We are vegetarian so we ordered green curry, pad Thai, and stir fry, all with tofu and veges. The quantity was just right. This is not good Thai food. The pad see eiw was made with thin noodles and was completely tasteless. The satay pork with peanut sauce was pork in a gelatinous liquid with a few peanuts sprinkled on top. I used to live in Marquette, now live in NYC, and travel to Asia for work on a regular basis. This is, with absolutely no hesitation, my favorite restaurant anywhere. As in anywhere on earth. Aoy is a culinary genius, there's just no other way to put it. Ask for super spicy ('pet ma' in Thai, or 'like Adam eats it' to Aoy), you will never look at food the same again. In no way am I kidding when I say that Rice Paddy should be on every tourist to Marquette's itinerary. The wait can be long because everything is made fresh to order and this is basically a one woman operation. Take a few dishes to Presque Isle Park or the Black Rocks, and take two bites. You'll forget about the wait, and have the best memory of your trip to the UP. I have to say too, Aoy is just a good human being. She raises money for school kids in Thailand. Long time local patron. This is a "one of a kind" take out restaurant and EVERYTHING is prepped and made fresh in house everyday. Some of the negative reviews were not even accurate which leads me to believe they were from out of town and confused with another Thai restaurant in town. For example, Rice Paddy does not serve Thai iced tea. I will not say it is the best pure Thai style food and it's not trying to be. This is "street style" food and it is WONDERFUL. The coconut Thai soup is like Prozac, My fave entree is Almond Chicken. Yes you do wait for your food for at least 30-45min. It's because the food is fresh and they are always busy. That's a very good indicator it is a great little place. I travel a lot in and out of US and always enjoy different out of town restaurants and food styles. Some people just won't get what's so special about the Rice Paddy... maybe they should go to a homogeneous buffet or hit the frozen section at the grocery store for some take home PF Chang's. The Rice Paddy is the ultimate in Southeast Asian comfort food. One more very cool thing to note. Aoy travels to Thailand and helps the children back in her home country. Had lunch today with my step daughter in between her exams. We have never eaten here before but have heard great reviews. Not knowing what we were in for, we dove in head first, with assistance from the more than friendly owner and one employee. The food was beyond amazing and the service matched! In the small city of Marquette, options for cuisine are quite limited. There are quite a few restaurants here I will say. However, quality varies tremendously. Whenever a new restaurant plans to be opened, gossip fills the town and people are curious to see what kinds of food will be offered at the new joint. On the other hand, there are restaurants that have been opened for a while and people still love eating out there. I didn't have that experience with Rice Paddy. I have been to all the restaurants in the city of Marquette, and I am completely unsatisfied with the distasteful, burnt, and falsely-advertised food. I got the Shrimp Egg Roll with Cream Cheese Wontons and Beef Stir Fry. 1) Shrimp egg rolls tasted like coleslaw was stuffed in a wheat taco shell and burned all the way through... and there wasn't even shrimp!!! Seriously??? This is what I meant by falsely-advertised food. If it doesn't have what it's supposed to, don't put it on the menu claiming it is, when it actually isn't! 2) The cream cheese wontons were terrible. The outside was burnt into crisps and inedible, while the cream cheese tasted like spoiled sour milk. After trying one, I figured it may have just been bad. However, I tried 4 more and they all tasted so bad that I threw all 12 away. 3) The Beef Stir Fry tasted like raw stew. The vegetables were cold (mind you, I just bought them), the oils and sauces tasted like water, and the beef had absolutely NO flavoring whatsoever. I regret spending money at this place and will never come here again. First impressions count, especially in the food industry, and this place blew it for me. I can go to Taco Bell and will get much better quality food than this joint. If you want real Thai food, Teriyaki Bowl, or even Jasmine's will be your best bet! I do agree Aoy is a sweet lady, but her character can't make up for what I experienced. Would NOT recommend this place. read more

Aoy is a Marquette legend, Girlfriend. Her food can't be beat, as evidenced by the wait for lunch on a Friday. She is take-out only, and (again)be prepared to hang for a bit when you pick up. She will greet you (Boyfriend) while stir-frying or mixing something, and her news-anchor husband might tally your tab. Memorabilia from her journeys in Thailand adorn the walls and make for interesting perusal during the wait. She sells t-shirts ("Girlfriends and boyfriends of Aoy") and the proceeds go to her annual trip to bring supplies to schools in Thailand. She is an amazing woman-I am proud to be her 'girlfriend'. The 'unhealthy' almond chicken is my go-to, and the fried won-tons are exquisite. She is the first person to ever serve me sriratcha (waaaay before we all had it chilling in the fridge), which tells me that she knows her stuff. read more

Aoy is an amazing woman. She cooks the most delicious Thai food you will EVER have and has a wonderful personality. My husband and I were regulars at the Rice Paddy from 2001-2005 when we were attending NMU. We just went back yesterday (3 years later!) and Aoy remembered us. :D It was like visiting an old friend who happens to be a WONDERFUL cook. She is aware of how to cook for people with gluten issues (which made me SO happy. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eat there which would have made me SO sad). She also let us order our one favorite off menu item - Kaffir Lime Curry. My husband and I both agree that it was the most delicious meal we've had in a long time and her prices are INCREDIBLY reasonable for the amount of food you get. My husband and I now live in Los Angeles and eat Thai food every week, but nothing ever compares to Aoy. We've tried desperately to find something at least remotely close and it just cannot be done. Because its crap, unathentic americanized asian food girlfriend...THE RICE PADDY on the other hand, is real food made by one real women. She's one of the most wonderful people I've ever met (on a service -small talk basis). Always friendly, and hands down the best comfort asian food I've ever had comes from her and her little shop in Marquette. I went to school in MQT in 99-04 and have the honor to say I've enjoyed many meals of home made egg rolls, crab wontons, chicken cocunut soup, pad thai and many other amazing dishes. Any one visiting Marquette should understand that it is a local institution. Whether you eat here or not you know Oy( the proprietress) and love her. In recent years a number of Thai restaurants have opened up in the area, and are doing well. But the rice paddy is a Marquette original. The owner cooks the food herself with minimal help. In fact if she isn't there the place just isn't open. And the food is good. It's become kind of a comfort thing to me at this point. i particularly like the curry fried rice.
