Are you a group of students looking for a cheap meal at the end of a long day and night of…read moredrinking? Or perhaps you are more interested in quantity than quality when it comes to curry. If so, this is the place for you. With a cheap 'meal deal' that includes a starter, main, rice and side dish, this place pulls in the post-pub crowd, especially on a Friday and Saturday night. The presence of curry houses on this stretch of Mansfield Road has greatly diminished in the last few years. Places such as Chand, Himalaya, and Umar-E-Khyam are no more. Even the relatively new Guru closed down a while back. So, we're left with Noor Jahan, which to me is baffling, and only the low prices can explain this. I have given this place several chances, mainly due to the fact that I enjoy Mansfield Road as a drinking area, and finding myself wanting a curry but not wishing to start a trek to another part of town to get one. As i've said, it's cheap. It's redeeming features end there for me. The chicken in the main courses always seems tough, as if it has been cooked twice. The sauces have a slightly odd flavour, something I can't put my finger on. It also seems that most main courses are based on the same sauce, with only small variations to differentiate them. Mansfield Road desperately needs a reasonably priced late-night curry house serving quality food, as Noor Jahan does not fulfil the brief, at least as far as the quality food element is concerned. The only other curry house on this stretch that I know of is called Deva, which I have not visited, but which I have been told some iffy things about in the past. Still, next time i'm in that neck of the woods and can't be bothered to travel for my post-booze curry, I think i'd take my chances at Deva rather than give Noor Jahan another go. I give this place 2 stars...one for the cheapness and quantity of the food, and one for the fact that the service isn't usually too bad. Oh, and the tarka dhal is pretty good, but it doesn't say much about a restaurant when a lentil side dish is the tastiest thing they have to offer. To reiterate what I said at the start though, if you are on a tight budget and / or aren't really fussy about your curry and just need a lot of food to soak up the booze at the end of the night, this could be the place for you...you will not leave hungry, as long as you like the food enough to be able to eat it all.

Oh, Chutney. Such a mixed bag. Perhaps the least pretentious of the Maid Marian Way Indian…read morerestaurants (and I don't include the well-established Laguna in that set). The food is usually very tasty, I can't deny that. Well spiced, with a real quality feel to the dishes. The chicken here is some of the most tender i've had in a curry, and they usually tend to be happy to seat you fairly late on in the evening. The service is usually pretty good too. So what are the downsides? Well, on more than oe occassion i've been presented with poppadoms and pickles very quickly after being seated, without ordering them. Lovely...complimentary, I thought. Very generous, especially considering the wide range of dips and pickles they give you, far more than the usual chutney / mint yoghurt / chopped onions combination. However, when the bill came, there they were. I don't mind paying for food if i've ordered it, but we hadn't. They did take it off the bill though. Next, given the prices of the main courses, I would really like to see them include rice or naan within that price, and they don't. In fact, I resent paying a whopping £3.95 for a small portion of plain pilau rice. Don't go ordering one portion and thinking it will be enough for two, it won't. Finally, we have a discount card as we have been visiting for some time. 20% off the food bill. On more than one occasion, we have been presented with the bill with our discount applied....but either they aren't very good at maths, or they were trying to rip us off, hoping that we were too drunk to notice. The last time this happened, I started to show the waitress my calculations to show what the bill should come to, and was told "just tell me how much discount you want". I really can't fault the quality of the food, I just wish I didn't have to feel 'on my guard' everytime I eat here. My only slight gripe about the food is that the saucy curries can be quite rich sometimes, but they are always flavoursome and well spiced. I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars, as I think it deserves more than 3, but not sure if it deserves a full 4. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, because the food is usually of a good standard, and I wouldn't want to put people off trying the place by only giving it 3 stars. It is definitely worth a go, just check that bill when it comes, and don't go crazy and over order rice, as it will bump the bill up very quickly. My recommended dishes are the spiced combo as a starter, and the Agra Falls or Patna Pathia as a main.

Friends booked this in advance and were able to sort a table including a highchair for our little one. Often when we've turned up at restaurants there's much huffing and puffing about finding a highchair but that didn't happen here, no hassle whatsoever so it made a pleasant change. The staff were very helpful with everything we needed. Obviously having a baby with us meant we were a bit awkward with requests, (including having to clear up puked food with napkins!) but the staff happily helped. The food was delicious and there was so much of it, my stomach's not used to that quantity! I'd happily recommend it.

It seems to me that The Balti House has everything going for it...apart from the food. The location is fairly good, close to Hockley and only 5 minutes or so walk from the Market Square. So, what's wrong with the food? Well, it's not that there is anything terrible about any of it, but i've never eaten anything there and thought "Wow!" when i've tasted it. The curries have always seemed to me not too dissimilar from ones that I can cook at home...and call me old fashioned, but when I go out for a meal, I want to be paying to eat something that I couldn't make at home. I just can't quite put my finger on what it is that is missing from the food here. Fresh coriander perhaps? Maybe they are actually healthier and contain less ghee / oil and salt...I don't know. All I know is, something is missing. Still, given the other options for a late night curry near Nottingham city centre, you could do worse. Noor Jahan on Mansfield Road, or the disgusting Sapna on St James Street are both worse than here. If you are in the area at the end of a night and you don't fancy pizza / kebab / chips, I guess you could do worse than give The Balti House a try. After all, what I appreciate in a curry may be different to what you do, and you might rate this place more highly than I do.

The decor and table settings are plain compared with some Indian restaurants, but the quality of the food and service are spot on. The owner and staff are friendly and very willing to make recommendations. I've had the Lamb Madras, Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh so far and each has the requisite layers of flavour. I tend to judge an Indian chef's skill based on an ability to apply heat without destroying the underlying explosion of flavour in the blend of spices used as a basis for the sauce. The food prepared here does not disappoint. The garlic naan may not be quite as light and fluffy as in other places, but the garlic is baked in and not added as an afterthought. I'll be back!
