist that just gets it that knows their job and who is damn good at it I feel super blessed to finally find that in Dr Yasaman Mohtasebi! I look forward to getting my levels back on track and because I know she knows her stuff I know this will happen, she was very clear and forthcoming about my medications and her plan for my well-being I felt very cared for I felt heard and I haven't even been able to fill that with my primary care so I'm super super grateful again for that not to mention the staff there were so helpful they help me complete my paperwork as I am also visually impaired . They were very informative kind and courteous. Dr Berkson is a great Doctor. That is when you get to see him. The nurses there ruined his business . They schedule for an appointment at say 10am, you arrive at 9:40, don't expect to see him until 12:00 if your lucky. I've been going to see the Dr for over ten years. The appointment system has not changed, only gotten worse. To put the cherry on top, Dr. Berkson has another younger doctor working for him that I've seen more often now. She's very nice but lacks the knowledge Berkson has. I know thier intentions is to make my wait less, but I pay to see Dr. Berkson for a reason. I recently just left and went somewhere else. What a shame that such an amazing Doctor has terrible staff that are incompetent and rude. To make matters worse, they denied my prescription refill due to not seeing the doctor. I attempted to make an appointment so I could get my meds refilled and was told on a Friday that I have to wait until Tuesday just to make an appointment. My life relies on my medication and I've taken the same dose for 8 years and been a client for 10. How can they sleep at night denying someone medication they need to live. I walked into an Urgent care, told the doctor my condition and without hesitation he wrote me a prescription for my meds... Do yourself a favor, go to another Doctor. read more

The doctors here may be the BEST but the office staff SUCKS!!! The office itself is dirty, dingy .... looks like something you'd see in the movies about a third world country medical facility.... YIKES !! The personnel is rude putting u on hold for 4-12 minutes at a time only to give excuses as to why they can't make an appt.... I understand a direct referral is what it says...however, bcuz my PCP did not circle a Doctors' name in the group they couldn't make appt...,WHAT?? These so called office people (morons) need to have manners and serve patients NOT take it upon themselves to be rude and obnoxious. I arrived early knowing i'd have to fill out paperwork since this was my first visit, after 30 minutes finally someone acknowledged my presence and gave me the paperwork to be filled out. I waited, waited and waited to be called into the dr. office... in the meantime, a gentleman came in after me and signed in and guess what...... he was called before me to see the dr...... i let it go because i thought there may have been two drs. seeing patients...... NO!! not true there was only one dr. for all patients waiting...... finally after about 45 minutes i was called into a dark, dingy, ugly waiting room.... i thought i'd see cucarachas crawling out any minute.... ugh !! I sat there, a bit apprehensive, finally the dr. shows up and i express my anger at her seeing someone before me who had walked in after me ..... she admitted that this patient had called and scheduled that morning..... but why before me?? anyway, I was still angry but wanted to move on..... dr. reviewed my ultrasound results and requested a follow up procedure to be done..... nurses (the incompetent MORONS) were to request authorization from my insurance and once received i'd be able to set up and appt for the procedure requested. A week later I received an 'authorization' from my insurance...... BUT..... it was for an ultrasound, which I had done prior to my visit w/DR. V......... I called the office and had to leave a message because no one answered the phone between 9-12 on the day I called to notify the incompetent personnel what they had requested but they never answered. I then filed a grievance with my insurance and filed a COMPLAINT with the medical board. As of today 10/23 I have had no response from the Dr. office to remedy this situation. There is NO quality control, there is NO accountability for the personnel in this office.... Mickey and Minnie Mouse would probably do a better job. CHECK THIS OUT, DR. So this review is just for Dr. Berkson and the staff, not for any other doctor. I have visited Berkson a few times in the last 3 years and usually I see Mohtasebi (SP). I remember my first experience with Berkson left me feeling like he is a name dropping, look at my creds while you wait in my dirty lobby for hours, self-important old man. When I had to go back for hyperthyroidism/Graves I was happy that I wasn't seeing him. My wait was much shorter and the other doctor was much more considerate and explained the issues less confusingly. I liked her until she went out on maternity leave and I had to have an appointment with Berkson... Without telling me first. I would have rescheduled. So