Chopped barbecue sandwich and beans

We got our orders to go & they will still hot when we got home--1 hour away! Tried the rib plate with ranch style beans and cole slaw; and the chopped barbecue sandwich with ranch style beans. Ribs were falling off the bones; good smoky flavor. The sandwich would've been better if the bun had been toasted; hard to pick up but excellent flavor. You need to try this place!

Juan & Allie's BBQ - Menu and hot sauce table

Juan & Allie's BBQ

I picked up some brisket, sausage and a couple of family size side dishes. The meats were AMAZING!…read more Hands down the best brisket I have had a in a very long time. Those cowboy beans were great! It easily fed the 4 of us for about $60.00. Thats 15 bucks a head....not bad considering a combo meal at a fast food joint can hit you for 12-15 bucks now. I live in Washington but I'm from Sunset....I must say...we do not get this caliber of brisket up here on Whidbey Island. I could eat this everyday!!. Thanks Juan. Incredible meal!

After an early morning flight to DFW, we were halfway through the two-hour drive to the north-Texas…read moretown of Wichita Falls when lunch sounded like a good idea. Initially, I said that I was in the mood for a lighter lunch, but when we read some of the many 5-star reviews for Juan and Allie's BBQ that said things like "I will always come here whenever I am within a six hour drive", I changed my mind. So we pulled off the highway and about a half-mile into the small town of Sunset. I realized we were at the spot when the faint smell of wood smoke trickled to my nose from the side of a weatherbeaten building with a "Backyard BBQ" banner tacked to the front. Walking inside, we were greeted by nods from a table of men in work boots and jeans, and then promptly welcomed by Allie herself. She indicated the day's menu on the board and helpfully answered our questions. The inside dining area was comfortable and homey, even if like the outside it had seen better days. Sagging ceiling tiles and duct tape repairs told the story of getting by and focusing on the important things. It is a real family-run operation, with Juan smoking the meats and Allie making the sides, along with waiting tables. On the day we visited at least, it was just the two of them working. Of course I had to order brisket since it was Texas, but the sides presented a more challenging decision. After hearing Allie's description of their cowboy beans, I chose those and the potato salad. She disappeared into the back room, and soon returned with a large metal tray containing slices of brisket and Texas-sized portions of sides. The brisket was beautifully smoked and sliced, and flavor was perfect. The only deduction I have to make was due to it being a little less tender than I would expect from a great brisket. It went down easily despite having said I was not in the mood for a pile of meat, but I did have to make use of my knife a little more than usual. The sides were big on home-cooked flavor. In both, I noticed a big difference from typical southern or big-name barbecue joints in that they were not overly sweet but relied on more earthy seasonings for their taste. They were excellent complements to the beef, and deserve some recognition of their own. After our meal was done, we chatted with Juan outside for a minute, where we learned some of the details mentioned above. It would have been cool to hear more about their story, but they had work to do and we had to get back on the road. So we pulled back onto the highway, having experienced a friendly welcome to Texas and a satisfying first meal in the Lone Star State.

There were about six of us in line, and it took almost a half hour before we could be waited on. Efficiency is not their strong suit. The food was good. Not the best BBQ I've had in Texas, but the best I've had in Henrietta. Admittedly, my test group is quite small here. Chopped brisket sandwich with potato salad. So many ways to go wrong, and they took none of them. So kudos for the eats. But that wait! I counted five people on duty, and four of them were in the back. Oh, and two minutes. Yeah, I had my stopwatch going when I saw one of them attempt to put on a pair of gloves. And that's two minutes for one glove. Quite a struggle there, but I'm happy to report he did get it on. I didn't time the second one. I didn't need my blood pressure rising further. I'm hoping those four in the back were cooking, and if they were, then snaps for making good food!

The chicken and turkey were so dry...I had to drown them in barbecue sauce...I'm hoping it marinates in it and we can use the left overs for sandwiches tomorrow. The brisket was okay. It wasn't the best thing I ever tasted. The cornbread was cold and mushy. The rosemary potatoes and mixed veggies were delicious though. I could've had more of those. I know I shouldn't have too high of expectations when it is part of a fuel station, but when you have "best" in your name, y'all need to show up!

We're kinda picky. The next time came and as we were driving up we pulled off and toured this little place. There was beef jerky everywhere...and sauces and jellies and homemade fried pies and a cafe full of people. We just got one packet of their original beef jerky which turned out to be a HUGE mistake. As we drove off we dug in to what turned out to be mouth watering goodness. Super tasty. Delicious. THE perfect snack. Next time we purchased 10 packets. Another mistake it didn't last long. I placed an order for 30 packets to ship to my home and it literally arrived in a couple of days. I plan on sharing "some" with friends. They threw in a package of cured smoked beef sticks and can't wait to try them. The folks there are the nicest people! Sweet and informative. Hats off to their shipping folks as well! Beyond the cleanliness, the atmosphere is warm and exceptionally welcoming. The staff is genuinely friendly, and the owners go out of their way to ensure every guest feels truly taken care of. It is rare to find a place that balances such professional upkeep with a personal, "home-away-from-home" feel. Highly recommended for anyone in the area looking for a quality experience. The food is great. The plates are small ( which is fine ) but it would have been nice to have a bit of room to cut up my food , and I'd add a second side to anything that's not a sandwich, but even with just one side ( steaks get two ) you don't leave hungry. ( extra sides are 4 a piece) The only other suggestion is a basket of homemade bread would be perfect for this establishment . It's a southern food , steaks and gravy type place.
