Look for the Hodag. The green one. Yeah, that one!

Shorty is back! Lots of history here, some of it my own. My family's homestead was established in Rhinelander in 1926 when my grandfather and grandmother moved their brood to Arbutus Street. My dad grew up just a couple of blocks from the old brewery on the Pelican River, which was shuttered in those days because of the Volstead Act. Happier days began in 1933 when the act was repealed and the brewery fired up again. In 1940, the brewery began bottling their tasty brew in 7-ounce bottles known as a short beer, or, "Shorty". Dad was never much of a beer drinker, but when he did partake, Rhinelander was his beer of choice. I have photos of Mom & Dad with their hands wrapped around Rhinelander Shorty bottles. I have a couple of those bottles, too. (Empty, of course. You'll find more Shorty bottles in Phillips in Fred Smith's Wisconsin Concrete Park!) Imagine our great disappointment to hear of the demise of Rhinelander Brewing in 1967. (I liked a Rhinelander beer now and then, although I was too young - but don't tell anybody, okay?) Rhinelander Beer was sold in 12-ounce bottles after that, but it was brewed by Joseph Huber in Monroe, and it wasn't really Rhinelander beer anymore. Fast forward to 2009, when Jyoti Auluck bought the brand and returned it to Rhinelander, where it belongs. Even better, she brought Shorty back to life, too! Shorty is actually still brewed in Monroe by Minhas Brewing, but the microbrewery in Rhinelander produces several brews that are available in this tap room. Along with the various microbrews, you'll find dioramas with artifacts documenting the history of the brewery and Shorty, too! Be sure to see what a 12 pack looked like 60 years ago. Besides beer, you'll also find a wide variety of branded souvenirs, hats, sweatshirts and t-shirts, some with pockets to hold your beer and some with built-in bottle openers! Take home a glass or two with the Rhinelander logo to put your beer in, and while you're at it, take home a growler with several glasses of beer in it. The Rhinelander Brewing Company is easy to find on Brown Street. Just look for the Hodag. The green one. Well, the green one with the Rhinelander Brewing logo painted all over it. Yeah, that green Hodag. You can't miss it.

    Cool menu!

This place is awesome! The customer service was great and the girl working was very informative about all of the new beers and also the ones that started it all. My husband and I are staying in Hazelhurst, WI for our one year wedding anniversary and decided to go to a few breweries and distilleries. This was our favorite of them all! If you are a fan of root beer then this is the place to come. They have a hard root beer that is amazing! It's so good we bought two cases to take back with us all the way to Oklahoma. If you are in the area check them out. The girl working also had a mask on and overall it was pretty quiet and clean!

Vanessa, our server, was great! Wonderful service, delicious beer, and good vibes. I recommend!

Good tasty selection of brews, hard sodas and seltzers. Bought a couple of cases for the road. Wish they served food.

Quaint brewery. Cheap growler fills. Lots of merchandise. Beers are common. Right down town.

The tour was well worth the cost and enjoyed our take home beers and glass.

There was a plethora of options including, but not limited to, vodka, onesies, plushies, magnets, and beer. If I'm being honest, I hadn't heard of the mythical creature until we came to Rhinelander and now I have a magnet on my fridge as a reminder of our time in this town. The person who helped us was an absolute delight and welcomed us to the area.

Through the front window of this repurposed service station, you can see an array of Hodag themed merchandise. Most of it is new, however, there are old, brown. Rhinelander Shorty bottles for sale, the same ones my mother and father used to drink Rhinelander beer from. Yellow diamond signs, reflective and manufactured to DOT standards warn of Hodag crossings. Other signs indicate Hodag parking only, others will be crushed. You'll find front license plates, license plate frames, mouse pads, thimbles, bells, bottle openers, salt and pepper shakers, refrigerator magnets, decals, geocaching emblems and, of course, sweatshirts and t-shirts in a wide range of sizes. The Hodag store shares the space with a resale shop filled with artifacts of several varieties. In addition, there are works of art for sale, of course, also themed around the Hodag. Because of the nature of art, the inventory is subject to change. During my visit, there was a cross-cut saw painted with a scene featuring the Hodag. What's a Hodag? It's a mythical beast that sprang from the fertile mind of another Rhinelander legend, Gene Shepard, a practical joker of renown. The fearsome creature was "captured" by Shepard in 1896. It was made by Shepard and an expert carver; Shepard exhibited the creature in carnival side-shows. It has since become the official symbol of Rhinelander, his image appearing on water towers, squad cars, and signage, he's even the mascot of the high school. A park is named for the Hodag and now there's even a huge music festival that uses his name. And now, thanks to the Hodag Store, you can own a piece of Rhinelander's ambassador and official mascot.

They have a variety of items, so you could easily find a gift for someone here if you're not looking for yourself. They had some cute wind chimes and there was one I liked a lot, but I just moved and am not familiar enough with my new home to know where it could go. They had some plants and planters--I certainly don't need another planter but there was a hedgehog on that was too cute to leave on the shelf. They have some t-shirts, including some Park Falls souvenir ones. There were some baby items, jewelry, and what they're probably best known for--their bath bar. They had a nice large sink and a variety of oils, soaps, and so on for folks to smell and try. I didn't buy any bath stuff but I always appreciate when a store selling lotions and potions has a sink for you to rinse off. Service was friendly and not pushy. Parking is super easy; I'm not sure if there's ever a busy time in Park Falls, but there was street parking directly in front of the store and throughout the downtown.