basically he threw out our plan and told me that I can either take a lower dose medication and wait or go see someone else. He cant help me and is not going to go forward with my health plan choice. I have been waiting since March of 2016 and it is now October 2016. My eyes are protruding, I haven't gone out since maybe... May because people look at me strangely and I just want to be healthy again. Im glad that he took the time to explain the risks of my choice but his approach comes off as... I know better than you. In our session his minion said that she agreed with his decision but when we got in the lobby she told me otherwise. She didnt agree with me either but at least she wasnt going to give up on me because I didnt agree with her. Before he left he told me I need to schedule an appointment for a month out, with no labs.... WTF for???? So you can get my money? Naw homie. Ill go back if I can see another doctor. The wait time here is ridiculous. Well over an hour, sometimes two. Last time one of the staff neglected to tell the doctor I was there and she came up to see if I showed up yet. I got the referral today to call this office for an appointment. The first person I spoke to immediately told me, "You can't have straight Medi-cal" before even asking for my name.... I have a weitten referral deom my doctor btw... so I asked to put an Supervisor on the line and Sandy picked up. Sandy was sweet but asked me the same questions more than once. I was on hold for a while so i hung up. When I called back Amber answered. Amber was extremely rude to me and I'm the one with a disease. This review is for Dr. Mohtasebi and office staff. They will not answer phone ever!!! I've been diabetic for 15 years and was recently sent here because previous doctor was a pediatrician and I wanted a doctor who sees adults. Mohtasebi won't even listen to what I have to say for my diabetes. I'm on an insulin pump which gives all facts about how much insulin I need so when I ask for three months supply she refuses to give any. Pretty sure if I don't get insulin I die. Office staff lost my paperwork for pump supplies. When I did manage to get a hold of office staff after being on hold for an hour they never returned the call. Huge waste of time. As Dr. Berkson reminded me last week, I've been seeing him for a decade. I'm a type 2 diabetic with, it seems, other problems. He quickly refers me to other docs in Long Beach. I'm probably one of the few type 2's (for close to 20 years) who has not been put on any meds for the condition, controlling the beast with diet and exercise all because of his forbearance in the deploying of meds. Wonderful doctor. He takes his time with each patient so you don't feel like you are rushed through your appointment. Unfortunately, this also means long wait times in the waiting room. I also like how he is not all gung ho on surgery and all kinds of meds. He has a wait and see approach and lets your body heal itself. My last doctor was trying to force me to go through radioactive iodine, but Dr. Berkson let me wait it out on minimum meds. I go to this office and visit Dr. Viswanathan for my appointments. The dr. is fine, and she offers Saturday appointments, however the front desk is terrible. I have gone through MULTIPLE instances where it has been the worst experience to get insulin. Just one of the basic necessities a type 1 diabetic needs. I never can get through the phone line, the receptionists do not help. I am on hold for now 40 minutes. She didn't call me back to reschedule an appointment like promised, they denied my prescription refill due to this, every time I call I am put on hold or the phone doesn't go through, and she just promised me that she will not guarantee someone to pick up the phone. (LOL WHAT A JOKE). I was out of state one time and needed a prescription. The on-call doctor didn't respond until a day later. I called in the middle of the night so I didn't expect something immediate, but a day later? Come on. I asked to call to the on-call doctor again to refill my prescription and she said "refills aren't an emergency." My experience with this office has been so negative I don't even know where to start. Let me start here... after a fight with Thyroid cancer I was asked to start seeing an Endocrinologist. I was recommended to Dr. Berkson. 1. The offices are TRASHY. They are broken down and almost dirty looking. I looked past this at first as I considered it almost superficial to complain 2. After 2 visits with Berkson, I was transferred to another Dr. Vischwanathan in the same office. This upset me because NO ONE ever asked if I approved of being transferred to another doctor. They just did it. 3. I am always in the waiting room for AT LEAST 1 hour 15 minutes. Sometimes there are only a couple other people waiting. Once, the staff "forgot" to tell the doctor I had arrived and she was taking patients that arrived after me - I waited for TWO HOURS. 4. There have been SEVERAL occasions where I needed a refill on prescriptions and the office has totally failed to respond to the pharmacy. MULTIPLE times. Even after I have called the office and they said they were doing it while I was on the phone. 