The Nasi Lemak (nasi uduk in Indonesian) which I used to eat for breakfast every day in KL was a poor version of the original. The coconut rice was just plain rice and the rest of the items on the dish were incredibly insipid and uninspiring. The chicken curry was oily as hell and the chicken stank. It was just all really disgustingly awful and not Malaysian. I would never go back again and will instead enjoy my partners lovely fresh cooking made with love (which Malaysian Delight is definitely not!)

These guys are popular not only for their Malaysian offerings but they are also one of the few places that open till quite late in town alongside with Hou Mei. The menu is simple and has an offering of Malaysian dishes such as curry laksas, Assam laksas and Golden Chicken. For me the best dish is the Golden Sands Soft Shell Crab, the salted egg yolk grinded and fried onto the crab which simply creates an irresistible flavour you can't have enough of, a must try for the seafood lovers. I also recommend the Curry Laksa or the Assam Laksa, but beware these are not the faint hearted and do really contain a kick of spice and flavour! For drinks, do not hesitate to try the Malaysian coffee but most of the all the teh tarik is my favourite drink, a silky smooth tea that gives off the best texture a tea could bring. A regular backup and a safe card in my book!

So this is how I found The Blue Piano... because it was the only restaurant open. From the outside, it doesn't look like a restaurant, but more like a small office or hotel. The whole entrance and first look of it was quite intimidating because it looked like a place I could not afford. But surprisingly as I scanned the menu, the prices were reasonable. The waiter was helpful and attentive. The cuisine is Southeast Asian. I ordered the jackfruit and rambutan red curry and chicken ho fun. Both dishes were delicious and well seasoned. I have no complains during my experience and time here. Every factor from the list I consider important when eating in a restaurant (food, service, price, location, décor, and other random factors depending on how I feel on my day) was checked. This is the perfect restaurant to have dinner whenever you want to impress friends or that special someone, or you just want to feel posh even though you aren't. Highly recommended.

The venue itself is a little like being in someones house and the welcome you get in similar. So friendly! I asked for a Bloody Mary and despite it not being on the menu was made it no questions asked :) After a drink we decided to share one of the two sharing platters. It consisted of some sort of savory cake, top hats and chicken satays. Everything was honestly amazing....fresh and generally spot on. The star for me was the satay sauce...it was literally perfect. Just the right amount of spice! I am 100% going back for a full meal here asap so expect a full review. This is a great find and somewhere I will definitely be taking friends to.

My husband and I are regular customers of Acha Halal Chinese Cuisine in Small Heath. We are quite…read moreparticular in the flavours of Asian food we eat, and quite picky, especially since I'm from Malaysia, and my husband has spent years being fed good Malaysian/Asian food. So it is a very nice surprise for us when we tried Acha's food for the first time! Their staff are friendly, delivery drivers polite and always ring you up to say they're around the corner. We have tried only a handful of their dishes, but suffice to say they are all delicious! If you love spicy food, then Kung Po sauce is the best, especially with the King Prawn battered! Szechuan sauce is lovely too. Satay sauce is nothing like Satay sauce you'd get in Malaysia, but tastewise it's great. The spring onion and ginger sauce is excellent when you are not feeling well and just want something simple. Boiled rice and egg fried rice also delicious. Any orders over £10 comes with free prawn crackers, and any order over £20 also comes with vegetable spring rolls which are lovely! Their seafood chow mein is chock full of different kinds of seafood, the plain chow mein is also tasty, and all their dishes are a very good portion. The only gripe we have food-wise is with their duck meat. It's very fatty. But the meat itself is always tender and nicely cooked. And the price. We just wish it's slightly cheaper. But other than that, can't complain! Lookout for their special offers - always good value, and their chef's special - a must try! Give them a try, you'll be surprised! :)

I didn't think much of the latter (too dry) but the first is good. We also got the char kway teow on both occasions - this is the quintessential Malaysian street food and apparently the litmus test of any Malaysian restaurant. I'm not sure this is the best example owing to my lack of specialist knowledge but I really enjoyed it and would recommend. We also tried the national dish, Nasi Lemak. The prawns that came with this were very good (although Jimmy K who owns Nasi Lemak's are even better). Finally we got a chicken dish involving coconut, chilli, garlic, and chilli which obviously with those ingredients was pretty tasty. Each dish is around £8 or £9 which includes rice - great value. The wine selection I think comes down to three colours out of which white is better than rose owing to the latter being too sweet (for my taste anyway). Very reasonably priced again. It's a small restaurant with only the owner serving and many proud regulars making it somewhat gratingly obvious they're regulars, but the fact it has such a loyal following is indicative of consistency and it's another asset to the small but quality Hazel Grove dining scene. If you're coming on a Friday or Saturday booking is recommended because there was only 1 table for two spare the night we went on a Friday. Midweek should be fine. If you're having trouble spotting it, it's the hole in the wall next to the Fireplace shop!

I have found finding a genuine Singaporean/Malay restaurant extremely difficult in Birmingham until I found Blue Ginger. The first thing that strikes you about Blue Ginger, located just off the Kings Heath High Street, it's it size. O.K, it's not the biggest place and I would strongly recommend that you must book a table before visiting, but to me adds to the highly personal nature of your experience at the restaurant. Staff are so knowledgeable and friendly that you feel like you are best mates with them. On the subject of the staff, the day I visited, I surprised my friend as it was her birthday. I had spoken to the waitress working there that night on the phone previously, and we organised a special chocolate brownie with candles in, and we both serenaded my mate with "Happy Birthday" to her joy and embarrassment! The plate even had a heart and smiley face made of Roulade! For the starter, I would urge you to try the Sweet Potato Fries, These are not normal Fries friends, but wrapped in rice paper and deep fried with a tinge of Ginger. You get 4 pieces which we shared. They sound mad, but need to be tasted to believed. I must warn you, the portions are HUGE! You might struggle to finish the main on it's own even without steamed Jasmine rice. And I'm not ashamed to admit I had to take half my meal home and I never take my food home! I had the Chilli Tofu Stir fry which was quite fiery but the waitress said that the spice level can be adjusted. It was jam packed full of delicious vegetables and tofu. The Pineapple worked very well with the Chilli. My friend had the Mushroom and Aubergine curry, which she told me she has every time she has been to Blue Ginger. It's that good! I just managed to squeeze a vegan sticky rice pudding which was made with coconut cream, and unlike any desert I have had before. Although there is lots of veggie/vegan food on the menu already, on Monday nights, they have a fully Vegan menu which I am looking forward to trying soon. I wish I had my phone to take some pictures, but even more reason for you to go visit!