5. GOOD LUCK actually reaching someone at this office. The phone goes straight to voicemail OR if you're actually lucky enough to talk to someone, they will put you on hold for 30 minutes. 6. I called about 2 months ago, which took dedication and a lot of redialing to get a person, to leave a message for my doctor that the medicine she prescribed was making me ill and ask what I should do or if there was an alternate medicine we could use. SHE NEVER CALLED BACK. When I tried again...for several weeks, to reach her and finally got her on the phone, she kind of had an attitude. She said she got the message and what do I want her to do about it? FRUSTRATING. 7. I was recently scheduled for an appointment on a Friday. Unfortunately, I was able to make this appointment. Called TWO WEEKS ahead to ask for a rescheduled. I was offered a SATURDAY appointment. I asked the person on the other end of the phone if she realized the date she provided was SATURDAY and she said "Yes, We have Saturday appointments now". So, I scheduled and showed up to find the office was CLOSED. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. I called the following Monday and asked to speak to my doctor. The front office person told me "You missed your appointment on FRIDAY". Then she tried to argue with me that she would never give me a Saturday appointment. UGHHHHHHH. They can't even keep their own schedule on track! 8. I'm currently home recovering from surgery and had arranged for a refill of a very important med about 3 weeks before running out. My mail order company contacted Dr. Vischwanathan/Berkson for approval on the refill. The office never responded. When I got to the point of my recovery where I felt well enough to log on to see the status of the prescription, I found that it was still not approved. I started calling the Berkson office, repeatedly, until I got a live person. This person assured me that they had sent in the refill request. She said she sent it again while I was on the phone. My prescription service STILL hasn't received (a week later). I called the prescription service today. They were very helpful. We spend over an hour on the phone together trying to reach the Berkson/Vischwanathan office and finally the representative had to give up. I know this isn't the fault of my prescription service because I do not have this issue with ANY other doctor and I deal with several offices. I am fed up and have had enough of this horrible customer service. BEWARE OF THIS OFFICE. I could go on and on about the poor service but I hope that what little I've shared about my experience will help you. This is NOT a knee jerk reaction. I repeatedly tried to get test results for a thyroid lump from Dr. Berkson. I finally wrote a letter to Dr. Berkson in which I said that I was assuming the results showed no abnormalities since neither he, nor anyone with his staff, had ever contacted me. Three months after I wrote that letter, I received a phone call at home around 7 p.m. one night. The test results did indicate a need for a biopsy. The best doctor I have ever met in my entire life... Very passionate with his profession. His dedications inspired me to return the kindness he had provided to his patients like me... He opened my eyes to healthcare system. I probably won't be alive now caring for other people if not for this very dedicated doctor. Dr. Berkson is a great doctor! I went to see him for PCOS, despite being worried after reading some of the other reviews here. Yes, his office is not in the greatest part of town and is definitely nothing to look at, and yes, parking is a challenge and the wait time can be long. However, Dr. Berkson is worth the wait! When I initially met him, he spent almost an hour talking to me and getting to know my needs and the state of my health. He was kind, thorough and extremely professional. It was refreshing to have a doctor take the time to listen and actually care about my concerns and my health. If the quality of medical care is more important to you than the aesthetics of a building, then give Dr. Berkson a visit. You'll be glad you did. read more

Let me begin by saying Dr. Berkson is a great doctor. His office staff, however, is abysmal. Recently, I attempted to get a telephone number for a blood sugar monitor. I needed to contact the rep. I waited 10 minutes and finally got to ask the woman on the other end of the line for the information. I gave her my name, that I was a patient, and what I wanted. I had to repeat my information 3 different times to no avail. I finally just hung up in frustration. I've needed prescriptions refilled. The staff, however, did not return the pharmacy's phones calls forcing me to go to the office in person for a standard prescription refill. So a few weeks ago I called and I wish I would have gotten her name but the receptionist was beyond *UCKING RUDE!!! She asked me what my insurance was and I told her and she said that they don't take my insurance a I told her I was referred by my PCP & had she checked her fax machine she would have seen all of my info they faxed over.
